This is a review of the Bryman BM869s multimeter for use in hobby electronics projects primarily related to amateur radio.
A pdf document of this review: github.com/TomWilkinson/Multi...
This review was produced to help you decide if the Bryman BM869s multimeter will fit your purpose and budget. This is part of a series of multimeters reviews.
A good multimeter for hobby electronic projects should be able to measure millivolts, volts, microamps, milliamps, amps, ohms, nanofarads and microfarads.
If you want to measure picofarads, nanohenry, microhenry or reactance you will need a LCR meters. I cover the two LCR meters I own in another review.
I am not a professional, I am a hobbyist. This review is not sponsored; I bought this multimeter with my own money. I only used and tested this multimeter in CAT I and CAT II environments. I do not have a way to review or test the safety of this meter. I leave the CAT III and CAT IV environments to trained and licensed professionals. It may seem like I am a Fluke fan boy, but I recognize their flaws along with their advantages. There may be unintended mistakes and/or errors in this review.

I already have this meter, so enjoyed your excellent, detailed review. It confirmed that I made a good choice. :)

Great and detailed video for the ones who have to choose between a multitude of multimeters. Would be great if you add a Hioki DT4282 and a Sanwa PC7000 to your multimeter test videos. Keep up the good work !

I noticed that in your video you said that the meter can't read the 100Mohm resistor. That is not entirely true. It can't read it in resistance mode, but for extremely high resistances, the BM869s has a conductance mode that reads in nanoSiemens. That mode on the bm869s ranges from 99,99nS, which is the recipical equivolence of 10Mohms, all the way to basically 0,01nS which is the recipical equivalence of 100gigaohms (although...that measurement isn't really accurate anymore of course). But up to at least 1 gigaohms, the measurement is within 2%+10d accuracy. Which is pretty good. The BM786/789 work the same way btw.

I've just found this channel, while looking through good meters to purchase, I'm a hvac tech so I like to have tools that I can trust, you should do a review on the Fieldpiece meters, they have a variety of features

@5:23 On your 7v5 & 10v tests, you could have pressed & held the delta button (500000) until it beeped for a second time, to put the meter into 500,000 count mode. It would have given you that extra decimal place. Also, you mention that the duration of the backlight wasn't long enough. It was increased from 32 seconds to 256 seconds a few years ago, so it's a big improvement from what it originally was.

the issue of the 867 869 are the foking batteries if you use the auto off mode the metter eat they and the 9v ones is a crap ones too y enden getting a fluke 189 and love it.

Would you be willing to take a look at the Hioki meters? The Hioki DT4282 is their high end meter.

I have reservations about spending $452.13 on a meter that is not third party safety tested. The most I spent on an untested meter was $95. Also if you look at the specifications it a tossup between it and the BM869s. Price: Brymen, Counts: Hioki, DC mV & DC Low V: Brymen, DC High V: Hioki, AC mV: Brymen, AC V: Hioki, AC+DC: Hioki, All DC current ranges: Hioki, All AC current ranges: Brymen, All resistor ranges: Hioki, nF ranges: Brymen, uF ranges: Hioki. In March I am going to a local Hamfest and will be trying to sell off the meters I am done with and I don't want anymore. If I raise enough cash I will reconsider the Hioki DT4282.

@@N8FDY I understand your reservations. The price is hard to justify when great meters like the Brymens exist. I've seen them sell for around $350 on Amazon from third party sellers. I've also seen a RU-vidr who goes by Kiss Analog mention that he reached out to Hioki and they sent him a free sample for review. He did a tear down video of the Hioki and he was really impressed with the build quality. I think you would have a decent chance at receiving a free sample if that interests you. I can't tell you why they aren't third party safety tested. I'm also not sure if this is too much of a concern as Hioki is a premier brand in Japan. I often see them referred to as "the Fluke of Japan". Their equipment is commonly used in industrial settings. Maybe they don't feel the need to be third party tested. It does have some nice features outside of the measurement specs. It claims to be drop proof on concrete of up to 1 meter, easily accessible batteries and fuses, the backlight auto shut off can be disabled (I think you would like this one), over voltage warning if you exceed 1000 volts, and there are terminal shutters that prevent the user from having the probes in the wrong terminals depending on the dial setting.

I gave away a Brymen BM867s it also had out of spec low dc voltage readings as I can member between 1.4V to 4.5V.

These meters are easy to adjust during calibration. The procedure is out there on the WWW. If a calibration lab determines it's out of spec they should also be able to adjust it so it's within spec again.

This meter stopped measuring AC within a year. Sent to service under warranty. They couldn't figure out what's wrong and said the meter needs to be shipped to Taiwan for further analysis and I will have to bear the shipping cost as its not covered in warranty. From my country(India), shipping two ways would easily cost more than what this meter is worth. Decided I will just use the rest of the functionality. Within a month after that, the meter started showing 'InERR' in all the modes and its basically a brick now.
