In spite of things looking ok at first glance, closer inspection led me to believe all might not be well, so I will be taking the crank to an expert, to see if a regrind might be called for.
I love your dedication to the train of thought that says, "if it's not right, its not right!" Not "it's not right but not bad either.." You dont let anything go unless you're absolutely happy with it. We need more mechanics like you working on our machines, whatever they may be and many modern workshops and dealerships could learn a lot from you Paul, Keep it up!.
Last A65's had steel endcaps and it looks like it's had the Devimead/SRM conversion. Do check that special bearing to Paul if you have the cases as I've seen quite a lot of wear on them after they've done a few miles. I agree with you while it's apart get it sorted, regrind on them big ends deffo, new shells and re clean the sludge trap! Mark
Steel end caps on A65's are usually alloy. I do know the A70 engine had steel end caps on the conrods. The crank on a A70 engine looks the same as a A65 crank, the giveaway at a glance is the sludge tube plug which is quite a bit smaller than a A65 one. As they had to stroke the crank to get the 750cc everything in the sludge tube area became smaller and not a lot of people know that. Cheers.
How much play is from the journal, how much is from the shells? I fully agree, better err on the safe side as it is for a customer and will have your name on it.
Does this crank have the end feed mod done? Looks a little differeent with perhaps a quill? Great video as always Paul - cheers from that other country of wet weather rugby and sheep, at the other end of the world.
