Don't feel bad Bruce! It happen to me! And I had an audience (my grandkids) I did my tune up at the beginning of moweing season. I forgot to plug the spark plug, my grandkids were laughing their heads of. Great Video! Cheers
Nicely done as usual, here is a little trick. On the 3.75 HP engines when you replace the diaphragm B&S says to score a little line with an Olfa type knife on the tank between the farthest appart screw holes. This little bit of resistance helps to prevent the diaphragm from getting sucked in a little the way they tend to do. Just an FYI. Keep up the great videos.
Hello Bruce. My sister had a WeedEater 22 inch push mower that has the 10T802 Briggs & Stratton engine that seemed to go through the diaphragm & gasket periodically. The engine has been maintained as it should and does not use any oil. When the mower was purchased new; The sales associate alluded to the fact that Briggs & Stratton had issues with the carburetor diaphragms going bad. Recently when the mower started acting up this time around- It had a tremendous amount of crud that had accumulated around the carburetor gasket area. I cleaned the carburetor externally and removed the five screws to remove the carburetor from the tank. The pulse port in the tank contained what looked like rusty water and the screen and pickup tube also had a fair amount of crud. The o ring & retainer stayed onto the intake pipe when I removed the carburetor from the engine. So I proceeded to clean the carburetor and tank in which I installed the new diaphragm/gasket - Also replaced spark plug with a new J19LM Champion. Bruce, I had the engine running great at my place- Just like it’s old self. So after I delivered the mower back to my sister; She called me a few days later complaining that the mower was running even worse than before. The engine was surging up & down with the black smoke and was drinking gas. After all of that ordeal, I ordered an complete aftermarket gas tank with carburetor from eBay in which I had to drill out the linkage hole and remove a screw where the air cleaner screw threads in. The front mounting tab had to be retreaded where the 3/8” bolt goes. I also replaced the foam air cleaner just for good measure. The engine starts and now runs as it should. Have you encountered any of the OEM Briggs & Stratton tanks causing issues like what I have been describing?.
Bruce Under the circumstances- I was rather frustrated with the original tank & carburetor and was willing to take a chance on the aftermarket tank & carburetor. What I failed to mention before regarding my sister; While waiting on the replacement parts to arrive for the WeedEater mower, Sis purchased a new 22 inch Toro SmartStow which is a very nice mower which cuts as nicely as it looks. Thanks & Best Regards From Central Kentucky.
Another great video, thanks Bruce. Have you ever leaned a lawn mower over on that lift and had it fall off? Every time you do that I cringe... I just think that platform needs to be a bit wider... Keep em coming.
How's she goin'? Watching this video was great tonight!!! I have a mower identical to this one and I always have troubles with it starting when it was hot. You mentioned the automatic choke and I think that is the cause. When it's warm the choke is open and then it floods. Thanks for posting this video. I'm going to check this out first thing tomorrow!! Great video BTW and take care!!!
Best of luck. These auto choke Briggs make me check the choke even when that is not the issue. By he way I had a neighbour have one with a bad coil FYI
After the 3rd pull I was thinking what the hell? Then I remembered the spark plug. Then I started the timer on you. 5 second rule applies here buddy. You were fine. I did chuckle a little. You just proved it happens to the best. Me, Im ALWAYS forgetting switches on blowers, saws etc. My tired arm will remind me to turn it to ON. Lol. Good job as usual and many thanks.
A question, the blade was loose and was tightened a tuneup oil change carb clean, great. What happened to the blade sharpen and balance, is there an underlying reason the blade came loose such as a missing washer or bad threads, is it worth investigating?
Hey Bruce, nice video! I like the auto choke, but I also don't. I like the auto choke because it is something less to clean because of no primer bulb. But, one stuck piece of mulch can make that vane stuck. I've done two this summer. P.S. I like the big old Sears compressor. Still using ratchets myself. Take care.
Bruce I saw on Steve's Small Engine Saloon where he put his carburetors in peanut butter jars full of water and cleaned his parts, savin his parts cleaner solution. Same result as directly in cleaner. it works in glass or plastic jars.
Auto-Choke > Primer Bulb. That's the correct equation answer :) Great video again. I couldn't see that blade very clear, did it have a little sickle/samurai shape thingy on the end. I have a Brute and thought that was hilarious little gimmicky touch.
Bruce!!!!! You forgot the spark plug! I forget that EVERY SINGLE TIME I work on a lawn mower and tip it on the side... one would think you might learn after doing the same mistake 30 times in a row 😂
Have you ever tried an oil extractor? I just bought the Top Sider oil extractor very handy on engines that don't have a drain plug like Honda. It's also good on larger Briggs Equipment that are just too heavy and awkward to tilt or get to the drain plug.
Bruce Pender a real good one is the magnetic switch on the back of Lawn Boys that need either the grass bag or mulching plug installed to break the ground to the coil. Many of my customers have dropped off new coils to install when all they need is to put the bag or plug on!!! Took me a while to figure that one out a long time ago. Now it’s the first thing I look for!
