Backpacking in the Grand Canyon can be a strenuous mission. It's a vast and beautiful place, with little water and less shade. But for those who hike below the rims, there's also some of the most stunningly beautiful places anywhere on earth.

I like the style of your hiking vid. I am a Minnesota Flat Lander who has taken newbies on 9 6-night trips to the bottom of the “Big Ditch.” Proud to be part of “The GC Backpacking Club.”

"Sorry, Mama." Yeah, there are things we don't talk about. Also, this is my all time favorite in the GC, but I haven't done Elves. p.s. The Patio (well, its nearby composting toilet) was where a hummingbird nearly killed me. Those little Cessna's are not shy!

So beautiful, and we all know photos and videos don't do reality true justice. Also didn't know it snows over at the Grand Canyon, so cool.

Nothing quite like being down in the canyon. But yeah, it snows on both rims, especially the North Rim (over 8,000 feet), crazy!

We went down Bill Hall trailhead to surprise valley then hiked down Thunder River and camped in Tepeats Creek, then hiked the river route to Deer Creek and camped. Then out to surprise valley again where we linked back up with the Bill Hall trail and exited where we dropped in. It's referred to as the Lollipop route.

I'm guessing you guys descended from Monument Point, then joined the Thunder River trail (turned left at the junction of the Thunder River trail and Bill Hall trail. Then dropped down to and followed the Hayduke Trail to Tapeats creek, followed Tapeats crk to the Colorado River, then contoured along the canyon above the Colorado at about 2500 ft elevation or so to Deer Creek. Then climbed up Deer Creek and rejoined the Hayduke Trail, followed it to the junction with the Thunder River trail, then backtracked back the way you came. The Thunder River source was really cool. I didn't realize it came right out of the canyon wall: just like the Roaring Springs that gush right out of the canyon wall as you ascend the North Kaibab trail to the North Rim. Thanks for sharing. How did you get to Monument Point? Did you take the following roads from US hiway 89A?: NF 422A to Ryan Ryan to West Side West Side to NF 425 NF 425 to NF 292 NF 292 to NF 292A NF 292A to parking lot near Monument Point. I'm using CalTopo (free version) for the above information.

Oh man, so f*ing rad! This is my exact itinerary in May! Did you guys stay up on that cliff trail on the way back from Deer Creek Falls or do the creek crossings trail?
@TheLifeInMotion
@TheLifeInMotion 2 года назад
We hiked out directly from Deer Creek, we did not go back up Tapeats Creek/Thunder River. We did take the cliff trail all the way from the campground at Thunder River down to the Colorado. The description makes it sound terrible and it probably would be if it was hot, but when this video was shot it was not too bad, if a bit more exposed at times. Just be sure to make your way down the gully right before you get to the river and do NOT try to follow the trail around the corner into the main canyon. Of course, all this from the guy in the video telling everyone else that it does not look too bad, opinions may differ 😂

curious.. you stashed water containers, but never saw you retrieve them? If you hiked/scrambled a loop, howor when did to "go back" or loop around to get them? EPIC scenery for SURE! :D

Read up on this trail and found your video. Is that part towards the end where you go last the sketchiest part of the entire hike? How wide would you guess the foothold area was?
@BackpackingTV
@BackpackingTV Год назад
It's about shoulder width. It's quite scary if you have a fear of heights. However, for those comfortable with edges, it's easy.

If I may ask - any tips for this trail as far as wayfinding and such? Friends and I are planning on doing this one in April next year for my 40th. We've backpacked before but curious to know if you had to do any significant trailfinding/exploration to follow the trail. Thanks!
@BackpackingTV
@BackpackingTV Год назад
You may ask! This trail is harder to follow than many trails as it's in the desert and doesn't have a ton of traffic. So you need to keep your eye out. However, it's not terribly difficult and especially if you have a route description and an app you shouldn't have a problem.

Not sure what you were using for fuel, mine always burns clean. Yellow Heet seems to be the best fuel, denatured alcohol from the hardware store the worst.

maybe? the actual designated sites don't. But there are large cottonwood trees along the watersources near camp. I don't know if they are positioned in such a way you could set up a hammock camp though.
