Following on from the last video, a new and much better set of piston rings arrived from another source and I got on with the job in hand and fitted them today. This clip is made up from three shorter ones, taken at different times of the day, to follow the progress and, just maybe respond to a troll, who remarked on my last clip [comment removed, do they not realize how easily that is done]:
"What a disgrace. If this is an example of your engineering "skills" I certainly won't ask you to work on anything of mine."
Well, Mr troll, I know your name and you certainly needn't bother asking, my friend, as you will be told in no uncertain terms, where to go!
For everyone else, I think all's well that ends well and I hope to take a video test ride soon, to hopefully confirm the fact.

Looks sorted to me. Well done! The high camera angle really sets of those lovely wide smooth engine cases. Those BSA twins really were so sleek and modern in their day, and just get ever finer as the years tick on.

Well done for finding and fixing the problem Paul. This particular set of videos is exactly why I WOULD take a bike to you, it would’ve been easy to show us only the good stuff and quietly add the extra hours to the customers account. Chris

Thanks, Chris, I think it is important to tell it like it is and keep my feet on the ground. I know I am generally regarded as 'good' at my work, but I can sometimes get caught out, just like anyone else and I am very critical of my own work. Sometimes things will go against you and you just have to start again and thankfully, I think this came good second time around.

Good call on the new rings. Goods parts are hard to get, and they were even hard to get from suppliers in the times these bikes were being manufactured. Modern Honda cars still have ring problems

Thanks - I took a look at the OPR valve, first, like you suggested but obviously it wasn't the culprit after all!

Thanks for the video 👍 I have the same problem and am about to take the head off, as for parts there's a place by me Autocycle engineering Netherton who have been in business for 50 years and have loads of new original BSA stock .

Well done Paul. As an amateur, I get worried when piston rings are not marked. I had a set of unmarked compression rings on my T100R rebuild last year. Fortunately, I was able to see a slight taper on the rings so I knew which way up they should be, but it's a minefield. Glad you got it sorted.

Glad you got the problem sorted paul....why arent these repro piston kits not supply' d with rings which are actually fit for purpose. As you say there is alot of crap parts out there. Many parts i bought for my triumph restoration went straight in the bin.ps the roads where you ride look a joy to ride..
@paulhenshaw4514

Thanks Neil, incidentally, I didn't change the pistons, only the rings, but they cost nearly as much as new pistons with rings for a Triumph engine I have been working on ...

I have a good friend who had the same problem with a BSA B44 . He has heard a story that Hepolite was bought out by a Chinese factory so although they are "genuine Hepolite parts" they are actually crap. Have you heard of this Paul?
@paulhenshaw4514
@paulhenshaw4514 3 года назад
Hi Mario, yes I have heard that, and some years back they were terrible and I was apprehensive when these replacement rings turned up in a Hepolite box, but someone somewhere must have got their act together, as these appear to be very good and the early signs are the smoke has gone.
@tjr1064
@tjr1064 3 года назад
The new Hepolite pistons are very good (JCC from Taiwan) but the Hepolite rings are rubbish, as mentioned. Hastings rings are the way to go. Love the vids and comments!

Great bit of work. I'm new to old classic bikes and will be doing the top end of my '74 850 Commando (valves & guides). What are your feelings on need to hone cylinders and replace rings on an engine with less than 15k miles, decent compression, and original hone marks still visible? The Hepolite rings you used in this video, were they chrome edged? Thx.
@paulhenshaw4514
@paulhenshaw4514 3 года назад
Hi and thanks! I think 15,000 miles is quite low and the pistons, rings and bores ought to be good - there will certainly be no Chinese parts in there, so your call on that, but I might be tempted to leave well alone and, if it has decent compression maybe keep the head on too, although new guides might help if it has been smoking. The heads are a bit fiddly to get back on, but with patience and some dog legged ring spanners, box spanners etc, not impossible. If you do strip it, I would deglaze the bores and fit new rings, if known to be a good make. There was a chrome looking edge on the top rings in the set I used. Good luck!
@TornadoCAN99
@TornadoCAN99 3 года назад
@@paulhenshaw4514 thx. The bike sputter and coughed on the highway and began smoking both sides. A compression check showed a big drop from 150 to 90 psi on left and 120 right. Took head off and saw evidence copper gasket was narrow and thin at pushrod tunnels. Also seemed three head studs not at spec torque 30 ft-lbs and later when testing them would not hold that torque, pulling out. So likely the cause of compression loss and gasket erosion. Im having new guides, valves put in with seats recut as there was play in guides on one side. Ha ve not pulled the block as bores looks so nice.

Hepolite, quality. That is what I used on my British bike in the 60/70s. What make were the others you removed?

What is your opinion, which is better steel rings or cast iron rings to stop smoking.
@paulhenshaw4514
@paulhenshaw4514 2 года назад
I reckon those thin, spring loaded hard steel rail rings [three piece oil rings] are the best for oil control.

Were all British built vertical twins 360 degrees? ie pistons move up and down together?
@paulhenshaw4514

Apart from the aborted Bandit / Fury machines of the early seventies, all the post war machines I can think of had 360 degree cranks, yes.

Great Job Paul at least you found your problem. I have been trying to get my A65 Spitfire to start consistently. Been through ignition (in fact replaced it) fuel, compression wiring etc and still cant get it to start. Some times starts first kick and then wont start no matter what I do. Catalogued on my channel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KvtbW2VD2Vo.html But since then still a real problem to start and has sprung an oil leak from somewhere. It has been sent to the back of the garage in disgust. SO you will probably be getting a call from me in the New year for you to have a look at it. I am wondering if it anything to do with the nasty Wassel carbs. I will carry on with a glitch on my Honda and get on with my Norton this winter.
