I have no idea why but I was reminded of the original Alien Movie watching that. Another great film and a fascinating snapshot of mining history. As I understand it a lot of Cornish miners went to France in WW1 to assist in digging the big mine galleries under the German positions.

I walk the entire length of "The Great Flat Lode" on Boxing day just gone, i must of been above all those old tunnels, i looked out for old mine shafts, but didn't see any, im always amazed how you fella's seem to find all the remaing ways in and out of these old mine workings Great video 👍

Ha cheers. The council have done quite a good job of capping everything visible from a footpath or cycleway. You need to look at the old maps are see where the shafts and adits were, then go find them now and see if they are still open. Many of the hard to access ones were left uncapped (too much effort to get concrete too) but a lot have been sadly lost.

Amazing to see these places, although I certainly wouldn't want to be down there! Just imagine what it must have been like to go down into the mines for the first time as a boy. Generation after generation of my ancestors were Cornish tin miners, the last being my great grandfather. Maybe you are passing through the same tunnels they passed through or even had a part in building.

Neat video, Thanks for sharing. Interesting for me to watch as my 1800's Hammill ancestors were tin and copper miners in Cornwall before coming to USA to do mining work.

Amazing..what I see is how narrow that shaft is..tells me that the ore veins were very small; I wonder how much valuable ore remains in these old mines?

I think they did a pretty good job of chasing it out, but then there’s still going to be a lot that they missed or was too much effort to get out ... especially deeper down !

In arid places like Nevada they have mines around 600ft deep that are bone dry at the bottom of the shaft, that could never happen in UK!

@@tarewaste When i was a kid my mum and dad always took us to Cornwall for our Summer holidays, my dad showed me an old mine shaft on the cliffs between Perranporth and St Agnes, all there was was a flimsy old chainlink fence around it, about 4ft high, i returned as and adult many times with my own family and also showed them those old shafts, the chainlink fence had been replaced with a strong steel pyramid type frame, but we could still chuck stones down and hear them bouncing off the sides before splashing into the water hundreds of feet below, about three years ago me and the wife went for a week in Cornwall, one day we went to see the old shafts but were absolutely gutted to see they've all been capped in about 3ft of concrete, i cant tell you how saddened i was by this, they're gone forever

@@martynwatson4929 If you walk down Chili Road, just after it joins with Broad Lane, there is a lane on the right hand side (Stamps Lane). This leads to Tailors burrow, which is overgrown with willow etc. Before they covered it with waste from the by pass, it had loads of old settling tanks, with newts and frogs.

That shaft you come to around 7.00 at base of the Carn - it's dry - does that mean there's an even deeper adit system it's draining into? Amazing video by the way - rode motorcycles over both ends in my youth :)

Bryan Mills ha, cheers. it’s full of water just below line of sight ... we threw some stones down it and heard them splash ! I think the adit in that section had slightly gone uphill slightly perhaps ... or it’s draining into crofty.

@BenoCam
@BenoCam 3 года назад
It’s quite well hidden and maybe locked up by now as from time to time a padlock appears on the hatch. There is also a second way in which is really hard to find. A manhole cover in the woods. The first image of the map overlayed on the adit plan shows exactly where it is. Don’t park anywhere near it as there’s an angry farmer about !

@@BenoCam we have the grid reference for it the one in your video but there is nothing there, been there a few times and quite frustrating when you can’t find it haha!
@BenoCam

It’s much easier in winter than summer when it gets very overgrown. It’s very close to both the track and the stream. Be careful in there, the water is really cold and there is several places you could fall down and get trapped. I take multiple waterproof torches and lots of food and drink. It’s also a long punishing adit, low and narrow. I have got another one nearby I don’t think anyone’s been in since closing. Super sketchy but will make a great trip/video ! 😮
@kernowurbanx7950
@kernowurbanx7950 3 года назад
@@BenoCam yes I agree easier in winter when it’s not overgrown! Been there a few times to try and scope it out. We have had no luck! Grid reference seems like it’s not accurate. There is a gas pipeline marker there, is that near it ? (Just to kill the curiosity ha) I mainly just want to get to the first but before the narrow passage to take photos of the copper deposits on the stone walls! Looks very interesting down there! Oh really?? Have you filmed it yet? Looking forward to seeing this!
@BenoCam
@BenoCam 3 года назад
Been an scoped it out but not filmed it. Maybe after lockdown, I haven’t been travelling far just in case. This adit your looking for is about 10m from both the track and the stream . That should help you. It’s in the brambles ! Yeah I think there was a gas main marker on the track ?

Hiya Mark I have done in the past. There used to be access in the industrail estate behind macsalvers , we walked right over to under Morrison’s and went underneath the engine house right next to Mac salvors it was a Saturday and they had the engine running in the building above you could hear it echoing down the shaft below it was awesome. Back then it was a manhole lid in a gravel car park but now it’s all been sealed up and locked up very well don’t know who has the key.
@BenoCam
@BenoCam 4 года назад
Is there any access to open shafts from the buildings above ?

South crofty mine or responsible for that shaft mate you might be able to get the key from there we did have one but because we've had three or four new custodians I don't know where it is now

It keeps opening/re opening the staff move on etc plus they wouldn’t want to give permission to let us in there poking around . Ladders wouldn’t matter we would drop in on rope and climb back up the ropes too

As far as I know they are long gone. We have friends we can call if we get in trouble, we let people know what time we are going in/expected out and they would be ready to help us if needed. Most of the mines we go in have very good ventilation, we don’t measure for radon but it doesn’t build up where there’s is vent
