Great work, thank you for doing this. Everyone talks about the gear, but they forget that how you handle a set is just as important. I really like that last tip about the snapshots. Also its kind of refreshing to see that you didn't use a gimbal or a ton of movement but shot this more traditionally. That being said I think it could have benefited from a tad more movement.

Hey Caleb - Thanks for the feedback. I did have a slider on set but I was concerned that with such a small crew and so many shots we wouldn't make our day if we added a slider to every shot. You're probably right that it would have added something.

I post some graded snapshots for my cast and crew on my last shoot, for the same reasons that you mentioned here. It's a small thing to do and takes but a moment to sort out, everyone was happy to see what they'd accomplished. Love that the C200 footage is really nice to grade too.

Crimson Engine I’ve not been able to shoot RAW yet (not my own C200 I’m using and don’t have the cf cards for the workflow) but when I do I’ll be getting your LUTs. I’ll also be looking at getting the Shape rig too thanks to your video on it.

Final product looks good, however you can see part of your light panel in the top left corner of the shot where she first walks into the kitchen. You can mask that out pretty easily.

Man that was a great BTS of your TVC process from the ground up...informative, expressive, & some great knowledge shared. .I shoot short-form social media video content & work along a similar process but it's a little more rugged /run&gun style but every now & then I engage in a project that's needs more refinement & it's so great to see how other professionals get their business done. I'd recommend getting the release forms signed at the start of the day not the end. Wasnt keen on the clinical feel and the grade. Skin seems harshly lit and pasty. I realise it was a showroom but it was lit like a showroom. But perhaps the client made you do that.

Yes, the video was valuable, but in the commercial itself: lighting, framing composition, pacing, editing, music, were off. Also we don’t understand what is the commercial for. But we cannot know how much it is the choice from the client.

This is amazing I like the color temperature and grading is awesome nice. I think many cinematographers rush into shooting before planning and sketching their script but nice tip on storyboard sir and would love to see some More flash detailing shots and some slow motion cut-in shots next time but again that depends on the duration you working with. Otherwise am encouraged and impressed.

the light and grading in your own content is so much interesting than the final commercial. I love how catching is your personal work vs the flatness of the commercial. I am a creative director and I know there are clients involved, but i`m sure you could do a much more better atmosphere if you fight a bit more! Cheers!

Thanks for sharing this! This BTS is super interesting and explains a great deal. As an architect, you did a great job getting the office/showroom to become a stylish kitchen in a high rise. Except.... for the exit sign in the hallway as the wife comes in the door. Yes, apartment buildings have exit signs in their corridors, but that ceiling screams "office building" not "condo/apartment building" and just erasing that exit sign would go a long way to not "triggering" that in the viewer. We're paying attention to the beautiful actress, and the green sign pulls focus away to say "something's not right." But... if the client is happy with it, no need to mess anything up! Also, it's not my field, so there's a ton I don't know about releases, but wouldn't it be ideal to have them sign the release as part of accepting/committing to the project. "Yes, I'll be there on this day, for this rate, and here's your release signed for the shoot/project." I didn't expect that it would be done at the end of shooting. Some legal reason?

i wish you went into those minuet little details , alot of directors and film makers dont like to talke about like , how much did you pay the actors, how much did it cost to rent out the space, your day rate etc.

I would love to, but the reason that people don't talk about this is that its sensitive information. I can't disclose that without the permission of the client and the actors. The space was the clients office, so that was free. If you want to see how much locations cost, check out peerspace.

Thanks for sharing this. I recently discovered your youtube channel, and enjoy your content a lot. I'd love to see more BTS videos showing the details of how shoots are run, lit, directed, etc. The internet is flooded with gear reviews, but the real magic happens on set and shooters need to know the practical workflow of life on set. Seeing how crews deal with the challenges on set (location, audio, lighting, etc.) is always informative to watch. BTW, it would be cool to see more of you work. Have any links you'd care to share?

Everyone seems to want to do feature films, but I'd like to know how to break into good commercials work. Shorter production time than features, but high production value and decent budgets look like a good way to make a living.

No client has ever asked for 4k, including a major hollywood studio I've done work for. I think its mainly to sell TVs :)

@@Crimsonengine interesting, will you also touch on aspect ratios , dont know if you did but ive heard that working in a 16x9 timeline when your trying to deliver to a theater and most people put the fake bars on the top of the video to make it look wide screen tend to make the video look like a rectangle in the theater, most should be working on a 21:1 scale or something , have you had to deal with this?

got a couple of questions for you: 1.- if you just had a 120D Mkii with a light Dome, What would you get as your 2nd Light for documentary interviews and corporate work Budjet $1200 . ??? 2.- in 2020 would you still go for an APS-C or would you go for full frame in other words FX9 or C300Mkiii ???

I noticed most of the shots were on a tripod or slider. If you were asked to do a tracking shot or something with motion, what would be your go to tool or stabilizer using the c200?

Probably a Ronin M or the Movi5. I tried a couple of the smaller one handed gimbals and found them tough to use.

Man, I've been binge watching your show since i found it last week, I wonder if you have thought about doing a critique and/or practical advice show. So far as i know Film Riot is the only other show that does that. It could be really helpful, even for those of us that are really really REALLY green. Plus it might be away to pump out content without really having to generate new topics of your own...not that I hate that, Just a thought.
