The newest version of the Do-More Designer Programming Software (2.9) includes a Modbus I/O Scanner. This will simplify Modbus RTU serial communications to any device. Communications are done independent of the PLC scan time and will have little or no ladder logic for the program.
We will be communicating to a Solo process temperature controller via Modbus RTU RS485. (twisted pair) Setting up the Modbus IO scanner, and reading the present value (PV) and set value (SV) of the Solo. We will also write the set value (SV) located within the BRX Do-More controller. This will all be done without using any ladder logic code. Let’s get started.

There are several reasons why we are using the BRX Series Controller. Here are just a few.
- Standalone PLC with built-in I/O
- Built-in Data Logging
- Communication ability - Ethernet Port, RS232, RS485, USB - support for protocols such as Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, ASCII, K-sequence (DirectLOGIC users), Custom Protocols (ASCII over serial, TCP or UDP over Ethernet)
- Built-in Analog input and output
- Integrated motion control
- High-speed counters
- Powerful instruction set (Video of Instructions in software)
- Ability to expand the system with a variety of modules
- Part of the Do-More series of PLCs which use the same free software. (Do-More Designer)
- Integrated simulator in the software capable of external communications for testing
The BRX series of programmable logic controllers consist of four different units. They differ depending on the Inputs and Outputs built into the unit and if it has an ethernet port.
No I/O Micro PLC unit - (BX ME)
10 Point Micro PLC unit - (BX 10/10E)
18 Point Micro PLC unit - (BX 18/18E)
36 Point Micro PLC unit - (BX 36/36E)
These CPUs (Central Processing Units) are also known as MPU (Multi-Processing Units) because of their communication capabilities.

In this video, you reconfigured the BRX to Modbus master. Are you able to still use a HMI while in this configuration? If not, is there any ladder logic instructions that would allow you to read from and write to the device?

Hi Adam, The Modbus serial communication will allow just one master, so you could not put an HMI on the same network unless it is the only master. If the HMI is the master then you would have to communicate to both devices and update the information for each. The C-More EA9 HMI could easily do this communication. I hope this helps you out. Hello Gary, I was wondering if you have ever tried to connect a BRX PLC to a LabVIEW DSC Modbus server VIA ethernet or maybe some over Modbus server running on a computer? I am having some trouble where the two are not communicating to each other.

Hi Kyle, I have not used the LabVIEW DSC Mobus server. However, this would mean that the BRX would be the Modbus Client. When sending the Modbus commands from the BRX PLC, are you getting any error messages back? Regards, Garry
