We need to get Brupeg up to top speed and hold her there so that we can calibrate and test some of the onboard systems. Duncan was onboard for the week and managed to sort out the wiring chaos under the dash and tidy up some last minute BruNet projects so we have a full suite of digital gauges working up in the bridge and reading accurately. While Duncan was busy in the wheelhouse, Birk was in the engine room finishing the small genset exhaust.
It was a good test, we found some issues on the boat which we will need to address in the coming weeks, and we now know Brupeg's top speed!

"Boost the boost and save the juice, and you will get home to roost" - RAF motto for pilots in WW2. When I ran roadtrains in the 1990's with a 350 Cummins, we flogged them 100% load factor all day. Usually got 1 million kms before the main bearings would wear out. Now there is really good synthetic oil........its hard to know how much further they would go.

My old man started watching your channel about 5 years ago, he loved seeing your progress and it helped keep him entertained during the covid lockdowns in Melbourne. He normally used my RU-vid login so even though he died last year I still see your updates pop up. Dad never got to see Brupeg up and running but I’m sure he would’ve been thrilled for you both. Never thought I’d be crying over a boat but here we are lol. Thanks for sharing your journey, congrats and safe travels!

Wheelhouse electronics are best cooled with fan exits on top, pulling cold air from below. This takes advantage of natural heated-air buoyancy, & easier on fan(s) especially if they are controlled by thermostat. Radar & sounder boxes might have cooling fins --- if so they should be oriented with fins aligned in the vertical direction for easier cooling.

Suggestion: When you have all engine parameters sorted, you might consider a full power workup. Any temps not on the bridge panel place thermometers tape them down at these points. This trial should take 3 hours. Take readings every 10 mins. While you increase speed slowly to full power. Over an hour. at fullpower still taking readings every 10 mins for an hour. Reduce your power down to idle slowly for an hour let the engine cool down. Compile all this info including air temp date, sea state, tide outside air temp, time of year/day and fuel consumption. You have performance data for Brupeg as new.If you lift out say every 3 years complete another power trial before lift out you can see either high or low temps that will give you a bench mark to work from. Love the channel.

Nice strategy, thanks. There are certainly some longer and structured runs planned for more comprehensive testing and data collection. The main objective of this short test was to calibrate the numbers of the Brunet sensors/systems against reality and redarc, mostly the EGT, MAP and gearbox oil pressure since they are the new kids on the block. All of these are active sensors, so they turned out just fine as they had been set up against their datasheets. We had planned to do up a table of measurements for both the engine rooms instruments and the wheelhouse measurements, however the exhaust leak made the engine room a hostile environment, so with great care, we made a couple of measurements and I got out. Thats why there wasn't much video around the actual testing/measuring. We also do have data logging for all measured parameters, but really haven't used that in anger yet, but will do so soon.

IT guy here: if you're using off the shelf networking in an ocean environment, especially with CAT5/6/etc, those tiny pins can corrode. Not sure if available in Oz area, but get some CorrosionX Aviation ($30 in USA). Spray/pour into a small cup and use a brush to coat the connectors, then plug in. Also make sure your networking equip is properly grounded. Make sure long runs are tied off - thin copper will work harden, so avoid any stretch that can oscillate.

The full-power instrument calibration test sounded really interesting, a little exciting even, with the prospect of finding out Brupeg's top speed, economy cruise and fast cruise speeds, and how the engine room instrument readings compared to those in the wheel-house. I was a little disappointed that you didn't share any of the calibration procedure with us. Beyond a wide angle wheelhouse view of Damien operating the throttle, the instrument display wasn't legible, so we had little idea what was happening. At 29:06 Jess commented that Brupeg was doing 10.2 knots, but without telling us what the throttle setting was or what the revs were. It was interesting to learn, at least, that the max revs achieved were a little low, likely due to prop mismatch or a throttle cable issue. There was probably too much happening for you to keep us in the loop as much as I'd hoped, and I'm sure we'll learn more details in future episodes. Everything is looking really good so far, and the next sea trials will be epic. Nice work on your more relaxed docking procedure!

You can see Duncan is an experienced technician. Nice instrumentation set up. I would of gone to a MPU out of the flywheel housing for RPM rather than the alternator for a more accurate reading through the rpm. Cummins PT fuel systems primary source of power validation is fuel pressure with boost being secondary, however still important and still an indicator. You are correct with the engine not reaching rated speed. Very important to get this right. I am not sure whether you have a bitza engine or not. Do you know your Fuel pump code and CPL. This should be on your fuel pump tag. First 4 numbers reflects the CPL and the second 4 numbers reflects the pump code. A common NTA855-M CPL is 0700 and Code 9619 Specifications are Fuel pressure - 154 - 170psi Intake Manifold Pressure - 33”hg - 43”hg Max Exhaust Back Pressure: 40”H20 Max Fuel Restriction: -4”hg Max Fuel Return restriction: 4”hg The correct way to get the best data to make a call on your prop is accuratley measuring fuel and Intake manifold pressure with a calibrated gauge. confirm you are getting full throttle Use a hand held tacho on the crankshaft damper and do a full throttle run into the tide or wind and collect the pressures and the rpm The data has to be accurate. Unsure if you have validated your fuel and exhaust restrictions. You want to get your glycol to 50%. Best protection for your liners

Just a quick reminder that cats love the taste of engine coolant! Once ingested, antifreeze can be absorbed within about 40 to 60 minutes. Antifreeze and cats are a very toxic combination - even a very small ingestion can result in severe signs of antifreeze poisoning and potentially death. Only a teaspoon or two will poison a cat, while three tablespoons will poison a 15-pound dog. A dog only needs to ingest 2 to 3 milliliters of ethylene glycol per pound of body weight to get a lethal dose of the toxin; cats only need to ingest 0.64 milliliters for the same effect.

