Cinemassacre Brutal Mario is one of the oldest Mario World rom hacks. It incorporates a lot of gameplay elements that weren't possible to hack before this. This game really lay the ground and set the standard for SMW romhacking.
Well, you might start to bleed out with the final levels of this hack... Not, but really the "Brutal" part just refers to Mario being a Tyran in the Story.
I've been playing Chrono Trigger recently and as soon as I saw this I started laughing. Obviously, Bowser is harnessing the power of Lavos to bring the Koopa Kingdom into a new golden age.
The way they really get into the games they're playing makes me wish I didn't play so mellow. Like if I played with as much determination as these guys I'd probably die a lot less in games...
This is probably one of my favorite videos of James and Mike Mondays. I feel myself saying this a lot for the conversation and nostalgia. This video showcased a great hack. I've been looking for a good one and after watching this I MUST play this game. Thanks guys for all the great content over the years. I can't wait to see what's next. P.s. You missed something in the Yoshi Island themed level ( like the 5th ). If you press L or R you get the Megaman 2 Woodman powerup, like the 4 leaves that spin around you. And you can actually throw them as well.
As a former SMW ROM hacker, this hack is considered terrible among the SMW Central community. Sure it looks nice, but it plays terribly. People and Staff members in the community *CARE* about how a hack is played, how the levels are designed, not what gimmicks are in a hack. The ASM (that's the special gimmicks, bosses you see programmed in ROM hacks.) will always be considered secondary, no matter what. Saying a game is cool just because it has awesome bosses is like saying you bought a game just because it has nice aesthetics, which obviously saying a lot.
Its pretty old too and still one of the best. I can't even imagine how hard it was back then too make all those custom bosses. Even now that's way too difficult for me.
I mean, I am very much into Mario Maker, but it is far too limited to even compete with Rom hacks... I mean, look at how much of the Mario Maker you tube community is branching out into SMW content.
I love Mario maker, but damn 95% of levels there are utter garbage. Adn yeah, the lack of a campaign editor with a real overworld is crippling the game.
KWKBOX the days after Mario Maker as well, people loved the shit out of that game, but PC elitists use Hacks for their Mario fix. i use hacks because i want to see what ppl do with the original game to spice it up.
Yeah. robuk the hack of Brutal Mario or also known as Super Kitiku Mario is a rom hack that was never fully finished. Some additional levels were made on a totally separate version of Brutal Mario to compensate for that for some reason. Got some patches, changes and then.... silence! I don't think it was ever put together and fully done as 1 fully completed rom hack after that. It was simply quietly abandoned... :/ And it's a shame too! Because I kinda liked Brutal Mario for what it was. Therefore, it's in form of multiple versions of Brutal Mario to play "full game", but it's not even that. So, if you want to play and enjoy it, try to find the "old" version, the same one Mike and James are playing. At least you get a majority of the levels.....
Anyone know if there's another place to see his deleted movie review for "Ready Player One"? Just as i was about to see it, it got deleted. Can't find it on cinemassacre either...
Whoever sent these guys the original Japanese is quite the funny guy. Because there's a translated version that everyone in the modding community thats well known.
It's actually called Super Kitiku Mario. It looks like they got the Japanese version of the hack (Demo 7) since that's the version which is the most playable. I have no idea why the cartridge maker chose this version instead of the English fan translation, since that's what most people want to play when they don't know Japanese. Doesn't look like it will ever get finished though, the last demo was uploaded nearly 3 years ago and it was just one level.
They probably got this version because of this choice quote: "It looks like they got the Japanese version of the hack (Demo 7) since that's the version which is the most playable." Why settle for a buggy piece of shit when a better working version is available? 2D side scrolling mario games don't need a story to enjoy them.
If that fortress seemed really tough to you two, it's because that fortress was actually part of World 3, not World 2. It only gets harder after that. As for Big Boo, if you entered that room at the very start, everything would have been transparent, that's how you would have figured out jumping to the door at the end.
Would love to see you guys complete this one! This has been one of my favorite episodes, if not my favorite so far! I've seen over 80 of the episodes probably more.

