The most significant differences between brushed and brushless are efficiency and longevity. Great video.

Thanks Scott! Crawling has been a long time obsession that turned into a career somehow. A big part of the obsession has always been electronics that perform with some WOW factor. If a customer doesn't find themselves happy with our product, then something is amiss!

Great info as always. My personal choice has been the 2200kv Stubby with the Trailmaster Pro BLE ESC. When it comes to low end speed control, with brushless/sensored, i think it really comes down to throttle control. I can get that "creep" speed but i have to be really careful because one lil bump and you can over throttle. Which just adds to the fun of running brushless, you have to be able to control all that power.

This was very informative, I saw a lot of these videos when I got back into the rc hobby six-seven years ago but since they've sort of disappeared, more showing what companies send than actually giving valuable information, thank you Mr Holmes I'm one of those that got caught in the whole "lower t number more torque" so I run my Wraith with a CC "can't remember the name" esc and an 80t motor and my Vaterra Ascender got a Hobbywing 1080 and a RC4WD 55t motor. Both of them have more than 10 hours behind them but they seem to be working fine, didn't know that the runtime where only estimated to 10hrs, but then I'm not racing, I'm one of those slow flexing suspension making things look realistic type of drivers. I have been looking at upgrading the electronics in my cars, mainly the Ascender since that's the one I use most but I've looked at going for a brushless setup but maybe I should just go for a new brushed motor for starters then, I do like the 1080 esc, or at least I liked the performance upgrade it was going from the 1060 to the 1080, haven't got that much experience from any other ecs so I can make a statement of how good any other are 😊 Thank you for some really good informative videos 👍

The 1080 is a good budget choice. I wish we could have the BRXL at that price, but 100% USA made vs 100% china made, there is no competing.

@@HolmesHobbies I totally understand, me on the other hand would love to run only Holmes Hobbies or Castle Creations but a setup like that here in Sweden means I have to decide between that or something I the price range of the Sandero rtr, taxes on toys here are insane. I had a similar discussion with one of the hobby shop owners when he gave me a hard time for running Hobbyking batteries over what he sells but I said that if I weren't running these batteries I wouldn't be there buying the spare parts I needed for that car because I wouldn't be able to afford to be in the hobby. I've had so many good talks with Hemistorm about Castle electronics that I'm ashamed for not buying because the taxes and I feel bad for taking up his time, I'd love to support guys like them and you who actually are in this because you have a passion for the hobby, not because you see a way to earn more money. That's what I love adout Element RC, they seem to have built their cars out of love for the hobby and to produce what they think is best, by the way, your examination of the shocks of the Sendero 😄😄👍 Anyhow, I love to see people being passionate about what they do, I know it's a struggle when the market is flooded with cheap stuff, I where a detailer for many years trying my hardest to get people to understand the difference between cheap and proper car care. To be honest I've seen you as a bit of a snob after reading some things you've written but seeing these videos have changed my views and I now see someone who's very passionate about what he's doing and that's something I appreciate very much, I hope I'll be able to support you by buying your stuff in the future but until then I'll be watching your videos, hitting like and commenting as best I can.

I do like the low speed control of the brushed motors but I put durability above the control difference. I bought for my TRX4 a brushless sensored system. Does great, but can definitely tell a difference in control. Like I said though, I've always been more interested in longevity over control. Definitely was a good explanation though.

I fell into he thought that the lower turn motors would be better for torque and all that so thanks for the clarification. I am just getting back into the hobby and all we had back in the day when i built my first crawlers was the old 55 turn lathe motors! This would explain why I've usually preferred brushed motors for small cordless drivers/impacts used for small fasteners and delicate tasks that require more low speed control, but newer brushless models for drills, cutters, and high torque impacts that get used balls out more often.

Best vid I have ever seen in explaining motors... Up until now, I thought "Lower Kv = Better crawling....." That being said, I'm going to build a TRX-4 and can only gear down to a 9 tooth pinion, from the stock 11, and also will be running 2.2 tires (and on the bigger side of the 2.2's which will counteract the gearing change...). The rig will also have extra weight. Pretty sure the Puller Pro 540, with a Mamba X is the way to go, but what would you recommend for a KV within those limitations to get the BEST low speed control and crawlability for a "Crawler Junkie" as you put it, who wants to go brushless?
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 6 лет назад
Low Kv has advantages of being easier to control, but it isn't a blanket fix to improve crawling feel. That is more of motor design. Puller Pro 540 in 2200kv and mamba X would be great for a little faster than stock but a lot more power and control. Alternatively, choose the Revolver 540 in 1800kv for about the same speed as stock but gobs and gobs of torque. It will be just slightly less control on startup because of being sensorless, but less to worry about with no sensor wire to get contaminated.

Thanks for the education. A drill that I use for work collects dust and soot so even a brushless motor would have to be disassembled periodically so in my case I'll stick with the brushed motor. It has lost a lot of torque but apparently the motor wasn't designed to allow for easy brush replacement. I may replace the motor with one that has easier access to the brushes.

