Is this why my gearbox loses so much oil? Film uploaded for a question on Facebook - BSA C15 Restoration & Preservation Group.

Hi Hugh, As an owner of a c15 -1959 (green like yours) back in the early 60's I have enjoyed watching your repair work (those leaks) & the journeys through the stunning country side! Well done keep up the candid video output and thank you!

Leonard thank you so much for that. Possessing a C15 brings the owner a range of emotions - from utter frustration to complete joy. It is tremendous fun to drive but as you can see I'm struggling with the mechanics, well the containment of oil.

@@hughferrier5837 I have some great memories of day trips from Leeds to the east coast (Scarborough) with my girlfriend(now wife) It was always a great adventure and sometimes even incident free. At the time I was a mechanical engineering apprentice at Hunslet Engine company and I assure you that my confidence in my engineering abilities far exceeded my knowledge and skills. Consequently causing more damage than good to the bike. As for your efforts I believe that you have a very systematic approach to the repairs and its obviously clear that you have researched the subject. Be a bit less hard on yourself and carry on !

Hi Hugh, I run a C15 - 1959 it's never going to be oil tight. As Denis says built down to a price. If you have a mil you can put a seal into the case side as theirs enough meat so to speak. But its a cheap classic.

Hi I had a c15 -1959 back in 1962-64. I noticed the Hugh's bike has a choke lever fitted. Is this standard for that year because I do not remember mine having a choke! However it was a long time ago so I could be wrong

There's no seal arrangement on them, it's just an open bush. Total loss system 😊

It is quite incredible, Denis, how could they come up with a design like that? I'm at a 'total loss' to understand such a design. Never mind, it is such fun to drive.

@@hughferrier5837 Like I said the other day Hugh, flawed design built on the cheap. But they're full of character, just as well really !!😊

hi Hugh, I saw this video and thought of you, although the environment and the age of the riders is a little different, but they like their grub! Hope you are doing alright and will be up to riding your boneshaker up there in the hills. It doesn't get any easier as we get older, that's for sure. I'm saying that as a musician with a RU-vid channel, which is considerably easier than riding a motorcycle nowadays. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zB2T_CpMHB0.html

Tom thank you for that. I am going to look forward to that later this evening. Your right about getting older. I discovered earlier in the year I had cancer and two weeks ago had my prostate removed. So I'm kind of out of action just now. I feel old. Just before my op I went for a run on the C15 and took a lot of video of it. When I feel I can sit for a while I'll start putting it together. Tom your message gave me a wee boost. Thank you

Just watched it Tom - fantastic. You wonder should you keep old bikes like that and preserve them but its fantastic to see them being used and how! Most were old guys like myself. Good to see life in old bikes and old guys.
