Hi Clive at the beginning of your tutorial did you put the gesso over a previous layer of acrylic paint re your comment that you had used this canvas a number of times for previous paintings? Thank you for your numerous videos they are a great help to beginners like myself.
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 6 лет назад
You can paint over old paintings always rough it up with sandpaper apply gesso and off you go

Was searching for more techniques on making clouds as I have so much difficulty. Loved watching you paint that sky using Gesso and colour plus the misting. I need to practice my blending and thanks again for doing this video and the hard work you put into it. Will be looking at more of your videos Clive, there are so many different techniques! Happy days, (smile). - April 27/15

Oh lovely, I bought impasto gloss by accident and thought, Oh Heck, more beginners waste. But something made me make my own boards from a cardboard box delivered with a picture frame for a friend last week. The boards turned out quite strong with two cut outs stuck together and some quality Windsor and Newton canvas paper stuck to the best side. I painted the back side with some old blue acrylics paint which I’d mixed and put into a pot a while ago. I left the boards to dry for about a week and then through, humm, we’ll, may be Ive wasted my time as who’d ever want a painting on rough hand made scrap boards. Then, looking at the blue which actually turned out to dry quite a lovely hue. I thought, humm, I’ll try painting with my favourite large flat brush and just play with thick big swishes of heavy ,body acrylic and play with making an impromptu sky scene. Well, it started to look quite good with darker blues. On the edges gradually lightening to the centre, Lihue storm clouds with a hole. Oh then I thought it looks like a blue faiding light evening scene with the moon beginning to show. I added a thick layer of transparent white, just because that tube of white Liquitex was to hand. It looked pleasing and was fun to do, so I sat back and servaied my masterpiece with a smile. Then WOW, I face came at me from out of the moon. It really did look like a tortured man in the moon head. I let it dry and carefully picked out the face with impasto glaze using brush strokes in the same original direction. It actually looks not bad, very much beginnerish, and I’d doubt if may impromptu master piece would sell, but I enjoyed it and the magic of something popping out of one a few haphazard brush strokes not meant to paint anything. It’s restful technique an fun, try it chaps, it helped me clear my mind for my next real effort on canvas.

Hi Clive, I see your brush holders. They're wonderful! Where can I get something similar? What do you mean when you say, "bristle" brush? I thought all brushes were bristles. I'm so new at painting so excuse my ignorance. Can you please recommend a good stiff bristled brush for scrumbling? Every brush I have is too soft. Frustrated...
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 8 лет назад
+Debra Powell a bristle brush is a natural acrylic brushes are normally man made try and get a oil painting brush I got the brush holders from an art store or look on eBay

Since you asked....I did a primitive painting of the desert mountains in Arizona...a stormy sky with sun shining through the clouds in places. It looks terrible...the clouds are purple and dark...I did this a month or so ago. Can I correct the sky and lighten it up or should I white it out and start over> Its on an 18x24 stretched canvas.
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 10 лет назад
Lena Swanson send me a photo over you can try and correct it if it looks worse you could always blank it out and start over thats the joy with acrylics i do it sometimes if im not happy

New painters' mantra: IT'S ONLY PAINT! :~) Mistakes happen. I posted above about my big one trying to establish a dark blending to light cameo effect background. When discouraged, I say the mantra (and a little prayer) and cover it up. I love Clive's tip about adding gesso to color. Especially useful for blotting out large areas without having to go all the way back to white. Kind of like adding a little color to primer when painting walls. Makes the next steps easier.

Lovely to watch plus you're very entertaining. Is it a Bright that you use for the sky and is this your preferred brush for that? Also I'm having real trouble getting tree leaves to look like leaves rather than a messy blob.....Can you please point me in the right direction for help with this? Thanks so much. Sue

Hi Clive, new to your site but enjoying your demonstrations/tutorials very much, thank you for sharing your skills. When you put Gesso on a canvas am I correct in thinking you straight away went in with the sky colour? ( your Brush Techniques Part 1) How long should one then wait before scumbling in the clouds? Each time I have tried this technique the white paint does not "stick" to the canvas and the blue under painting always shows through. Any advice/tips to resolve this problem? thanks, Ian
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 10 лет назад
You can paint wet in wet into gesso but this takes time to learn as it requires blending techniques to be learned it's down to practice , or you can wait for the gesso to dry then scumble don't try and scumble on to a wet background it will lift when the first under painting stage is done and dry you can then carry on with another layer watch back to basics 6 onwards it will help if you can't find the play list I'll send you a link thanks Clive please share my videos

CLIVE5ART Yup! I was trying a bold background for decorative art with birds in a pine tree. I'm trying to make the center a dark saturated sap green/lemon yellow blending out to light with more yellow instead of white. I didn't wait for the paint to dry enough. Yuck! Lifted is an understatement. So I mixed the color with gesso and am adding layers, letting each dry until the result gives a kind of cameo effect. Patience saves time in the long run.

the worse thing that you can do mister, is to switch from an ugly foreground that I could have done blindfolded and drunk to a very nice painting, without showing the steps between, I've just lost my time on this video.
