Recently this bike ran for the first time in 40 years. Now we take it for its first spin to mainly test controls and look for any initial issues to address further.

Hi Angus, lovely machine. I had the same thing happen to the fuel tank on my 71 A65L around the cap, it was the ethanol in the fuel. In NZ BP made a 98 fuel which I converted to thereafter. I also used POR 15 tank sealer on the inside and was never a problem with leakage. My previous tank did leak and had been repaired 3 times so I found a good clean one after a few year search. I also used a Triumph Tiger 750 tank for touring in those few years. Your Bandit & 2 Fury look amazing by the way

Hi it's me again: though the paint job looks good, I always used cellulose rather than synthetic paint. At the rear of the tank, as you said, it looks like the tank has rusted thin from the inside! The best way to sort it out, would be to use a liquid, white tank sealer. Using a razor to cut round the filler cap, to get rid of the flaky paint. If you can do this by cutting towards the hole, then remove both taps, plug the holes with threaded bolts. Make a cap ready for the filler hole, then pour in the tank sealer. It should be the viscosity of double cream. With the filler unplugged, rotate the tank so that you cover all of the internals. Then make sure the rear end of the tank is well covered, now seal the filler hole, before finishing off, by turning the tank upside down. Leave for a few minutes, then remove the filler plug & set the tank down on the bench. Leave the tank open to dry. Hope this was helpful, as custodians we need to keep these fine classic bikes in tip top condition. 🇬🇧

Beautiful rebuild, I like the steady pace of your video, first run of any rebuild is a religious experience, are we sad, nope, this is kinetic art, aura experience and just plain cool. Thats sounds so healthy well done sir you cant buy that built it myself got it 100% feeling wow brilliant

Many thanks but it should have been better if I'd gone out into the country like the vid on the R3 from last year. Anyhow it meant we caught the tank issue early so every cloud has a silver lining. More riding videos to come once we sort the tank issue.

Sounds real punchy but smooth, look fwd to proper road test Angus, would scrape back that paint from the filler neck lip to stop it creeping

Hi Angus, great to see her run so well straight out of the blocks. Paint lifting is a pain to deal with. I am surprised how quickly it is wrinkling around the filler cap. I hope the paint damage at the rear is just a spillage but it does look like that is fuel getting under the paint rather than just on the surface.

Thanks Howard. Yes I fear the worst re the rear damage but it's been caught early and hasn't worsened so will investigate and probably seal it. I've already tidied up the filler cap lip and will use a smear of epoxy to ensure that doesn't spread. It wasn't so bad once it dried out.

Should the petrol cap have a cork seal on it,looks like a rubber seal on the video??

Hi Matt - yes originally it would have - this is a pattern replacement; however, I'm in favour of the rubber seal for now as I think it will seal better than cork as long as the rim is not uneven or pitted. The issue with the paint lifting there was because the paint extended over the lip into the neck. I've now cleaned the rim up up and will seal the paint line which will now be on the exterior of the seal.

Thanks Mac. It's not bad and sealer on the way. I do have a spare tank in factory paint - very tempting to fit but we'll see.

I removed the paint from the lip of the gas tank where the gas cap seals and it stopped leaking gas down the center of the tank and out the back where yours leaks.

Thanks for the interest and comment. Yep I agree that's a wise thing to do. When I lined the tank I made sure the lining material layer went right up to and slightly over the lip of the filler neck. My tank was leaking from inside at the back though, not from running down from the filler cap.

Looks and sounds great. Currently restoring an A70 I got from Baxter Cycle. I very nearly bought the bike you got from Yeomans but got the chance of a Mark 1 Rocket 3 and 69 Bonneville both for restoration and pulled out of the deal.

I suppose it’s a bit early to tell but does the longer stoke engine feel different from the 650. Also with regards to the petrol I always use Esso Super as it does not contain any ethanol.

Hi Red thanks for the interest and comment. I hadn’t ridden an A65 for a long time but this A70 will feel a lot different anyway as it’s gearing has been lowered by a larger rear sprocket which must have been done when it was semi chopperised in the late 70s. Safe to say that it wants to go like hell but I think I’ll have to up the gearing at some point. It’s a raw animal compared to the Rocket Three.

Very nice! Sounds a bit deeper and quieter than my A65. Yes they are cold-blooded. I’ve experienced misfiring when cold but clears up when warm . You’ve done a nice job on the restoration. I’ve often thought of restoring mine but it’s all original (except for the wiring harness) with 5,500 miles. I notice you have other nice models in your garage. Keep up the good work 👍🏻.

That leaking tank malady is nasty as "servodyne" pointed out. Hopefully, you can reline the tank or find an NOS one to replace it (get our yer wallet)--damn shame after the gorgeous paint job which I'm sure was not cheap. I wonder if BSA may have offered a factory-built oil cooler upgrade since twins do run hot and that addition would help the engine. I had a Lockhart on my '76 Bonneville and it worked extremely well although ungainly by today's standards. That lesson was not lost on today's Royal Enfield Interceptor, nor on the 1970 version.

