Previously, my ride on the new BSA Goldstar 650, was in cold, damp and slippery conditions. Here we get to go on an extended ride, through rural Cheshire. Riding along fast sweeping A roads, and narrow country lanes, in beautiful spring sunshine.
A couple of times I suggest/mention that the Goldstar has a 6 speed gearbox, well, that is a mistake, it only had 5 gears. Sorry about that !
We visit Peckforton Castle, which was completed in 1851 for John Tollemache, not as a fortress, but as a home in the style of a medieval castle.
We then move on, to the Gate of Beeston Castle. The castle was built in the 1220's by Ranulf, the Earl of Chester. Henry the 3rd, seized the castle in 1237, and it remained in royal ownership until the 16th century.
From there. we go to Bickerton Hills. Part of the Sandstone Trail, where we end this part of the ride. Please also watch Part Two, where we ride on some more narrow lanes, passing Cholmondeley Castle, which was unfortunately closed today.

That was a lovely ride out, very interesting, thank you. I saw my first gold star yesterday, it looks much better than in the published photos. The owner invited me to sit on and it felt really accommodating. Definitely going to have a test ride although it’s very different to my modern plastic, pointy, bike. As I’m the wrong side of 70, perhaps the gold star would suit me better. Look forward to part two. Best wishes.

I think it's a good bike. I have a RE Classic 350 and have found a single lots of fun. I'm still not convinced of the parent company commitment to the BSA brand. Lots of promises but slow or no on the implementation. I'm referring to the proposed dealer network. It was supposed to be 50 to 60 dealers by now in the UK. Still a nice motorcycle but if RE came out with a big single I'd get it no questions. Thanks for the video, you do good work.

I too am awaiting RE to bring out a replacement for the old Classic 500. That was a niche they held for many years, and I can’t see them giving it up. 🙏. BSA have certainly been slow to get things up and running, but new dealers are popping up, so fingers crossed, they get established soon. Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated.

An enjoyable video, Ian. I had a couple of rides on a Goldstar in the 1960's although my bike was a Triumph 500 twin. A friend broke his leg trying to start his Goldstar so I'm definitely more interested in the new version than the original. By the way, in my experience, adjusting the preload only ever affects the ride height and not the damping so unless the shock is running out of travel at either the bottom or top end you might as well leave it alone unless you are trying to change the handing of the bike in ways other than suspension softness/hardness. Richard
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
You are probably correct. You could call the suspension sumptuous, as opposed to exciting, but most people could live with it. If not, I am sure Hagon will have a fix for it. Those big singles were a bugger to fire up, the 1947 Norton Model 18 I had back in 1984, almost had me over the handlebars on numerous occasions. It was a bit like Arkwright’s Till, you could never quite tell when it was going to bite you 😂😂😂 Cheers

You can buy a new Gold Star motor from the people in Denmark? who makes new motors with a much improved crankshaft. Get the electric start conversion, belt primary drive and build a bike for less than the price of a vintage one. Twice as much as the fake one but better in the long run. Like building a new HD panhead starting with a S&S motor. You can get BSA B31 for less than that faker. My BSA 441 Shooting 🌠 Star is more of a Gold Star than that.

@frankmarkovcijr5459 I am not going to get into this old chestnut again (I had to resort to blocking someone who took it too far), it is a modern bike, with an old name (BSA & Goldstar). I don’t hear anyone making similar comments about Triumph with all there “old” names being given to new bikes, like Trident or Tiger or Bonneville etc.

@frankmarkovcijr5459 5 месяцев назад
I don't like them using those names as well because l think they are going to talk about the classic one and it's the new one instead. I don't have the money to go out and buy a new one anyway. The Triumph guys hated the Triumph 250 calling it the Triumph Turd when it really was a good little bike. And so it goes.Ride safe.@@ianhughesroyalenfield

Hi Ian, really enjoyed that thank you 👍 I could base your review on your current bikes, and I lately have been pondering if I should buy a Interceptor or Goldstar and watched most reviews so far, for 5K plus though I wonder if I would use it enough when I could put 5K out my savings on top of my 17plate van and trade it in for something younger, so after a couple of weeks debating I think I will just live with the Classic 350 and the MUTT on its way to stick on the back of the van for weekends up the Highlands👍 But yep a good review and tee heeing about the idiot comments! Best just block those folk and not get involved with them! 😁👍 Cheers Bruce

Thank you. I am my worst critic, to me my voice is still peeking the audio a bit, making it slightly muffled. I have painstakingly re-positioned the helmet chin mount, so it is dead Centre, but obviously the camera lens is off set so it will never be perfect, but left side of the handlebars, still looks ever so slightly lower than the right. Also there is a tiny bit of movement in the magnetic catch bracket of the camera, can’t do anything about that. Plus, I am sure my head is wonky on my neck too 😂😂😂 Thanks Alex, appreciate your input.