Old (very old) video but just want to point out that rebuildable, brushed motors, require the comm to be cut/trued every 2 to 3 sets of brushes. As brushed motors are pretty much obsolete in all other forms of RC, it might be difficult finding someone to do this for you. So, you might have to return the motor to Holmes for a rebuild, significantly adding to the cost. If you're a competitive crawler, you probably have a lathe but for the average guy wanting a brushed motor, a sealed can motor will be more practical. Spend $15-$20 and run the motor into the ground then toss it and buy another.

Always keep in mind that the brushed motor will cog , and there fore If starting an upcrawl from the stand start , If the Armature is not skewed and caught when the motor is caught in cog the torque to overcome the uphill climb from stop and in Cog it is very significant . I always try and utilize Skewing my armature So as to defeat that effect as is possible. Those not familiar with Cogging effect . All bushed motors face this problem . Aka as start and stop caused by the micro second it takes for the electro magnets created on each armature pole as they transition and spin.

Quick question...on the more torque lower kV issue - let’s say 1/8th scale race buggy....you’re pretty much limited to a certain size and voltage (690/4s) - besides lowering the gearing (and loosing speed, how do you increase torque? I know that you specified mostly crawler info.
@johnrobholmes
@johnrobholmes 7 лет назад
If you are already maxed on voltage and motor size, increase esc size and use a faster KV to produce more torque. If motor rpm is already pegged, it's going to be motor quality and ability to handle taller gearing for higher amperage.

Lower kV have longer thinner wires so more resistance, running 500w of power at 4s takes half the current than 2s and thus has less voltage drop and less heat due to also less resistance, more efficient. Motors don’t have a voltage limit, they have a heat limit (and max rpm), so you stay within the watt limit of the motor. So the ideal would be to go to maximum kV on a brushless motor in x size, and run the max ESC voltage you can, even if that’s normally way too much power for the motor under normal circumstances. You reduce the maximum pwm duty cycle or throttle limit to limit the max rpm, so 50% max throttle for a “2s” motor on 4s. Etc. Maximise efficiency, minimise heat due to resistance.

Great vid Mr.H .. agreed volt up gear down 👌👌👍👍. I would love if you did cover in more detail the slot counts of the armature 😎. I very much enjoy your presentations, they are precise, to the point and have helped me greatly👍👍 I am currently running 2 of your torquemaster pro 27t silver cans in my Bully2 .. they are sensational 👌🤘🤘. I do have a question, i understand you are a very busy man . I have recently aquired a cobatt puller 11t in a bulk parts lot.. have been trying to find info, but i am comming up short 😥😓 Could you please tell me anything about it ? Im curious , would it handle 3s in say .. a vaterra ascender or scx10 ? I only have 1 puller motor so unfortunately i can't try it out in bully2 😢.

Next video is actually focusing on startup and slots/poles, so cheers! Cobalt puller is an older motor that works very well. Run it on 2s or 3s and have fun! timing is best set with an amp draw to 10% over minimum.

Bought 3 stampede's within the last year and I've gone through 4 or 5 titan 12T motors in that time. Finally found a good replacement which is the Electrifly S-600 but they are hard to find. Anyone know of an equivalent motor to the Electrifly S-600?

I want to do crawling when I get my first RC car and im getting a Axial SCX10 that comes with a 540 motor and 60A waterproof ESC and M1500 Servo straight bridge version is that good for crawling?.

I'm still very new to the hobby and have an SCX10II RTR, but I'm disappointed in its ability to handle loose dirt inclines even with new tires. I like a lot of technical crawling, but I'd like to tackle sand/loose dirt hills better too! What motor would fit my needs?

I have a Cen racing 450 and I want to use it for a tow unit to tow a trailer to haul my rock crawlers and would like to go brushless so what kv motor would be a good replacement for the 550 motor that came in it? I don't need more speed but I do want more torque for towing . thank you

This video popped up in my recommended list, very useful indeed. How about for when you're considering the weight of the vehicle, what would be additional considerations, would you mind making an addendum to factor that in?
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 5 лет назад
The weight isn't really a big deal because of gearing, at least until we start getting past 15lbs

Maybe a dumb question but would adding a lot of poles, say 12-24, to a brushless increase low speed control? In addition to stator slots

It does help in some ways, especially sensorless commutation. but it also causes a reduction in max rpm and increases steel losses, so it typically trades off a lower rpm range and also lower power density.

But is the torque at high rpm important for a crawler? Wouldn't the start torgue of the motor be more important or are they the same too?

In a racing situation, torque at higher RPMs is very important. With electric motors this is simply tied to the stall torque and how close to maximum RPM the motor is. Startup torque and feel make or break the usefulness of a crawler motor.

I have a 3900kv brushless motor on my 1/10th scale on-road rc car and runs like a camp, and also I’m a speed junky the faster the better or me as long I don’t have heat problems which I don’t