I have a dare for you. Play SMB1 while looking into a mirror instead of the tv. Set up the room with a triangle of 2 people and a tv at the points. Have one person hold a mirror. The player has to look at the mirror to play. It works better if you make the triangle almost a straight line, with the tv in the middle (tv and mirror almost facing head on, with the player almost behind the tv). Take time to find a setup that works for you. You can get this to look so good you’ll forget there is a mirror there. If you can confidently set the mirror up on its own, go for it. What makes this fun is not only are you moving left in a game in which you are so used to going right all the time, but your controller input in relation to the result in game is reversed from what you’re expecting. Another dare: play with the controller upside down (so the d-pad and ab buttons are in different hands. Buttons are still facing you.)
30:00 "you jump at the door from a different angle, I think that's cheap.." No james, you couldn't get to that door because you can't walk through the invisible wall to get to the door after you hit the switch. So you have to come at it from under.
Btw. the boss is the Mammon Machine from Chrono Trigger in case it has not been mentioned before. Also, I am pretty sure the door with a different room to be entered is not different from the jump angle but the moment you enter the entire starting room from the bottom, no matter how you approach the door after that.
Have you guys never beaten DKC2 before? I was shouting like a fool when I saw the King K. Rool battle because it's SO WELL DONE! DKC2 is sublime, and whoever built this romhack absolutely did it justice.
This hack is a classic. It’s really more of a tech demo; the levels are not very interesting in their design, but there are a ton of custom programmed sprites and graphics. They are especially impressive for the time
What I'm saying is all those graphics are from other video games. None of them are "custom programmed sprites". And the overworld is literally just from Super Mario World.
The gold boss thing at 16 min 30 seconds is the Mammon machine from Chrono Trigger. There are video game conspiracy theories about Super Mario World being linked to the Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana Universes. In particular there is supposed to be some kind of connection between The Mammon Machine, Bowser, and Lavos. Cheers.
i always noticed that they never mention those games. The donkey kong country series is amongst the best platformers of all time. from the gameplay, to the level designs, to the controls, to the music, to the way they look. Every bit as good as smw, if not better. They really need to play these 3 games.
I never played Donkey Kong Country in my life and I know where King K. Rool comes from and his fights. Their knowledge of video games is astoundingly miniscule. LOL XD
The thing with the door in the ghosthouse is, that you had to trigger the switch to alter it's destination to the boss. But if you do change the switch the giant wall gets solid so you cannot easily go back. You had to get to the lower level to surpass the wall underneath to get back to the door.
The switch is different when you go through the door from the bottom. Usually the wall is solid so you can't go back to the door, which is why the door leads to a boss fight when you're able to walk under the wall.
Although it's not documented anywhere for the SNES version of Super Mario World, you can press L, R and I think Start (or Y or B) when standing on a collapsed castle to re-enter it. This feature IS documented for the GBA port.
There are haunted houses in the original Super Mario World where the same doors take you to different locations once you go through them in a specific order. I dont think it's a cheap shot, for what it's worth. Awesome video, cool game
I think there are two doors in the exact same position, when the wall to the right is solid, it leads to the boss, when it’s transparent it leads back outside.
I bough Zelda for the Switch today, played for 3 hours, then made a break to have dinner, and played this video. Even though I'm itching to continue playing, I really want to watch this till the end :D

the last door takes you to the boss if you access it with the switch flipped, not "just because" you come from below it. You actually need to go from below just to get past the wall that will block you when the switch is flipped. All in all, it's very good level design for something that sounds like it will kill you mercilessly.
I wouldn’t even classify those as “levels”. It’s just instant death everything. Jump? Dead. Go down pipe? Dead. Enter door? Dead. Tap right on the D-Pad? Dead. ...and that is if you can make it past 50 Bowsers, 2000 fireballs and 400 hidden blocks (the key is hidden in one of them).
cheesesteakphilly, yeah they are more like either challenging puzzles or just troll stages than traditional levels. I don't think I would consider mario maker in the same category either. Although occasionally there are some great actually creative levels.
Fireballs actually do run out in the Mario Galaxy games, but that is because they are time based. The same goes for the normal super mushroom in the DS remake of Mario 64.