@@ianhughesroyalenfield I replayed the video and listened to the audio on good quality headphones and can hear a slight distortion in your voice every now and again mostly at high speed but would not have noticed it if you had not mentioned it. For me it not an issue and you are capturing the engine sound very well. I had to reread your comment about the picture as having watched it thought it was excellent. Not sure if anyone would notice the handle bars are not level and that the lens is an inch or two out of centre because I certainly did not as the cockpit of a motorcycle is a very dynamic place and nothing every stays in one place for very long. Nothing wrong with continuous improvement and no doubt you ill get it the way you want it eventually. for me I really enjoyed your video and never thought there were any issues to begin with, hope this helps with my perspective.

Nice ride out and a good review. It is a good looking bike but having seen a few of them I can't help feeling they spoiled the ship for ha'porth of tar. That's not to say it's a bad bike at all but for just a little extra effort they could have made it even better. Just little things like the stickers on the engine casings and petrol cap that just cheapen the image a tiny bit along with the pinstriping being a tape rather than painted. Another area where I think it was a bit of a let down was on the few that I've seen the chrome on the tank was not as good as it might be. I accept that it is still just about a budget bike but it is more expensive than the Royal Enfield and as they are so close on performance I would expect it to be getting a bit better finishing touches and I do think it just lacks that edge.
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
I think that is a fair comment. On my first ride back in January, I mentioned the join in the tape on the tank, it niggled me. I think the corner cutting has been to keep the price down, but like you say, it’s a shame. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated.

I agree Mike. It’s the details that matter on a retro bike, and plastic mud and chain guards along with plastic side panels, those engine decal stickers, the pin stripes in the paint, the dodgy fuel cap and a lack of stainless spokes on the wheels really cheapen it for me. It they want to market it as a serious BSA relaunch based on a the iconic 60’s Gold Star (which is what they’re doing) they need to show enough passion and belief in the project get the quality of the components right.

Nice ride. I've only seen one new BSA on the road so far. If I hadn't got my Interceptor I'd be very interested for the low seat height and the wider spread of power. The Enfield is very easy and inexpensive to tune/customise with loads of goodies, hopefully there'll be a good market for Goldie treats too. My cousin had an LC 350 when I was returning to biking as a poverty stricken, mortgage paying MZ 250 owner, he'd get chatter on it with me on the pillion (swine), your pal must've been going some to lose it! Pity the standard of roads these days would make that sort of hooligan behaviour impossible rather than just unwise!
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
I have yet to see a Beeza on the road, so you are one up on me on that score. Having ridden the BSA twice now, it just doesn't compare to my Interceptor, whether it is down to the goodies I have on mine, but the BSA just doesn't suit me. As for Pete, he had one of our mates on the back, who sat up just as Pete was laying it down 🙄 wobble, grass verge ... slide, sandstone wall ! We did push to the limit back then, and sadly sometimes we didn't get away with it. Thanks for the comment.

Think I may have led a charmed life! Still, I think my Kettle scared him on at least one occasion. I may well end up trying a BSA as my best man from 40 odd years ago is keen. Like you I've made changes to my RE, shorter, better, shrouded shocks, improved fork internals, bits that have apparently added 15-30% to the power and torque at various points, stainless mudguards etc. It now looks proper 60s and goes pretty well too. Nice ride and review, Ian. No roads like that in my part of Western Australia - and no castles, either! 😄 I like the BSA's looks and the low-ish CofG would be good for my 77-yo bones. Could the discolouration in the middle of the exhaust be due to excessive heat build-up in the catalytic converter and perhaps due to being pushed a bit too hard when very new, before the metal has had time to season? I have a similar discolouration on my 2011 Suzuki VL250, though my daughter's identical 2007 bike doesn't have it, despite hers having travelled 20k km greater distance.
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
I also thought that at first, but I am pretty sure that I read somewhere, that the cat is behind that heat shield on the downpipe (header). I have noticed the same discolouration on other reviews, so maybe there is a cat in there. Simply put, I don’t really know ! The low C of G, also makes it easy to manoeuvre around. I admit the roads in this video aren’t as scenic as my usual rides, but their flatness do have a strange appeal 😂 Cheers
