The big thing that bookish theories missed in the explanation was that bts dedicated this song to the working class, our modern day heroes. All of their stage performance outfits for this song represent some kind of job, like the utility wear they wore in the live performance you watched. The first performance was dedicated to frontline workers during the pandemic. I don't think the song is as much about them as bookish theories explained it to be. The song is about modern day heroes, but bts obviously used their own experiences and emotions to help write the lyrics, as they often do.
@ScarDragon
@ScarDragon 2 года назад
Just a note about Bookish Theories...she relates her explained videos to books so her comments are generated from their reference to the manga/anime, not about other aspects of the song's lyrics. I think she does a good job of explaining what Anpanman stands for based off of its original intention (the book). I watch 2-3 explained videos per song (such as DKDKTV and xceleste) because you won't really get a complete sense of BTS's meanings by just watching one theorist's POV since they all bring something different to the explanation such as pop culture references, Korean culture, and psychological references, etc.

Also the first live performance was for The Today Show. Since it’s an old song, we believe they performed it during the pandemic as a tribute to front line workers, who are our modern day Anpanman. Giving so much of themselves to keep everyone safe. They have a loooot of songs with deep meanings, masked by a catchy tune. One of the many reasons why we love BTS, you get to discover and appreciate the music twice - once for the music, because they make bops, no skips, then again for the depth of the lyrics.

The finger gesture that you made is called a finger heart. It is a trend popularized in south korea in the 2010s. It's a well-known symbol among Korean pop stars and their fans. Singers and actors will flash their crossed thumb and forefinger during concerts and shows - a symbol to show their love to the fans.

A couple things to point out: The first video you watched was from Today's concert series, which they usually hold in Central Park with an audience. During the pandemic BTS did a lot of performances, but all were pre recorded on sets. Now when you look at the second performance video where they were performing infront of an audience you can tell that their energy is different. They really do feed off the crowd. BTS always put on great performances but during the pandemic, as a viewer, ARMYs presence was really missed. Second thing I wanted to point out was in the second performances you watched. The backdrop was comic book inspired but their outfits were inspired from first responder uniforms. I think it was a nice touch for them include real life heros in their performance as well.

Also the fans singing some parts of the song is called fanchants And yes BTS songs have deep meanings that's what draw the fans to them there are hundreds of groups that can sing and dance but not all of them have meaningful lyrics that can resonate with people. The singing from the crowd is very common in k-pop. It's called a fanchant where the crowd sings with the artists at specific parts. Sometimes it also includes chanting the members names ( which has a specific order) during the instrumental sections.

In Kpop, most of the Idol songs have fanchants, they really incorporate the fan especially during live performance, sometimes they even release in what parts of the songs should the fanchants be. You'll notice in other live performances that ARMYs chant the members name, either at the beginning or during the instrumental parts of their song. BTS chant order is Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, Jeon Jungkook, BTS!

Joke's on you, Anpanman is pretty deep, too. 😂 BTS relates to Anpanman bc as they say in the song, how they help people is by giving a piece of themselves to others by exposing their vulnerability. Every song, every performance, the loneliness and the bruises they get along the way to offer that to the public are the pieces of themselves they give up. ALSO, just as Anpanman can't carry anyone to safety but instead gives people motivation to save themselves (a lyrics says "I will be your strength"), BTS can't directly rescue you from your problems in life. The best they can do is to give you that piece of themselves and hope that you gain the strength to rise above your situation. 💜

This song performed live and also in concert has so much energy. One of my favorite things about BTS's music and perfornance is their sincerity, how they really put themselves and their feelings into their songs and their songs for ARMY could be considered 'cheesy' or overly sentimental if you don't understand the bond and mutual love and respect between the two. Few artists really express it as much as BTS does, they know there are moments when they give strength and hope to ARMY with their music. Their choice to be a positive force in the world is to be admired in a world where a lot of artists are all about ego, money and they don't acknowledge or appreciate their fans. Breath of fresh air!

