BT Telephone Sockets: What to Do if Want to Install Broadband Router away from Master Socket? (#264)
After we have a newer BT master socket installed, I found that I have to install my broadband router to the BT master socket. However I have been having my router at the first floor for years and I still want it to be upstairs. This video shows you what I did to intall a broadband router away from the new style BT master socket.

When you remove the faceplate on the master socket, the tab behind it can be used to route the unfiltered signal up a telephone or cat5e cable (using 2 wires only). If the cable from the upstairs telephone socket runs here you simply need to connect it to the master socket. Then plug your filter into your bedroom socket and plug your router into it. Both sockets will still be avaiable to use as a phone line. No need to run long externsions.

Hi, Thank you for your helpful information. Have a good day!

Doing that would create a bridge tap on line which could slow down internet speed

@@ESS_Comms Thank you for the info! I do have the impedance matching components at the other end, thus the internet speed is above the estimated speed from Vodafone or now Plusnet. Have a good day!

You could hardwire your extension into the back plate (into the clear clip to the right hand side) if you use you extension for both phone and BB or hardwire it into the back of the front plate if you only use it for BB.

++then you won’t need the filter at the other end just a bt to rj11 cable to plug directly into the router (or change the extension to an rj11 plug)

Thank you for your hard-wiring comments. It will surely help someone who like to do tidier hard-wiring instead of plug-in type of extension or wiring. Thank you and have a good day!

You can buy the single port faceplate from Ebay

Will broadband work if I just connect my broadband connection to the master socket instead of the faceplate ?
@RepairDIY
@RepairDIY Год назад
if you remove the faceplate, there is a BT socket for providing both telephone and broadband signals. In this case, you need a micro filter to plug into the BT socket, then your router and telephone can be plugged into their respective sockets. The answer is: your broadband will work if you plug it into the master socket(without faceplate) via a microfilter. have a happy day!

@@RepairDIY thank you I will try this I have the same master socket has you I have a micro filter but it says on the micro filter do not fit if you have a pre filtered master socket so I'm presuming it want work

@@shanehutchinson785 Hi, if your master socket unit has two sockets and you do not remove the faceplate, then you do not use the microfilter! you just plug your rout directly to that square socket and your telephone to that narrow socket. Enjoy your day!

Interesting vid, not too sure but I thought the socket you are using is the one for testing the phone line and not to be used as an option in extending. If you know the colours of the two wires then add a dedicated BB extension cable connected up using the a&b terminals.

Hi, Thank you for your comments. Although my extension line is extremely long, my Broadband and telephones have been working well in the past two years. I also switched to Vodafone broadband last year and I placed the router at the same location. Stay Safe! Have a good day!

you could check if you are using the correct cable/connector. you may be able to find the correct cable in the original packaging box. good luck!

I've had nothing but problems with these Mk4 Openreach master sockets. Twice now I've had the issue after 3 years where the front plate stops the phone line or the broadband working. I've had to buy a replacement master socket 5c mk4 and fit the new faceplate onto the original backing plate. They must use some incredibly cheap components inside the faceplate for this fault to happen considering there are no moving parts inside to my knowledge. Anyone else had the same issue?

Update: In March 2023, I switched to Vodafone Full Fibre broadband with the router THG3000. Now the telephone line is over the fibre and my old telephone is plugged directly into the router's Tel 1 socket. No longer use the copper telephone line and BT/OR may switch off the copper wire network in near future. Have a good day!

Just buy a DSL cable and run it around your skirting boards?

A good alternative solution! Particularly if you don't have the telephone cable already in place. You could buy a DSL/ADSL cable up to 20 meters. Have a good day!

Hi I ripped my broadband cable, is there anyway I can use my WiFi without the broadband cable?
@RepairDIY
@RepairDIY 3 года назад
hi, if the broadband cable (from router to telephone socket is not connected, you surely have no internet, but the wifi should still work, such as sharing a networked printer. HI, as each time we change ISP we receive a new router, so just find your old router box and take out the broadband cable for this router, they should be the same? or you have to buy one from ebay? good luck!

I want a master socket 5c transferred upstairs to my room. How can I do this?
@RepairDIY
@RepairDIY 3 года назад
hi, i recommend that you keep the BT master socket where it is, without removing the existing backbox of the master socket (BT should be happy with not touching their backbox?). if you really like a master socket upstairs, you could buy another one, and install it upstairs. the connections are very similar. Have a good day!

@@RepairDIY Thank you. Do you recommend me using a powerline adapter or a long ethernet cable going up the stairs and through the house?
@RepairDIY
@RepairDIY 3 года назад
@@tomdenub3302 hi, good question! i have never used any wifi extenders yet. When my router was downstairs, i did use two 15 meter ethernet cables to connect my computers upstairs for a few days, without fixing the cables to walls or floors. Fixing cables to walls and stairs is not a easy job and it may look no good? you could try wifi extenders, but for me, i just put the router upstairs close to my desktop computers, and I can use mobile phones and laptops downstairs everyday. I also tried to use an old router connected to the active router with ethernet cable, the active router was upstairs and the old router downstairs. It was working but I decided not to fixing the cable to walls and stairs, so I just dropped the idea. I think the telephone line is much easier to climb the stairs (I already had them years ago), or just use the wireless wifi extenders? Have a good day!
