The track is adapted from J. Cole’s song “Born Sinner,” the title track and final song on the rapper’s sophomore album released five days after BTS’ debut on June 13, 2013. The track keeps the same production and composition as the original, but BTS rappers RM, Suga and J-Hope rewrote the lyrics. While Cole’s “Born Sinner” was a dedication to doing better, “Born Singer” was BTS’ reflection on the hardships they felt in their first month after debut.
This song is created exactly one month since BTS debut, and three days since BTS fandom had adopted the name ARMY. Bang PD told them to make a song with what their feeling at that time cause that feeling gonna fading away with time so Yoongi wrote the lyrics on notepad in broadcasting station.. In this song Yoongi discussed BTS’s concerns about identity, talking about “the line between pre- and post-debut, between idol and rapper,” while Namjoon admitted of his mental state when they debuted, “Frankly, I was scared, said I’m all that, but proving myself.”

I love watching the various live performances so you can see the way they change and grow. Born Singer is an amazing song when it's raw and new, a declaration... But by Proof, it's much more contemplative, much less raw. But no less sincere.

born singer's live performance in 2015 felt very moving and emotional. and the latest live performance of BTS born singers when they grow up sounds very cool and proud. they always work hard and make songs and lyrics that cannot possibly be meaningless. btw they are also very famous for their cool live performances!! brand concerts being one which must be visited at least once in a lifetime💜💜
You were correct! RM was talking about his debut look. Had the Mohawk and wore sunglasses. Born Singer happens to be an adaptation of J.Cole’s Born Sinner. May I recommend one of my favorite songs called HOME? There is no music video but there is of course color coded lyrics and a live performance on the Jimmy Fallon show. 71 year old Army here. There is a live performance of 3 songs, including this one, released before their military service and after their "Permission to Dance Concerts" in Las Vegas. It is filmed in the desert and Anderson. Paak guest stars on the drums for one song. It's titled "Proof Live". It's super good!!! 💜
Love this song so much. Always sung with such emotion because they honestly lived what the rap line is talking about. JK was often in tears by the end of it (and then teased by his hyungs but out of love, of course). I truly appreciate the admiration you seem to have for them. Hope you continue to enjoy the journey.

Fun Fact: BTS is that rare phenomenon of artists who are even better live. Even while dancing hard choreo. They are insanely amazing. RM mentioning his looks is because they were mocked for their looks and called The Ugly Idol Group because they were signed on talent, not looks. The only one scouted on looks was Jin, but he worked hard to earn his place in the group with his talent after that. He is technically the only one who meets the ridiculous KPop male idol beauty standard, but BTS is changing those standards just by existing as themselves. We think they are all objectively gorgeous, but they still don't meet KPop male idol beauty standards, which are cartoonish and strange IMO. And I agree - no skips in their discography. Every song is damned good, meaningful, and amazingly written and executed. Good luck finding a bad song.
There is no bad songs indeed, some can be less my taste but none are lazy. And they are often way better live. I know that you explore the rapline first (and I enjoy it a lot) but just try a vocal line song to tease you in between. *House of cards* (live) is a good start!
Teej, lovely reaction. Born Singer had me in tears the first time I heard it! I've been an ARMY now for 4+ years and still do not understand the way these young men were treated and are still being treated to this day. Their music is awesome, easy to understand if you have half a brain. Their dancing is great and I would even say unmatched to a certain degree. I've tried to listen to other kpop groups but keep coming back to BTS. Don't get me wrong, there are songs by other groups I like I just am not invested into them like I am with BTS. Backing track are necessary for every live act, I know we've been joking since the 1970s about the "invisible guitar player" backstage (news flash, it's backing tracks). But they try to keep everything live whenever possible. In particular, if they aren't dancing their asses off, then the performance is very live.

The sheer talent these 7 have is balanced by their humbleness and work ethic. This was an early song never fully released till 2022 for streaming/purchase. Such passion for music. Fyi on live videos it’s tricky because a lot use stage mixes of different concerts or different cameras of same show to keep it from being taken down but you can hear the mics are on.

The guys have said the song is about loss and grief but everyone agrees the MV is about a ferry sinking tragedy where 300+ people died, almost all of them high school kids on a field trip. It's so dear to South Koreans that it's still on the charts in SK like 7 years later. People call it BTS' queen song. If you're going to do it though it's truly important to do an explanation video along with it. The one by Italian Army is the favorite. Leave the subs off if you do that one, they're integrated. I always say that they are so amazing live, one of the best out there. . I really think you will like Hip Hop Lover, as this is who the rap line studied and were inspired by. It’s all 7 but mostly the rap line. I can’t wait to you get into the Cyphers and Outro:Tear. The vocal line is amazing as well, with House of Cards, The Truth Untold, and Zero O’Clock beautifully performed. The way Yoongi said he still write lyrics in his yellow pad until now & that his merch he released a while back is a note pad with a holder is such on brand to who he is.. you can see it in his Road to D-DAY Documentary. And you are correct with Namjoon, when he debuted he is always wearing sunglasses & his hairstyle is always changing, hence his line, coz he was always getting hated on for it.. hope you also check out their latest performance of Born Singer in Proof Live 2022 even in your own time. you’ll see the growth in their vocals.. you’ll def love the vocal line as well, they are no joke..