Fun fact about the fanchants! BigHit used to organize them and would disseminate it to ARMY. However, they haven’t really been doing it lately. So, ARMY being the organized fandom we are, have some sources from the K-ARMY that come up with the fanchants themselves and upload them to yt. The rest of us disseminate it to other ARMYs through twitter, instagram, weverse, etc. I’d also like to mention that in preparation for the PTD LA concerts, a bunch of ARMYs organized fan chant practices which was honestly the cutest thing ever. People gathered on Zoom or other platforms to practice for the newer songs like Butter and others 😭🥺 I love this fandom so much 😭

I saw the timeline on Twitter when older armys (as in those who have been in the fandom longer) where helping new armys learn...it was really sweet to see! I think it's also funny that armys, mostly i-armys, tend to add a little bit extra to the official fanchant like in Fake Love during Namjoon's "Why you sad? I don't know 난 몰라 (nan molla)"....when technically the official fanchant is only "Why you sad?". Us US armys shout the whole thing with our chests 🤣 And HYBE/BH still does put out the fanchants on Weverse announcements and/or fancafe on Daum (I'll link the most recent ones for reference) it's just been a while since BTS released a full album like BE or MOTS7; can't wait to see what they have in store next tho. Another great BTSxARMY resource is US BTS ARMY. This collective has a lot of good info on it (www.usbtsarmy.com/fanchants) 💜 Fanchants for: Life Goes On: www.weverse.io/bts/notices/642 Dynamite: www.weverse.io/bts/notices/447 Butter: www.weverse.io/bts/notices/1022 Permission To Dance: weverse.io/bts/notices/1265

Since you guys haven't seen many recordings of live performances in front of fans so far, wanted to just share with you the culture of fanchants. Almost every song has one (except probably the ballads), and they're sometimes pre-decided by the company how they go (some groups have videos of fanchants for certain title tracks). Along with lightsticks, during concerts and live shows fans will do fanchants during the song. The fanchant will usually include echoing some of the catchier lines of the song, as well as at least one portion where the fans list of out all of the members' names. It's quite a charming thing to do I think, because it's encouraging for the members on stage, but also lets the audience feel involved in the performance. Please react to the live performance of Go Go!! The studio version as well, but i'd specifically love either the live version at MBC Music Festival 2017, or even just the Halloween dance practice!! this is a song that you'll need to hear an explanation for, and I bet you'll love all its meaning.

It's called the Citi series because that's the advertiser who sponsored it. It was a Good Morning America performance. During 2020-21, BTS recorded a number of live (one take) performances to promote their different releases and to participate in worldwide activities. Their "Dear Class of 2020" performance was especially cool to me. All of those pre-recorded performances could easily be mistaken for music videos.

Certain words or lyrics of a song that the crowd sing/chant with the group. There's also the 'Name' Fanchant. That were they call out each member(full name) starting with leader, then oldest to youngest. “Kim Namjoon! Kim Seokjin! Min Yoongi! Jung Hoseok! Park Jimin! Kim Taehyung! Jeon Jungkook! BTS!” Still hoping you're gonna do the 'Explained by a Korean' for 'Baepsae', 'Idol' and 'Daechwita'

I really like this format, where you watch the mv (if there is one), an explanation (if needed) and a live, at least you have it all covered. Moreover, for this song, know that they sang it at MAMA 2018, it was an award show that was transformed in the space of a few minutes in concert, let me explain; when I say all, it really is all, the lights were all Armys bombs, the room was filled with Armys, which made an ocean of Army Bombs, it's awesome to see. Usually, during awards shows, fans are grouped together by fandoms, so usually there is really only part of the audience that comes alive when their idols go on stage. But there it was the whole audience, which forced MAMA, for the following year to ban fandom light sticks, so that there is no black ocean. A black ocean is when all the lights, including the fans themselves, are turned off, in general it's very humiliating because no one then supports the idols who are on the stage, it's already happening because of fanwars or fandoms angry with their own idols, it is a kind of punishment. Anyway, you have to see the BTS live to understand it, I hope you give it a try, this is Anpaman's live at MAMA 2018, and remember : it's supposed to be an award show.

