If you’ve ever seen or heard a guitar picking unicorn, you were probably witnessing the work of Bryan Sutton. While our brief introduction could barely scratch the surface of covering the immense accomplishments of one of the most sought after acoustic guitar players in the recording industry, we’ll do our best.
Bryan is a Grammy award winner and nine-time international Bluegrass music association guitar player of the year. Over the past 30 years Bryan has shared the stage and studio floor with the highest echelon of artists across the Country, Bluegrass, and Americana genres. Ricky Skaggs, Bela Fleck, Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton, Dolly Parton, Eric Church, The Dixie Chicks, and Carrie Underwood are just a brief sampling of the icons who have called on Bryan’s gift.
Bryan’s career journey is the epitome of chasing passion and allowing the success to follow. In an industry that often draws a clear distinction between touring musicians and session players, Bryan has intentionally designed a career that allows him to scratch the itch of all of his creative aspirations. Beyond his hired gun role, Bryan has also had incredible success as a band leader, record producer, mentor, and educator.
In this episode, we explore the flight plan that landed Bryan on the coveted island of first call guitar players. We cover the mindset, technical skillset, and theoretical approaches, which Bryan has perfected along his journey.

Bryan definitely sounds like a very intuitive, highly intelligent, articulate person defining why he is such a great teacher of acoustic instruments. It is obvious that his entire life has been focused on becoming one of the greatest versatile acoustic musicians and top level session players. One can only imagine but appreciate, how much time he has put in practicing and refining his specific style of playing. In this regard, one can liken him to Tommy Emmanuel and Joe Banamassa both of which have spent their entire lives focusing in on refining their craft and becoming the best at what they do.

Ah, I never knew that Anthony Burger helped Bryan get his start. Anthony was a big encourager of a lot of young people (me included). He passed away far too young (in his 40s). If you're not familiar with Anthony as a pianist, he was quite something to see onstage. Look him up on RU-vid for something quite amazing.

I am not a fan of Bluegrass music but this man can sure play acoustic guitar. I would love to meet him and hand him a Telecaster and say "here, try this". I bet he would sound phenomenal.