@@KensSmallEngineRepair i recently had one like that and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out why it wouldn't start. I originally thought the coil was shot so i replaced it with a new one. Same issue so i started to look around the break and the kill switch. It was working like normal. Took me nearly a day to figure out the bagger was needed to break the ground. Bad thing is for my customer is that she didn't get the bagger when she bought the mower broken. It was not broken just needed a bagger lol
Most people do not change the oil or air filters in their mowers. Then they curse the manufacturer for making "junk". A good wash does wonders, top and bottom. Cleaning the fins on the cylinder does wonders, too.
Hey Bruce, I just love your video's. I too was yelling for you to check the spark plug wire. Bruce the wire. Probably to much distance between us for you to hear me. Never heard a blade come loose like that. Good catch. You should put on a local workshop to show how its done. You could charge or not. Free for single or divorced women. Does your premium gas have ethanol in it? Ours does.
I don't think ours does BUT they took the green stickers (ethanol) off the regular gas recently which makes me think all 3 grades of fuel are the same now. ARGH!!!
When you were pulling on the cord without the wire plugged in I was t laughing at you. I was laughing with you. I do it alot too...Enjoy your videos here in Chicago!
A loose blade will do it everytime! Glad to know I am not the only member of the old guy club....I have no trouble remembering twenty yrs ago, just don't ask me about twenty minutes ago....I gotta get me one of those ulstrasonic cleaners...
Tell me something, why does Briggs & Stratton make engines with the carb on the right side on some models and on the left on others? It seems so arbitrary.
With the spark plug on on startup lawnmower makes knocking sound from motor but without the spark plug no knocking sound what do you think it might be? When lawnmower starts it sounds fine.
I had a mtd dumpster find. When i test started with carb cleaner it made noise. Star on blade adapter stripped. Was uncommon 1" shaft. After buying adapter and blade I never got it started again. Concluded low compression due to scored cylinder. Not sure why it started on my test.
Several channels sell T-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. I’d like to suggest you sell shop coats with your name, logo, etc. Just an awesome suggestion from a white haired, obnoxious, gimpy old geezer from Nebraska.
Can't laugh at you on that one Bruce. I think we have all forgot to plug back in the spark plug. Especially when you get excited thinking we have found an easy fix.
Those great Quantums are slowly becoming scarcer. Checked Home Depot online; all Toro models are either Briggs or Kohler OHV's (or battery powered) with the plastic carbs. Maybe they will hold up over time, maybe not. But I got a 2004 Quantum recently that runs great even though I could tell by the condition of the deck that the mower was not maintained. For sure I'm hanging on to it for future use. BTW, this has been a "Murray" week or two for you; both the Deere and this Walmart-only Brute were made by that now defunct manufacturer around 10 years ago.
@@bubbafudpucker397 Thanks for questioning my comment about Murray. Kinda confusing but here goes. I had bad info on the dates. From what I now find, the original Murray Ohio Co. went bankrupt in '04. Briggs bought the name. Thus, the J25 that Bruce worked on was made (2010-ish) by Briggs/Murray for JD (that's good!). I was misinformed that the original Murray Co. was still alive & making mowers, including Bruce's J25 & my J46, through about 2011. Anyway, that's why I used the term defunct; I was referring to the original Murray. Briggs indeed offers some equipment under the Murray name; ie, for Walmart & maybe others. Nevertheless, green is gone: (from lawnandlandscape.com) "John Deere ... will no longer sell John Deere walk-behind snowblowers or lawnmowers after 2012."
@@jjparody8257 Got it. Briggs owns about a dozen companies, some make better products than others. I'd rather see a US or Canadian company buy somebody like Murray, than some half-assed chinese outfit. Check out this site and see tons of who's who info. todaysmower.com/riding-mower-brands/
I don’t mean to be an armchair critic but it appears to me if you’d ff to the end you could see what the problem and fix is thereby saving you a great deal of time.
The whole point is the finding of the issue. It is harder when you don't know and work to the end. When shooting any trouble even an easy one it may not be easy until you find it and then look back and say "now I have the problem"
@@BrucesShop You may have misunderstood my mindless comment. It was a prime example of my humorless humor. I was just sarcastically saying that you could just go to the end of your video, see what the problem and solution is thereby saving all the time you spent troubleshooting. Like I said humorless humor. Many things I say should be left unsaid. “Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.” Proverbs 17:28 NKJV Definitely applies to me. I obviously like your videos otherwise I wouldn’t spend hours watching them. I find you to be a very delightful RU-vid personality who’s exceptionally pleasant to watch and learn from. I’m an old duffer with several small engines to maintain and have learned a great great deal from your videos. Thank you!
I hear yah on the knees. I got a mechanic seat from HFT that has helped me a lot www.harborfreight.com/mechanics-roller-seat-3338.html also the mat like you have helped as well