Crossing your thumb and your pointer finger makes a heart! I also think Anpanman is the kind of superhero that, while not strong himself, gives you the strength to help yourself. Anpanman is also considered the 'weakest superhero'... Also, the outfits from the live at the end represent everyday people (firefighters, construction workers, random people on the street, etc... at least thats what I think. I love the stage performances of this song, because their outfits are often of the modern day heroes that most people never consider, but who make your life better. The construction worker, garbage man, police officer, first responder, and health care professionals have all been represented. This song is so special because it represents the idea that everyone can be a hero - even if it is just to one person. It lets people know that they can make a difference and that is heroism at it's finest.

If you notice in the live performance at the end they are wearing clothing very similar to what you see laborers/construction workers/road crews wearing. It is a call out that people doing the regular jobs that keep society moving are really unsung heroes of everyday life. When the song first came out there was a flurry of posts on Korean social media about the fathers of ARMY hearing the song and crying because it perfectly encapsulated for them why they worked to support their families. It was sweet. Also, BTS is notorious for doing social commentary songs or songs with a deeper meaning masked by incongruous music or choreography. Critique of society =body roll= Mental Health awareness =hip thrust= emotional deep confession =bright cheerful dance music=

Ohhhh heeeeyyyy I'm so glad your Anpanman reaction was able to get through! Anpanman had been one of my all-time fav. When it first came out I was literally hooked on the choreo on the chorus and learnt it! I'm glad you enjoyed the song :) The finger gesture is called "finger hearts". It's basically another form of making a heart sign, I think originated or popularised in s.korea as seen in performances and k-dramas. In music shows, synchronised fan chanting is called "fanchant". It's part of lyrics or added chants the fans chant to cheer and support the artists' performance. It's uncommon among western fandoms, but is common among Korean artists' fandoms. Also p/s: I really enjoyed joining your live yesterday! I joined youtube and IG (I actually joined on video live :D) Yguys must've been exhausted tho, speaking with/to an audience for a whole 3 hours would be exhausting for anyone. I know some ppl can get carried away for quite a lengthy convo, and also since some ppl joined late, recurring questions happen. so might I suggest for your next live: 1. Pre-prepared questions. Open a Q&A board maybe a day before the live, and pick out most asked questions 2. Tentative time limit: maybe an hr? On each platform max? Sthg that won't tire u out, bc I think holding a 3hour live must've been exhausting. But other than that, I enjoyed talking with yguys on your live. We're so used to interacting in comments, having a face-to-face convo felt..idk, like "humanising" for you and me. It's a point when we realise we're not judt account interacting but real human being, hanging out exploring music :)

I think children are impressed with the courage of Anpanman, shocked that he would literally give himself to help those who are suffering, even when he seems small just like them. He has many friends, too, and he’s a good kid, the way they want to be. I was impressed that BTS would dare sing and dance Anpanman, when Anpanman is nothing that’s idol cool. They show they’re not above or below anyone, want to connect to a whole range of audience, not afraid to cross all borders of culture and genre and media. BTS is not afraid to take chances or be unexpected, they find the message beyond stereotypes and lead the way to show that what they wear is the new cool because they’re just cool🤷🏻‍♀️

What a treat! A Longer reaction video! The finger/thumb expression is a heart ; similar to the heart some make with their hands. So it's an expression of love. BTS often does this in their live shows/performances to show their love for ARMY.

I absolutely love the meaning of this song!!! Another interpretation that I also like is that we all can be superhero’s in our own lives…Their are many people around us and as we can help them or just being ourselves we can change someone’s life…In the last performance (I could be wrong, it might a different performance) I believe all the members are wearing different types of careers clothes, saying that a janitor, or electrician, or doctor, teacher, etc. can be a source of good in people’s lives!!! Just like musicians/artists can be a source of good, like BTS!!! Normal people can help everyone around each other making us Super hero’s. Anyways sorry for rambling. Very few BTS don’t have a meaning behind them. Sometimes the songs connect or albums to create a theme or story that gives a message… if you are interested I recommend reacting to BTS Crash Course 2020 by Suga and Spice (it is a little out of date due to it being made in 2020 but it does do a really good job at summarizing what BTS albums are about.

idk if anyones answered already yet, but youre right! The sign is a "finger heart", you make it by pressing the tip of your pointer finger together with the tip of your thumb. Also, the crowd in the live version is doing a fan chant. It's an official song follow-along chant for fans to follow, and every group will usually have one for every song (sometimes, fans even make their own up). Lots of fans will memorize these to show their support as the groups sing the songs!

