What Euro 7 Means for India's BS-VII Discussions
European emission norms have guided India's emission regulations since 2000.
From 2011 to 2021, motor vehicle registrations in India surged from 1.4 million to 2.8 billion, with the transportation sector being a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions due to fossil fuel use.
Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, recently urged Indian manufacturers to research advanced Bharat Stage (BS)-VII vehicles to keep up with European standards. In April 2020, India transitioned directly from BS-IV to BS-VI, reducing particulate and sulfur dioxide emissions significantly.
BS-VI standards impose stricter limits on emissions compared to BS-IV, resulting in significantly lower particulate matter and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions across various vehicle categories. These standards have been particularly effective in reducing emissions from heavy-duty diesel vehicles.
The European Union's Euro 7 norms, proposed in November 2022, will take effect in 2025 for cars and vans and in 2027 for buses and lorries. Euro 7 aims to further reduce NOx and particulate emissions, requiring advanced combustion processes, filters, and exhaust systems. The standards will apply uniformly regardless of fuel type and include limits on emissions from brakes, tires, and petrol refueling vapors.
Implementing Euro 7 norms will challenge automakers, necessitating significant investment in research and development. The future of the automobile industry will involve a mix of technologies, including electric vehicles and cleaner fuels like CNG. The transition to BS-VII is essential for Indian manufacturers to compete globally and promote local production.
These regulations are crucial for advancing sustainable transportation and improving air quality. India plans to implement real-world emissions regulations from 2023 and frame BS-VII standards for 2027, enhancing fuel economy regulations for greater fuel savings. The European policy announcement offers a roadmap for India's future climate strategies.
