Brutally Honest Super Mario RPG Switch Review 

This game was so rare in my neighbourhood as a kid. Never at Walmart. Never at the rental store. So many kids asked the video game rental store owner to buy it and he did. First day it was on the shelf, kids rented it for a weekend not being able to finish it. Eventually some parents started renting it for a week at a time, re-renting it on return. They eventually had a waitlist on the game and told renters they couldn’t re-rent it and could add themselves to the waitlist (legit there was only 1 copy of the game at the store). Anyway, one kid took it and never brought it back. I never got a chance to play it as a kid but regularly went to friends houses who were lucky enough to rent it. Im 31 now and my heart jumped when I saw this remake was being released

I’m glad there wasn’t any voice acting involved in the game though. That would have been like Mario movie 🫣

When this game first came out, I didn't have a Super Nintendo so I had to play it on PC and later on the Wii E-shop. Even then, I didn't know what to think about it because it wasn't like any other Mario game before it. Now, it's kinda grown on me and become a classic so I'm very excited to jump on this remake. It looks really good, and the added animations add to the charm. Update…I have started playing, and it’s worth it!

I’ve played for about seven hours, and I absolutely love it!!! The only thing is they made it too easy, with the charge up meter. Also that you can switch your party in battle makes it where you’ll never lose a battle. It needs a hard mode

I'd really wish Chrono Trigger would get a remaster like this.

I'm glad this was brought to the switch in remake glory. some of the adds to the combat system have been fun for me...triple attack sequences are so amusing and the remastered OST hits me in the right places. I've got 5 of the stars so far. Definitely hoping to beat it this time because I didn't get to beat the original

This was one of my favorite childhood games. I'm loving it so much. Hit me with a wave of nostalgia. I've been wanting this for so long. I remember playing in the basement on a CRT TV. Such a great game. I doubt they will add anything and they don't have to. But I hope we get a hard mode and a true sequel one day.

I always saw this at Blockbuster on the SNES shelves and thought it looked so foreboding with the grim red backdrop of Bowser’s Castle. I’m happy now to finally check it out in all its remade glory.

Skimming through your review I find that, with a title like Brutally Honest, you ought to have more critique in there. This was mostly just an 11 minute talk about nothing. About things we already know, about information objective to the game. Things like what the story is about or how peach is a healer. I'm not sure what it does in a review.

Personally I would have liked to see the game expanded. Star Hill has always felt like the result of rushed development. It feels..unfinished. I enjoy the faithful remake, but taking something good, but short, and adding MORE seems like an obvious decision.

What would you have done differently than what has been presented?

I get the price but I have a hard time understanding it, especially being a first party remastering.

This game make me want to replay SNES version instead of making me go out and buy new remaster

I played this game right after i played star ocean the second story r. I played both originals when i was younger. I found myself getting a little bored worh super mario rpg because bit is way to easy. Not to mention short and linaer. I dod enjoy it, just nowhere as much as i enjoyed Star ocean the second story r. Its also 10 dollars cheaper.

It’s so hard to explain how little I care about this remake… yet, Mario RPG is one of my favourite games of all time, and if they JUST RELEASED THE ORIGINAL then I would lap it up in an instant. I don’t care for the art style, and a big part of why I would want to play Mario RPG would be for the feeling of nostalgia, which doesn’t come with this remake, and is certainly not worth the £50 price tag.

It was weird and rare before so it had a mythical charm to it. It’s an okay game.

I own the original so I don't have any need for this. But people who don't can legally play it now. Honestly the real hope is that this leads to a sequel!

I'm deep into Weapon World, and it's the first time I've had to go back and grind to level up. that alone makes it a lot more enjoyable than going back to play the original

Unless you’re going remake this game yourself don’t knock the hard work they put into this game. Be grateful they put this game out this game is a masterpiece it’s a 10 out of 10

If you want a remake that was done right, look no further than to Star Ocean: The Second Story R. That game is just phenomenal! Growing up with Super Mario RPG, I loved it, but I admit to being a little disappointed with how they handled some aspects of this remake, such as the updated combat system. Nintendo made an already relatively short RPG even shorter and faster, something I am not too thrilled about. I wish they gave us the option to disable some of the new combat features. Nintendo should take a page out of Square's book on how to make a masterful remake! Ironic I say that because Squaresoft did the original Super Mario RPG.

I didn’t get a chance to play it when it came out. My parents raised me in a knock-off Jehovah’s Witnesses, so I wasn’t allowed to play video games. As a cope, I looked for reasons to hate others who had it. As an adult I’ve dealt with the envy trigger, and enjoying this remake is helping a lot!!! Basic for an RPG, but very enjoyable 💪💪🙏

I played the original emulated on pc and got stuck on the Smithy battle and left off there... I am a sucker to hd remakes I will totally buy this without a doubt. Waiting for its arrival to my country to order a physical copy! Can't wait!!!

I never got to finish the game since I had to give my snes away to cousins overseas in the Philippines. I was stuck at sunken ship. Flash forward today I got my first star and the game is a wonderful remake with snes soundtrack

I love it, classic and simple. Not too complex like modern games tend to be.

What? Who's against the game's presentation? It looks amazing and I can bet that most are glad that they kept the style of the characters as they are unique and fit perfectly into the game, 3D models and all. And wth does he mean with no updated animations?

if i get the money i would pick up this game! I did miss the SNES of Super Mario RPG so much and now as a remastered...i do like it!

This is exactly what they should have done with the FF7 Remake. Imagine how much better that would have been.

It's no remake, if anything this is a remaster. A remake has some innovation &/or changes to improve or at least expand the original, such as rewriting the plot or changing core mechanics. A remaster is just a port with quality of life changes &/or updating graphics and sound, such as bug fixes or smoothing animations out. Rather have an actual sequel instead of this insultingly lazy cashgrab.

If anyone is reading this on the 26th, I need your help. I'm not sure which game I prefer getting for Christmas between Spiderman 2 and Mario RPG. I already got one, but I'm considering refunding it for the other as I didn't open the box. Please tell me which you prefer

i seriously do NOT understand the " its to samey" criticism going on with "to imagine what could have been". What did you expect? a FF7 Re-Make presentation? perhaps SMB wonder or SM odyssey aesthetics? Thats like saying: "oh the aesthetics of the thousand year door remake are to samey, we can accept that but we can only think what could have been"
