I enjoyed meeting the BSA Goldstar 650 for the first time, and despite the cold weather and greasy roads, I enjoyed this ride. No bike is perfect though, and upon reflection, I didn't fall in love in the same way I did with my Interceptor 650 (or Classic 350 for that matter).
The Engine has plenty of torque, though due to the weather conditions, I couldn't test this fully. The gearbox was slick, though when pressing the lever down to make sure you are in first, it travels further down, and again when ensuring you are in top gear, it does the same there too ; a bit of an odd feeling, but one which you would get used to.
I mention a lot, that this is a small / low motorcycle. I actually found it to be quite cramped in the leg department, though this was hard to explain, so I didn't mention it in the video. It would definitely suit shorter riders, though I don't consider myself to be tall at 5ft 9" with an inside leg of 30". I really do suggest that if you are interested in the BSA, you try it for size.
The chassis / suspension, felt nice. Plush without being vague, and better than the original units fitted to the Interceptor (I have YSS shocks fitted to the rear on mine).
The Pirelli Phantom Sports Comp tyres, are the same as fitted to the Interceptor. On the Interceptor, I think very highly of them, with very little "white lining", but on the BSA, it was the opposite. very prominent "white lining". Whether this was due to the relaxed frame geometry on the BSA, I really don't know. Maybe the tyre pressures were a bit low......?
Overall though, the BSA felt good, and I was impressed, but it didn't grab me by the wotnot's and say "buy me". Perhaps another ride in better weather, would change that, but controversially, I don't think it looks as pretty as the Interceptor either. Of course, I have no doubt whatsoever that it will sell, as it is a nice motorcycle, ideal for bimbling along A + B roads, with the occasional dual carriageway blast.
Thanks again to Roger at Crewe Motorcycle Centre, for inviting me to have a test ride, and thank you for watching.

Absolutely. It was very chilly, and greasy in places. I didn’t want to go throwing £7k worth of bike in the hedge 😂 The Interceptor has the edge in my opinion. Cheers for the comment and the like, really appreciate it.

Good to hear the views of an Interceptor owner and good to see a Goldstar in silver. It is always surprising the effect that small changes to the ergonomics of a bike actually make. In the past I have lifted a set of handlebars by less than an inch and you would think it was a completely different bike. An even greater change was felt when I lowered the footpegs and moved them forward by 3/4 of an inch. Manufacturers really should make 'bars and pegs fully adjustable. (yes, I am 6'4'' 😭) The BSA will give riders more choice, which is always a good thing. I think BSA will struggle given that RE have had the market to themselves and have a large dealer network already set up. Mahindra also owns Jawa, so maybe they will bring those to the UK as well. 😀👍
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
Totally agree with the adjustable pegs, a simple idea, which could make the world of difference to so many. I haven’t heard many good things about the Jawa, hopefully the future is brighter for the BSA. Thanks for the comment.

@@ianhughesroyalenfield thanks Ian! I’ve owned an interceptor and loved it, need to road test the Super Meteor next. @@ianhughesroyalenfield thanks Ian, I will defo try one, if you don’t you’ll always wish you had. I think BSA is on to a winner though, perhaps they will be improvements later down the line when they’re established and taken note of the feed back off owners. There’s two things i didn’t like were obvious to me. The discolouring of the exhaust, that should be chrome and the poor quality switch gear. Bu like I said next year they will probably improve on things like the RE. Cheers Ian take care and enjoy 2023 on your bike 😎👍

@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
@@chrisgreen8128 yes, that discolouration of the exhaust by the foot peg, is a bit odd, and the rest of it changing so soon is a bit worrying. I am actually not a fan of stainless exhausts, due to the way they discolour. Have had them on other bikes, and they are a pain to keep shiny. That’s the only thing holding me back from buying a pair of the Hitchcock’s free flow down pipes for my Interceptor. Thanks for the chat, much appreciated.

As a GoldStar owner since the 1st of March I'm with you about comparing it to an Interceptor. A single and a twin are totally different, character wise. Strangely I'm a much bigger guy than you yet i didn't think it was as small as you thought. I did try an Interceptor, which i really liked but the servicing of the two bikes made me finally go for the BSA, there's a big difference in servicing intervals and costs eg. my first service was at 500 miles and only cost £100, at my dealer in West Lancashire.

