Reminds me of the many 'happy' hours i have spent in the past trying to get small engines to start ;-)

Oh yes Alan, SO many happy hours!!! As a kid I didn't have that much of a clue, so I'd endlessly pull the engine over hoping it would start, sometimes with success and sometimes not. These days I'll usually either get them going pretty quickly, or identify what needs replacing, but this one tormented me for so many hours, nearly starting or running for a few seconds every time I turned the camera off!!! I think it has a mind of it's own.....

Hi Tim, I enjoy watching you skilfully working on those engines. Great work so far! I'm looking forward to the rewinding of the coil!

I'm both looking forward to and dreading the rewind - theoretically it's a simple thing to do, but it's a lot of turns and very thin wire, but we like a challenge, so it should be pretty satisfying once it's done.

Yours are defiantly well good filmed and commentary videos that hold you watching. I like that.

Cheers, much appreciated, hopefully I'll get the final video of this engine edited soon, but that's the downside of me trying to do the nicely edited videos and voiceover - it takes me ages to do!!! Cheers for watching.

@GrumpyTim yes, it's very time-consuming, I know. The bit I do is also hard for me to do as I am not that technically. Cheers

Your videos seem great to me, so well worth your effort in the editing.

Hope the coil rewind goes well! Looking forward to seeing the results :o)

I just need to get round to editing the video - spoiler alert, the rewind went brilliantly, albeit a bit ugly, and I doubt it'll last as long as the original, but what a spark we now have!!!!! Might need to cobble a second silencer to go inline, it's not the quietest engine in the fleet....

Great video, hope to see it running again in the next one

Hi ohjajohh, I pretty hopeful that it'll be running in the next video - I've spent for too much time on this project so far, but it's kind of fun all the same.

Hi Tim, I recently bought three of these little charging sets (2 identical to yours and 1 slightly newer) and managed to get one going by swapping the magneto from another. I have two magnetos that need their secondaries rewinding. I shall look forward to the next video. I think the secondary wire is only 0.002" in diameter so could be a challenge for me with only basic tools! If you need anything off my parts machine let me know. Good luck and thanks for sharing your journey! I should have videod my rebuild - there is a video of it running.

Hi c00kie84, just watched your engine running - sounds like you had a more or less copycat adventure with the worn exhaust valve, shortening the valve stem and dead coil - your set looks brilliant now it's running. I'm still formulating exactly how I'll do the rewind but I can guarantee it'll be a very basic approach with no special equipment, just a bit of imagination and patience!!! I'll have to use all my fingers and thumbs to work this out - my secondary wire is 0.08mm diameter, so that's about 3 thou I guess - I'm still in the process of unwinding it, so far I've unwound 16 layers of something like 308 turns per layer and there's still a few more layers to go. Interestingly, it appears to be corrosion that's caused it to fail, or at least there were many breaks in the first 6 layers, all of them with a lot of green verdigris at each break. I suspect there will be more breaks when I get to the centre, because it's still open circuit at the moment. It's all good fun anyway.

Looking forward to the rewind, something I've contemplated but never had the courage to attempt. Nice muff and good spot on those points.
@GrumpyTim
@GrumpyTim Год назад
Yeah, I've managed to avoid having to do a rewind up until now - I know it's doable, but it won't necessarily be easy - the wire is pretty thin at .08mm, with about 308 turns per layer and so far I've unwound 16 layers and there's a few more to go - plenty of scope for the wire to break during the winding!!! It may not be like the original, but it'll do for now, plus it should fit other engines if I ever make or find one like the original.
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@@GrumpyTim my days, I hope for the sakes of your sanity you managed to find a powered solution and good audiobook.
@GrumpyTim
@GrumpyTim Год назад
I have a plan in mind, it's not going to be fast, but if I copy the original, it's taped every layer, so theoretically I can walk away for a break between layers, but we'll see how that goes!!!!! It looks like they used some thin paper and shellac but I guess I'll use transformer tape.
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@@GrumpyTim you are doing things in your typical perfectionist fashion obviously, as a bodge artist id probably unwind the whole lot, get an idea of the length then put a similar quantity back on with a cordless drill and it'd burn out after 5 minutes.
@GrumpyTim
@GrumpyTim Год назад
The method I'm planning to use won't be either well engineered or perfect and mine too could fail horribly after five minutes of use. The biggest headache is the central core that has those outriggers for lack of a better name, so I can't feed the wire straight onto the bobbin section - I'll need to have some sort of curved introducer for the wire. If I was doing several it might be worth constructing something good to do the winding, but I'm thinking more along the bodge route!

Good work there Tim, sorry I missed the notification. Like the exhaust made from one of those CO2 cannisters. I have many of those...
@GrumpyTim
@GrumpyTim Год назад
I get so many notifications sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming, but there's no need to apologise for not seeing a video, it's always appreciated if you do, but never feel obliged. I think I've now exhausted (pun not intended) my supply of those disposable canisters now (having made the additional silencer to make it a bit quieter), so I'll keep my eye open for more - or some other alternative - maybe empty fire extinguishers - the size you'd have in your kitchen or whatever.
