We were noticing caterpillar poop and chewed up tomato leaves in our tomato alley. So we had to pull out the BT spray (Bacillus Thuringiensis) to stop the life cycle of the caterpillar culprit.
BT targets most caterpillars. BT is a bacteria virus that erupts and stops the life cycle of the caterpillar. The caterpillar must eat some of the sprayed plants leaves for this to happen. You want to make sure you have good spray coverage on both sides of the leaves and to spray during the evening so you DO NOT harm beneficial insects.

Just wondering if the dish soap you mix with the BT actually kills the bacteria (bacillus thuringiensis) that you're wanting and only leaves the dish soap to kill the caterpillars on its own?
@TheNakidGardeners
@TheNakidGardeners 4 года назад
The dish soap is just used as a surfactant to help coat the leaves. It does not harm of the BT. We have been using this for two years now. We are getting great results from it. What do you use as a surfactant for the BT? Have you been seeing results?
@DannyTillotson
@DannyTillotson 4 года назад
@@TheNakidGardeners I use it in the soil so there's no need for me to use any surfactant. But I'm 99% sure that dish soap kills bacteria that's the whole purpose of why they make it, and BT is indeed a bacteria. A bacteria we want to use to kill the larvae as its harmful for them but safe for us! I'm sure you're killing the BT but the dish soap you are using is what is giving you great results as that also kills insects. Anyway keep up what you are doing bro. Anything that works right? 🙏
@ram33309
@ram33309 Год назад
Avoid hard, or alkaline (pH over 7.0), water when diluting Bt for spraying. It reduces its effectiveness. If you add insecticidal soap as a sticker, add it to the Bt mix at the last minute. Because it tends to be alkaline, it may reduce the effectiveness of the Bt.

Can you put this on plants with edible leaves like cabbage and collards? I know you of course wash after harvest, but wanted to be sure. And does it work for slugs? I finally saw its the slugs that are eating my collard and kohlrabi leaves. Slugs were eating my strawberries earlier this year. I put straw around them and that helped but now they are eating my brassicae plants
@TheNakidGardeners
@TheNakidGardeners 4 года назад
This is the main spray we use during the fall due to the bugs that attack our brassicas. We spray them once a month to keep cabbage loopers, cabbage moths, and caterpillars from eating our collards and other crops

Is it okay to use olive oil with the BT to make it stick to the leaves
@TheNakidGardeners
@TheNakidGardeners 2 года назад
Olive oil would not help the BT cover the leaves. Plus it would be as heavy as the BT. The surfactant would be lighter to help spread the three components of the oil, water and solvent.