Dame, a suggestion if I may for Bru-net. I know you have an RPM readout there on the bridge, but what may help future diagnosis, and fouling or engine performance monitoring would be a throttle position feedback sensor. That will enable you to build a chart showing normal rpm and speed for a set % throttle, will give you an easy way to check if the throttle cable has broken (move throttle lever, no engine response, if position sensor indicating no change...) decreased rpm's in flat water for throttle position will also indicate lowered performance or wear within components etc.

When are you going to test the stabilisers? I don’t quite see how they will actually help stabilise the boat. Large cruise ships and the QM2 have stabilisers, but the stabilisers, when deployed, will rotate along their length like the ailerons of an aircraft. Thus if the ship rolls to the left, the lefthand stabs will rotate leading edge up, the right hand stabs will be leading edge down and will pull the ship toward upright. I may be wrong but yours appear to be fixed and will roll with the hull. But you’ve all done an amazing job with this entire endeavour.
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg Месяц назад
Hi Geoff, the wings will be one of the first things we test once the electrical upgrade is finished. They are passive stabilisers. They work in the same way as wings on a plane. they won’t counteract roll like active stabilisers but they are not designed to do that, there designed to dramatically slow the roll down. It’s very hard for the hull to lurch left and right when you have 6sq meters of surface area and water weight to lift compress each time it wants to roll.

Looks great guys, with the fan where you're putting it, heat rises, it would be a good idea to mount the fan to extract air from the top and put a fan over where the mesh is or inside somewhere pushing air across etc, it can be mounted inside even, or just the extract fan. Either way the fan mounted at the top pushing air in will be fighting against the natural flow of hot air is all. Just think of it like it is a big PC tower, with the same principle, air in air out, and heat rises. removing the heat is what you're trying to activate. Not cool the items down. By removing heat the items will be able to cool etc. 🤗 Ps: loved the violent parking, very stylish indeed.
@ThePaulv12
@ThePaulv12 2 месяца назад
If you look at the direction of rotation of a CPU fan you can see that they blow air across the heatsink not suck. If suck air all you'll ever get is barometric pressure, put if you push it you can have higher than barometric pressure, therefore more air = more cooling (all things being equal).
@DallasD2.0
@DallasD2.0 2 месяца назад
@@ThePaulv12 yep, that’s why you have a a fan pushing and pulling. Also the fan is not right up against all the items like a cpu set up. The sett up is different style. If we’re talking about having fans attached to all items to keep them cool, then it would be the same. But we are talking about cooling and area, like a box. Not a single team. On top of that the cpu is in the box that has more fans that are traversing cool air in and the hot air out, so the cpu fan can the have cool air to keep the cpu cool. Without those other fans the cpu will die in that box.

Steering seems quite stiff, a touch of power steering would make the turning maneuvers a little easier… that or mounting an outboard on a shaft from the bow.. kinda like the electric ones used by ppl on their little runabouts. ( yeah, I’m joking ) - Awesome project to follow, well done. 👍

Do you have or plan to have an auto pilot for the boat? I imagine with the long trips you guys will be doing that would make life much better on the bridge and also improve fuel economy since you will always be gong in the straightest path possible.

Yes we do have one but it’s yet to be installed. It won’t be long now and we will be hanging out for it!

Doing these under load tests, it would be interesting to look at fuel flow at each of those different revs, and build a picture of the most economic cruising speed
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 2 месяца назад
We actually did that on the dyno. Its not perfect as the prop will provide slightly different load but best cruiser is 1300rpm at around 7knots

Are those flopper stoppers on the side of the boat? They seem to be making a bit of drag. Have you thought of giving them a sharper leading edge?

Have you given any thought to making your little bow mounted crane stowable ie.(below deck) I think corrosion won’t be its friend. 😮
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg Месяц назад
So our thoughts around the bow crane is this, its not quite long enough so we need to extend it. That all said we have never needed to move the top arm in and out to adjust the lifting capacity (its always fully extended). and its made from mild steel and painted poorly so wont last and is showing rust in most areas. We have never thought about stowing is below decks as its quite heavy and we do what we can to limit lifting heavy stuff where possible. What we have thought about is building a copy in stainless and making it slightly longer and giving it a bit more bracing to allow for the extra length. As for the winch motor, thats always the weakest point from a corrosion point of view so we have thought about making that live below the deck level inside the anchor room. with the cable going up the inside of the crane box section and exiting out the end of the crane jib. its not a perfect solution but we think it will greatly increase the winch life and also means we wont need to try and protect the crane from corrosion or knocks and dings in the paint in the future.

It’s crazy isn’t it?!?! Normal I guess for a fishing boat that spends a lot of time with the engine working hard dragging nets through the water.

Yes. Very. The mark of getting it right and being so anal about the alignment, is we forget about it now because there is zero vibration or noise from the shaft.