Thanks for the comment John. I have a very good NOS tank in factory paint but am going to have a go at lining existing first. I’m not aware of any factory oil cooler option for the twins. I used to have a Rickman Interceptor myself and fitted the factory oil cooler to that. I think it was an option on original factory Interceptors up until last year 1970 when it became standard fitment.

@@BSAPowerSet Hi Angus, The RU-vid channel "The Mighty Garage" on his May 3 video took the petrol tank from his Norton Manxman, then after pressurizing it with air he used a small paint brush saturated with soapy water he then dabbed all the seams & other possible leak sources. This method revealed even the tiniest leaks wherever the bubbles appeared.

Green oil - is it Duckhams? Maybe petrol dribbled out the filler neck and along the seam (under the aluminium cover). 🤞 there's no hole in it.

Hi Thomas - it’s not Duckham’s but just labelled as a classic oil (20/50). Yea I’m now wondering if I dripped petrol somehow - hopefully we’ll see when I investigate and take the Ali strip off.

Bummer about the paint job. I've had good luck with POR15 liner kit. Close to 20 years in my Bonneville with e10 in it every day. Looks like new. Follow the directions to the letter.

Engine sounds very sweet Angus, but I was gutted when I saw your tank. Unfortunately it was inevitable as these US style tanks are notorious for leaking at the seams and always adjacent to the square section of the tunnel down the middle, either at the bottom or at the top or both. I could never understand why the BSA tanks were made this way whereas the Triumph OIF equivalent were rounded. You could try a tank liner, but I've never had one that was a permanent repair. So after several repair attempts and many resprays on different tanks I decided to go Indian for my 71 Firebird. Not a perfect copy by any means but made from thicker gauge metal so seems more robust. Many miles and no leaks. I do have an original tank spayed up and ready to go for my A70 but I darn't put fuel in it even though I silver soldered the seams where I expect it to leak.

Thanks for the comment and info - I wasn't aware that there is a known issue with these tanks. I am already thinking of lining it - it's worth a shot I think if the issue isn't too bad when I investigate. I also have a spare tank in factory unfaded original paint in fantastic condition with just a minor scratch but I'm loathe to use that as I use it for a paint match and also I would hate to think that I might damage that if it's leaking. Anyhow we've caught the problem early on the short run so all still recoverable :)

Its also ,now, always essential to carburete and time pre 85 engines with the chemistry of modern fuels in mind . New pump fuel injection engines atomise the mixture perfectly so can run leaner without overheating and advance without lead . BSA engines ran 101 octane with lead to lower the knock pressures/temperatures etc so getting one to run perfectly now , on modern fuel requires some serious adjustments . It simply is not the same stuff chemically . Do you know what the Compression ratio is ? It could be as high as 10.5/ 1. Exhaust valves and seats simply won't last under extended load on lead free pump petrol with factory ignition setting and a high compression ratio. Worth researching classic engine fuel additives as its pretty likely that prolonged running without any 'octane booster (lead additive) will wreck the head . Would be a shame to wreck all your excellent work so far .Maybe different material exhaust valves and seat inserts are needed and certainly a hotter grade spark plug. Simply running the carbs a bit rich achieves nothing . Peace etc Jonny

Thanks again Jonny. Engine compression ratio is 9.5:1 so agree that even with premium unleaded and the fact that even in the old days, these engines were prone to pre-ignition, then this won't solve the problem and that timing and mixtures will require tinkering with as you've described previously.

Hi Davey and thanks for comment. I originally intended to film some footage out in the country but had to cut short the trip when I released I hadn't fitted the number plate so I only caught footage in the neighbourhood so thought it best to blank out sensitive info. There'll be another video once I sort out the tank issue.

Hi Angus, bike is looking and sounding great...but I am sorry to hear about your paint bubbling up on the tank, so soon. I have the same issues with mine but it didn’t manifest until a few months. I was really disappointed as it was a real nice paint job. I have managed to kind of save it, it hasn’t got any worse. I pricked the bubbles and managed to massage the paint back down onto the tank, flat. I’ve made a quick video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gnXr9af5_W4.html It’s not brilliant but it’s not bad enough yet to consider stripping it all and attempting to seal the tank. Actually as I’m writing this, I forgot to mention in the video, at some stage I tried injecting an adhesive under the bubbles in attempt to get the skin of the paint to stick back down onto the metal. It seems to have worked to a degree.

Thanks again Harry. I forgot to mention in my recent reply to your last comment that I’m going to seal the tank first before attempting your technique to try and repair the lifted paint. I’ve already cleaned the filler lip and that’s fine. It’s just a good job that I only went on a short run and therefore didn’t notice it miles from home! Thanks again.

be a good video but what you messing about with the dip stick for? if you can see oil near the top of the frame its ok, as your messing about with oil level too much, spinning the video out. its a thumbs down from me m8.