Gotta love the finger hearts! That is what you were asking about with the hard gesture. And the fans screaming during parts of the song are "Fan Chant" moments. In some live concert videos you will also hear fans screaming the members names in this order... "Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, Jung Jungkook, BTS!!!" Pull up a live version of Boy With Luv and you'll hear fans yelling it at the very beginning.

Yes, it is a finger heart and it is usually done by crossing the index and thumb at the first knuckle. I love how in the choreography of the live performance you see RM go over to Jimin who is on the ground and mime offering him a piece of his anpan (the filled bun head of the character) and Jimin mimes eating it and is then able to get back up to sing and dance.

This song has become even more meaningful to me, especially at the peak of the pandemic. Being a healthcare worker, truly I consider myself and every healthcare worker the new generation Anpanman, so this song is quite special-we might not hold the true powers of a superhero but we definitely worked hard to be this new generation's heroes.

My favorite thing from the Anpanman choreo is that at the beginning, when V's hoodie is shaking in the wind like he's flying through the sky? That's Jungkook literally crouching behind him shaking his hoodie XD

Actually what you are hearing from the audience is called the "fanchant" and it exists for every song,where the fans yell particular words from the song. Also there is a fanchant with their names in order that you can hear in the beggining or in some specific parts of the song. And that gesture with the thumb and the point finger is called "finger heart",you can see it very often in the korean culture. Thank you for this great reaction and for appreciating our boys. It's nice to see how you are slowly turning into their fans :D I'm looking forward to see more of your videos^^

Aww yes those are finger hearts! And for live performances we get to hear the fan chants, so there are like official and unofficial fan chants for the songs so that the audience is also participating in the performance 💜

In 14:04 you mentioned the crowd.. Have you noticed that in certain parts you hear the audeience singing along or chanting certain parts? For most of their songs, there are coordinated fanchants for specific parts. Army sings along on those parts. It's even more amazing in their concerts. Hearing the crowd and hearing army as one is just a memorable experience!

So happy that your Anpanman reaction is finally out. Unlike the two of you, i got into BTS not through their music but through their chaotic RUN episodes and fan-made compilation videos of the same. Their music came much later to me and boy, after listening to Anpanman and learning about the layers of meaning in the lyrics, my respect for BTS grew immensely. And the finger-heart thing, you made me laugh in a good way

The sign with the fingers is a heart. But what's most important it's 2 in 1. If you look only on fingers you will see heart like in cartoon, but the whole hand with this sign is a full human heart with aorta and etc. Just check it!

The hand gesture is what we call finger hearts. It mimics a tiny heart made from the tips of the fingers, but if you turn it sideways it mimics the shape of an actual heart with the fingers as the arteries and veins. Most people just look at the tiny mini heart that the fingers make.
@rachelsaunders7746

Also, you heard the audience screaming along with the song. That was the fan chant. Every song has a very specific fanchant that goes along with it. Anpanman has one of the more distinct ones, along with Fake Love, and Cypher pt 4. The audience learns the chant and then it acts a bit like a call and echo during the live performances.

Seriously one of my top 5 songs. If you see me screaming this in the car next to you on I-270, just look away. Or do the universal "I like kpop music too" hand symbol... the finger heart you're asking bout! And for the record, the others are Telepathy, Spring Day, Pied Piper, & Butter. So you've almost done all of them~

The first song I listened to and the reason I got into BTS was Dynamite. But Anpanman was the first Korean song I had a connection with, so I decided to listen to the other songs and I realised I wanted to become ARMY. It is not just the melody, but the lyrics and the way they convey their nusic. Amazing.

Love the longer video format. Sometimes it’s hard to grasp lyrics (on a single run through) when the MV is so visually overwhelming...and watching their live performances is different yet again. So there’s something really special about seeing people explore BTS songs and get a deeper appreciation for them. Really enjoying your journey 👍
