The group BRUS TRIO was formed a late night in fall 1981 at a jam session at Fasching Jazz Club in Stockholm. The two young friends Ulf Åkerhielm and Arne Forsén from the north of Sweden was newcomers to the town and another newcomer was drummer Gilbert Matthews from South Africa, in exile because of apartheid regime in his native country.
The spontaneous and free interplay between the three was immediately a self clear revelation. In the audience was the the legendary Bengt "Frippe" Nordström who encouraged the three musicians to exchange phone numbers and said that "you must form a trio!".
This was done, but Gilbert had to wait another two years to get his residence permit. During the time the music was growing and in 1984 their first album "Before Coffee" was released on Dragon label.
In 1987 Brus Trio made a two weeks tour in Sweden with an another legend as guest, danish saxophonist John Tchicai, with whom Gilbert had collaborated with in the group "Witchdoctor´s Son", led by Gilbert´s countryman basist Johnny Dyani. The tour resulted in the LP "Soaked Sorrows".
The following years Brus Trio got the chance to record with two other famous guests from the american free jazz scene on the Swedish label Silkheart Records and two CD:s were released:
"Autumn in Paris" with Charles Tyler (1988)
""After Fallen Leaves" with Roscoe Mitchell (1989)
In 1992 their second album as a trio was released, "AIM", where South African poet and artist Lefifi Tladi joins on one song.
Later on the trio had a break for about 10 years, but finally made a comeback and as a 30 years anniversary the album ""Celebration" was released 2011 on Quica Records. On this album saxophonist Fredrik Nordström and trombone player Mats Äleklint joins the trio.
Some other musicians that Brus Trio worked with during the years is the swedish singer Pia Olby, swedish saxophonist Roland Keijser and trumpeter Harry Beckett from UK/Barbados.
In fall of 1988 Brus Trio came back to Fasching club to make a live recording for Swedish Television. Please enjoy!