Morning Ian. Good to hear that you are enjoying the Goldstar. Having ridden it twice, this first short ride in pretty awful conditions, then a second, much longer ride (two vids) in Spring sunshine, it really is a lovely bike for blatting around our pothole covered country lanes. That seat, being so much more comfortable than the Interceptor, even better than the touring one I had on mine. It must be just me who found it a small bike, as absolutely no-one has ever mentioned it 😂. I have heard people complain about the rear suspension, but I actually quite liked it, again compared to the Interceptor, it was pure luxury. Even after the second ride, at the end, I do say that I like it, but that I preferred the Interceptor, but since selling the Interceptor, I am not so sure. Roger has said that I can take the Goldstar out again in the spring, so it would be rude to refuse the offer 😉. I have also seen that there are a good selection of accessories beginning to appear, from the likes of Moorespeed Racing, that’s always a good thing. Thanks for watching this video, and have a Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄

Well the battle of the 60,s will be back . Having rode a friends old Goldie back then in racing style and a RRT2 GEAR BOX , it is one to put in the lounge and admire ,rather than a Christmas tree . My old Triumph was a lot more nimble for buzzing around on and no slipping the clutch to 30 mph . I think they have made a nice job of this new one and seems suited to the traffic of today . Pin striping on a Royal Enfield is done by hand, with paint and a brush. I love that idea. Having seen it at the NEC, this was one of my few doubts. Detail. I think this bike needed quality parts,and from what I could see, paint and fasteners had a way to go. Stickers on the engine too. Why not embossed? Even Mutt stick a casting on a Chinese engine. I want it towork out, however it's been such a long wait, and as yet no bikes actually delivered. I'll hold on to my enfield, and with the 650 meteor on the horizon, lots of bike for your quid.

Nice lookin bike. I can understand the Interceptor comparisons, fair enough till you get to the engine of course. The imitation push rod tunnel is out of place, as the Goldies had an alloy engine with the push rod tunnel integrated, this represents the iron engined B31/33. Still looks good though but and my comment is not a criticism. Glad to hear the suspension is better than the Interceptors, as this is the Interceptors weak spot. I know people criticise the Inty’s seat, but I/we have never had a problem with it. The BSA is gonna have to be a damn good bike to compete with the Interceptor. Will defo have to blag a test ride. Will I buy one? Yes; provided the bike is priced sensibly and I enjoy the test ride. A great video Ian, as always; your opinion is valued. @ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
Hmm, interesting question. Believe it or not, in my opinion, the seat to foot peg position on the BSA feels cramped when compared to the Classic 350 (I am 5ft 9” inside leg of 30”), and I am really surprised others haven’t mentioned that point. Although cornering ability is similar on both, I didn’t find the BSA to be as confidence inspiring as the 350, but that might be because I am more familiar with the 350 (owned since July 2022), or because the roads were awful. The little 350 corners really well, if a little slow to turn in ; I found myself not as smooth on roundabouts on the BSA. The Ceat tyres on the 350 certainly suit it better, than the Pirelli Phantom tyres suit the BSA, but as mentioned , that may be down to pressure’s. I suppose the question would be, if I could get a straight swap ; the 350 for the BSA, would I do it 🤔 You know what, I am not sure. Yes the 350 is a lot slower in all aspects, but it is an absolute joy to bimble around with no urgency to get to wherever I am going. I don’t know whether that has helped at all, I don’t think I have answered your question very well, but taking the power/torque out of it, makes it difficult. Obviously the price has to be considered, with the BSA being about £3k more than the 350. Thanks for your interesting question, it had me scratching my head a bit 😂

@@ianhughesroyalenfield Hi Ian, there is no doubt the frame design could be shorter in height than the bikes u have. After all, this is supposed to be a copy of the BSA, not any RE motorcycles. If the frame is not as tall, that would be a reason for it to feel smaller, most definitely. So obviously they're not using a Royal Enfield frame to create a BSA. We know the seat generally sits directly on the top frame and the pegs on the lower cradle bars. Ground clearance is created by the front fork length and the swingarm angle. Tires also create ground clearance. Larger tires make more clearance. But frame height is definitely a cause for a cramped riding position. First.... good job on the review overall. Second... whenever the bike gets the slightest bit above idle you shift to the next gear. It's unnecessary and a bit annoying. I know it's not a sport bike and I know it's a single cylinder. I had a single 650 also not long ago. Nevertheless, you are almost, not quite but almost, lugging the bike. Let it wind up just a little bit every now and again. Even on a new bike it won't hurt a thing. Three... All of the other people who have reviewed the bike that I've watched have gotten the bike up to about 80 mph and they say that the bike is amazingly smooth and balanced and didn't vibrate like they expected. You never went fast but you were speculating that the bike wouldn't be as good as the interceptor at higher speeds since the interceptor is a twin. Yes, that is normally what one would imagine. However, you may not be correct if the other reviewers were honest. Thanks and have a great day.

