Brush 12500 kVA transformator

This transformator was taken out of service because of a on load tapchanger fault.
The pressure build up in the TCOL tank caused the fiber terminal support structure to crack open, and trip the Buch Holtz protection relay.
TX was switched off line to avoid further damage.
What will happen is unsure at this stage.

I was wondering how the on-load change took place without dropping out between taps, the resistor coil answers the question. Excellent vid, not something many people get to see.

made in loughborough uk. massive place, did their cctv and access control systems. walking through the factory and the transformers being craned above your head is a bit crazy.

Hopefully going back into service soon. The 500kVA one in the street that supplies my house was replaced Saturday because it popped an oil seal on the lower drain. Made in 1996 and hopefully fixed and put back in use soon.

If that fiberboard is available, cheaper to repair as long as the fault was corrected that caused the over pressurization. Art like this should be preserved!

Thanks for this, great to get the opportunity to see inside... We recently installed a 33/11kV 15MVA 1960's refurbished Brush transformer on a private network for a client.. Think it may have been from a foundry originally. I had a go on the manual tap changer as we had to go up about 4 taps (offline, and under supervision of our SAP) and operation was as sweet as a nut. Even the handle had a touch of quality about it! Our local network operator was a little concerned about energising it as it was missing some of the FAT information they required for inrush studies so a few best guess approximations had been made by the supplier. Was a new fairly long teed connection to a pretty weedy bit of network so they had power quality measuring kit connected while they switched it on. We had been warned that if it was to cause too much of a dip in supply, then it might not be going on again! Although the tech could not tell us on the day as he needed to interrogate the recorder properly in the office, I have not heard back of any problems. The conservator on ours is incorporated into a sleek housing on the top with a little fixed ladder to access the Buchholz and WTI cable marshalling box which is also built into this housing. The whole thing looks very 50's/60's styling and pretty space age!

It appears the 33kv windings are made of 84 groups of 20 turns = 1680 turns in total per leg assuming max input voltage 34.65KV on tap 1 Gives 20.62Volts/per turn, legs are about 35cm in diameter 961cm2 core area, running at about 1 tesla, using CRGOS at 0.5mm lamination's.

@McCuneWindandSolar
@McCuneWindandSolar 10 лет назад
wow it would be nice to fine of those just for the copper to use for off grid bus bars this is a nice video thanks for sharing. was this set up for frequency matching. IE two different grid's connected with a matching transformer to match lets say a 50hz from one power plant and maybe 52 hz from another. I love to see a system with a matching transformer if this is not it. thanks for the great video.
@naughtyhorses
@naughtyhorses 8 лет назад
+McCuneWindandSolar AFAIK frequency matching is done with back-to-back inverters. In the uk if the frequency is off by more than 1% (1/2 Hz statutory 1/5Hz operational) the generator either starts load shedding or ultimately is switched out. Tap changers are used primarily (again AFAIK) for Line Drop Compensation. all that beautiful switchgear shown in the video is effectively changing the turns ratio on the transformer, switching in or out smaller windings in series with the main winding.

How often do wildlife interrupt service on these kinds of things? And if worst comes to them, what kinds of places do they end up?
@RODALCO2007
@RODALCO2007 8 лет назад
+Levi Schuck Transformers rarely, most often wildlife trips power lines. The bird, possum explodes and ends up on the berm, or roadside. sometimes lines melt and fall down to be repaired.

@beretmaster

+AintBigAintClever A CT most probably used in conjunction with an oil temp probe to give the winding temperature.
@RODALCO2007
@RODALCO2007 9 лет назад

that is a beauty. Too bad it had the tapchanger fail. Also too bad you couldn't get it for yourself to do some experiments on, but like you said, you'd need a big supply for it. I wonder how much in metal recycling they'd get for scrapping it? I'd like to start experimenting for myself but am just a little leary of messing with HV. Safety first!!

@bavarianmonkey8326
@bavarianmonkey8326 8 лет назад
how is it possible this thing was not contaminated with PCB?
@sinista6536
@sinista6536 4 года назад
BavarianMonkey Because not all old oil contained PCB’s nor was it requested when purchasing. PCB’s were added to the oil due to the war and the increased risk of damage and fire. They never cleaned out the delivery systems between using PCB oil and non PCB oil, sometimes some PCB oil would be left in the tanker, mehh, leave it in and so on and so forth, see what I mean? So it’s not a given that because a transformer is old, that it contains PCB. PCB ≠ Old

you deal with mostly three phase stuff and keep the obsolete old whirlygig number countin plate KWH meters?....a month or so back a new company in my city changed the kwh meter on my house...its a Digital lookin Sensus Icon...numbers displayed like a clock calculator kinda setup.

@MrOpenGL
@MrOpenGL 9 лет назад
+RODALCO2007 Digital power meters are junk. In Italy we had a recall because they were badly calibrated from the factory and they didn't comply to EU regulations (they had a FAKE CE marking!) so we paid more for the same amounts of electricity!
