Dynamite Artefacts Discovered Deep In A Cornish Tin Mine

So in todays video we return to a mine that we have explored before, part of the workings of old wheal jane in Cornwall.
On previous trips we had discovered several artefacts related to the storage of Dynamite and Gelignite in the mine, so we thought we would dedicate an entire video to looking at these old artefacts left behind when the mine finally shut down and was abandoned in the early 1900s.
Unfortunately time and the damp conditions has badly eroded away these items, and they have even degraded slightly in the trips over the last 10 years of visiting them, so a decision was made to recover one of the old paper instruction leaflets so that a copy could be preserved for future generations.
These are of course totally empty paper leaflets and contain no trace of explosive material in any way at all.
Sadly some of the wooden boxes have gone missing, we think that maybe other explorers have taken them which is a shame as i never got a chance to video several of these. Its also suprising as the mine can only be accesed via a long drop in using ropes and harnesses so its not the kind of place that explorers would typically remove things from.
Luckily there is still one with some writing still on (just about) which is very well hidden in the mine so we do get to show you that one.
I also experiment in this one with the use of a 360 degree action camera to get some extra shots of different angles.
Hopefully you enjoyed this video, and don't forget to subscribe or why not leave a comment letting us know what you thought.
Ben

I like how you tell us where you are going, and show the entrances. It makes it so much more interesting, especially if we have been to the place at some time in our lives and wondered what it was like down there. Other mine explorers tell us nothing -we just see them going down what could be any mine anywhere as they patronisingly tell us its for our safety. As if we are going to have an uncontrollable raging urge to kill ourselves doing something we (amazingly) know we dont have the skills or equipment to do safely.

Cheers David. There’s loads of normal exploration videos on RU-vid so I was trying to be a little different and perhaps try and give them a angle other than here’s some wallys going down a hole 🤣

The tram way has deteriorated a lot since I was last there about 20 years ago. My brother used to go down there on the original ladder way which collapsed on one of there return trips, that was when Jane was still pumping and you could go very deep. Nice film mate.

Cheers . That’s interesting. Did you take any photos back then ? Must have been awesome when the water levels were down. It’s still a huge explore even now but must have been even bigger back then

I have pictures from 20 years back on Instagram, I think Wayne might have some from some of the earlier deep explorations, he said it was full of artifacts from German made dynamite, wheel barrows, tools stacked and even early glass blown light bulbs.

Cracking trip. Good to see young Nat again. Trooper that she is. I liked the shots of you descending the shaft. Amazing that those explosive wrappers are still legible after all that time. Watching that video with a glass of old Mauritian rum to hand.

Its great what you guys do to show the Cornish mining Heritage in a way that brings mining out of the museum's black and white photos and into a reality in full colour underground. In Britain we seem historically and more recently in my life time anyway to prefer mining the hard way via tunnels whether it be tin or copper or coal. I guess its partly Geology, partly finding a vain and perusing it where ever it goes perhaps on a limited budget. Anyway I'm proud that I recently discovered that my great grandfather worked in the Phoenix Mine Caradon Hill East Cornwall and delighted that not that long after I asked whether you had explored this area the answer came back real quick that no you hadn't. Soon afterwards I was delighted you actually visited this very mine, not an easy mine to access but you did it anyway and gave me the great privilege of seeing where he may well have worked in the 1870's. I can't thank you enough. Ben o Cam and team!!!!!

No problem. Glad you enjoyed it . So many mines to look at we are often spoilt for choice. It’s hard finding the time at the moment as life is so hectic but we will see what we can do.

These adventures of yours keep getting more interesting. Enjoyed the ‘different’ Point-of-view with the additional camera! Was going to suggest a gentleman should never allow a lady cart around a ladder in subterranean workings… Until I realized hauling that ladder was the purpose having her along today(towing it up the shaft to daylight) lol Really, you two are both good sports and I listen for the ‘tidbits’: the ‘forest’ underground(stolls), nobody ‘died’ today, etc. Love Nan’s braided hair! Keep up the “Jolly Good Show”!!

Haha well was only half joking when I said that obviously she is great company as well. Glad you enjoyed a few more to film when I get a chance. Nat is always entertaining to explore with, although the funniest bits I always seem to miss ! More on the way soon.

One of the most searingly painful head-aches ever; 'Dynie'-head. Powder slabs or sticks that've started to 'weep'... Itchy-forehead? Wiping sweat or dirt of your brow? Re-adjusting your lid? Always take off your gloves if you're wearing any first, or wash your hands thoroughly from a water-pipe valve or a water-bearing gutter-way before you do. If the nitro get into the pores of your head: "You're in". Once bitten, never no more. Cheers for the video Ben. Have a good Easter all 👍

Looked more like a wood spacer, and was common to put spacers in a hole to save on dynamite which was deducted from the money they earned from breaking ground. I worked crofty 74 to 79 as a track layer.

Incredible how those massive shaft timbers have disappeared, in what little over 20yrs? I remember abseiling into a loop of rope that was caught up on one. Guess it make descending easier now!

Really interesting to see what alternative languages were on the document, looks like English, French, Welsh, Portuguese and Spanish. I'm guessing their markets must've been UK (and colonies), South America (Brazil?), Mexico and the French colonies in Africa or maybe SE Asia?
@BenoCam
@BenoCam Год назад
Yes I certainly recognise the Spanish French and welsh … was wondering what the other was but Portuguese makes sense ! I’m going to get it properly scanned in, might even end up in a musuem if they would like it.

watching her pull up that ladder without her being attached to a safety line was intense. note if you are going to pull a rope up a shaft or an object rope up a safety line and clip into it to prevent yourself being pulled into the shaft should you let go of the item or rope you are pulling up