Thank you. Under normal circumstances, as in when the road conditions aren’t greasy and -2 degrees ambient temperature, I guarantee that my riding style would have been completely different. It was actually touch and go as to whether I would have been allowed to get out on the BSA at all. I have bought many new bikes over the years, and know the running in procedure, and fully understand that letting the bike lug, is almost as bad as giving it a damn good thrashing. I thought the short blasts I gave it on the open roads were ok, taking it just over 60mph (our National speed limit). I thought that I suggested that both bikes would be similar in performance, but the power was delivered in a different way. The Interceptor being higher revving, the BSA being more low down (plodder). I do apologise if my terminology was incorrect, but as I am unfamiliar with doing bike reviews (this being my first new bike review), trying to come up with the right words, whilst concentrating on the rather difficult road conditions, is obviously something I need to work on in the future. It genuinely is a nice bike, but not enough for me. Obviously, most of us hope it does well, but it won’t be for everyone. Cheers

@@ianhughesroyalenfield It's a supply and demand thing that makes the BSA 650 more expensive than the RE 650, RE produce around 800, 000 motorcycles a year of many different models opposed to BSA's 1,000 per year of the current one model range. With RE producing so many more motorcycles they can drive a harder bargain for bought out parts from the manufacturers, also RE's motors are their own design and built inhouse, BSA have their motors built in Austria and shipped to India for final assembly, that adds to the cost of the final product. All in all, I don't consider the BSA to be over priced.

What do you think of how low it is?
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
Hmm, to me, the distance between the foot pegs and seat, is too cramped, and I don’t consider myself to be tall at 5ft 9”. I seem to be the only person who mentions this. The Classic 350 has a nicer seat to foot peg ratio, as has the Interceptor. The BSA is so easy to put your feet down at junctions etc, newish riders and shorter riders will love it. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Hi i am 6'00 and wondering if this BSA IS not too small for me regarding the low Seat. Anibody who ride this bike as a tall man could Say ? Merci d'avance salutations de France.

Good morning, I am 5ft 9” and did find it quite low, as you could hear me say, but I seem to be the only reviewer who has mentioned it. “The All Year Motorcyclist”, has ridden it twice, and never mentioned it. He is 6ft 2” and loved it. Here is a link to one of his rides on the BSA ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qedqEVMkJkk.html Also Mr Darcy and the Old man, have ridden it. They are both tall people ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EHxh1Gmi-a8.html I hope this helps. Obviously, the only real way to tell, is to try and get a ride on one yourself. Cheers

Hi Phil, if you are interested, I will be taking the Goldstar out for another ride on Tuesday, video will be uploaded towards the end of the week. There are no dealers local to me, so when visiting family, about 100miles away, I visit the dealer too. He has asked me to take it on an extended ride, so I might make it a two parter 😉

@@ianhughesroyalenfield frankly, Interceptor 650 is the best choice for classic lineup in the market rn, for its value for money, its BQ isn't that bad (although for certain section, i'd say it's very awful especially its bolt and the groove, I've replaced it with stainless steel bolt and hexa bolt). Its engine I could say, it's fantastic, the sound of its machine combined with a pair of free flow exhaust is nothing but a symphony, gotta love the song of 270 deg. firing order, which also come with deep and burble exhaust note during deceleration. Have no regret at all after pick this Interceptor over Triumph Speed Twin 900, whilst Triumph comes at the double price of Interceptor yet it's been built outside England already.

I have also replaced many of the bolts on mine, using stainless button head hex screws. I haven’t removed the baffles from my Scorpion exhausts as she is sweet enough. Amazing bike, at a realistic price. Thank you.

Massive oil cooler rad totally kills the retro look.. Having had a good look around one the crank case castings look like they’ve been painted with silver Hammerite. Enfield have nothing to worry about
@ianhughesroyalenfield
@ianhughesroyalenfield Год назад
The Rotax engine is water cooled, hence why the rad is so big. Admittedly it could do with being smaller though. I have ridden it twice now (total 3 vids), with the second run being quite a lengthy one, making two vids. Tbh, the rad didn’t seem to stand out so much second time round. Not a bad bike at all, rides our pot hole ridden roads quite well. Would sound better with the baffle removed, as it sounds a bit wheezy as is. Agree that Enfield have nothing to worry about.

Prefer look of bsa, be good to hear with baffle out no one done that yet. Just hope bsa manage to survive all release date fiasco and make a a65 or a10 update version that would be more popular I think, even a learner class bantam!! ✌️😎

Yes twins more popular, but if they got bantam right would sell loads getting brand more cash sales for a65 a10 bikes. Classic egg shape a65 more hp pre unit (looks) for a10 say 50 hp a10 65hp a65? Bet they would fly off shelves! 💯

Totally agree. In the early 80’s, my mate had a 650 Lightening whilst I had the 500 Royal Star. The 650 was superb, he let me ride it a few times. A new version would be better air cooled, but than it might end up just like the Interceptor……….oh god, there’s a minefield of images in my head, what have you started 😂. A little 125 called the Bantam, would indeed sell well too. Cheers
