This video shows two units equipped with BSI couplers. Couplers provide mechanical and electrical connection, as well as providing a supply of air.
Drivers must carry out various checks before coupling. These could include:
- Checking the height and alignment of the couplers.
- Checking there are no "non multi" signs.
- Checking the condition of both couplers.
* Air connection seal
* Coupling pin
* Gathering horns
* Electric box retraction handles
* Manual uncoupling lever
* Electric box cover in correct position
* Electrical box serrated rubber pads
This video shows a noticeable height difference between the two units. This is at the very limit of the allowable height difference.
Notice how the gathering horns lower one coupler and raise the other. As the electrical boxes connect, the serrated rubber pads engage and the boxes rotate downward - exposing the electric connection pins underneath.
The manual uncoupling bar of the left hand coupler (horizontal bar near the top of the coupler) moves outward and then back in slightly. This occurs as the two coupling pins are sliding past each other then lock in place.
At the top of the coupler you can see the round rubber seals that protects schrader connections. When the two rubber seals meet they are pressed together. Between these seals and the flat pressure plate they sit in, they form an air connection.
At the end of the video the units have formed an air connection and are coupled mechanically. The electric pins are connected but the unit is not electrically coupled at this time.
