♦️Jimin wrote the lyrics not only by himself, but was the only one to send his very first draft to the producers, and it was approved, so no need for a rewrite! The lie is the lie he keeps telling himself. Always in the past aiming for perfection and by doing so always questioning and second guessing himself! Although deep inside he knows better! The other lie is telling himself as well as everyone else that everything is alright when it's not!! Jimin has grown and changed, along with the other members since then. All learning to love themselves for who & what they are flaws and all! Jimin is now able to, as his song Promise says, shine the light on himself, as well, speaking up more when things bother him and allowing himself to laugh off whenever he makes any kind of mistake, knowing now he can always perfect or improve on whatever is lacking next time!!

I definitely think Wings was the bridge between “old school BTS” when they were just kids and trying to figure out who they were and “new school” where they’ve blossomed into these incredible men that are much more confident and comfortable with themselves. One of the greatest albums in the history of pop music in my opinion.

What I will say tho, is that Jimin's voice is naturally high so the vocal tones and pitches he hits in both his own songs and in group and unit songs are in his natural range. I know exactly what Lo means, but singing outside of your "range" won't damage your voice if you sing correctly. I'm personally a natural alto, but in choirs, I sing as a Soprano 1. This is because I've been classically trained as a Soprano, so while my natural voice is an alto, I can hit those higher notes with ease due to how I've trained my vocal cords. Jimin has also received vocal training, which is why if you compare his high notes from older group songs to his high notes now, there's an ease to his voice that wasn't there before. They also all choose their own parts so any notes that jimin hits, he chose. But I love the fact that Lo actually knows wtf he's talking about and cares about Jimin's vocal folds. Jimin's voice is super interesting tho, because even when he was straining more in songs, he still hit the notes with a clear tone. I also think that because he has a naturally rasp to his vocal tone, he can get away with more tones. Jimin does hit more raspy notes, growls, and uses his lower register in their earlier works as well as in some of there more recent music, but he does seem to stay in the pocket of higher pitches.

Jimin doesn't have the least flexibility in his voice. It's just that he's required to do the high notes because no one of the other members can go as high as him so he's rarely able to use his lower register.

Jimin wrote this. The lie is what his insecure self tells him about himself. It’s his struggle to break free from his insecurities the negative messages. It was suppose to be a really dark song. Thank goodness I think RM moved him away from that. His pitch is naturally high. He opens his mouth and high notes come out. He is not ruining his voice, I appreciate Lowe caring. Jimin has more control over his vocal cords and he emits notes that most men can’t. I think V who has the widest range- has to be more careful when he sings falsetto. But you hear Jimin easily transition from head to chest voice and use a mixture. In the beginning, since he did not receive vocal training it was hard on his throat for some high notes. The truth untold-there is a concert and he’s ill, but he still tries to perform. Well, the pain became so bad, he was in tears on stage. The crowd sang his part of the song. It was beautiful and sad. He’s not that Jimin anymore. He has vocal control. He’s not damaging his chords. There are about Five coaches who react and none have Indicated he is ruining his voice. They are all in awe and stop to find the key he is singing. I am so proud of Lowe, thinking of Jiminahh. Those high notes in the early days, ended up saving BTS in a way. They stood out. Jimin went from being undervalued, and kind of dismissed to essential, very necessary. RM even says to him once, thank you Jimin without you we would not have come this far. He has been voted the number idol for a couple of years. Number one dancer three years in row. Number one in brand confidence. Jimin's higher register is the most suited for BTS songs, as Jungkook and Tae (apart from the rappers) fill the lower registers quite well, and it is his signature sound. Jimin I'd say is a pure tenor, is range is probs between E4 and C#5 ??? probs can go a bit higher? His lower range tends to be throaty. Jimin wrote the lyrics himself, and helped with production, his first draft was approved immediately. The song is about the lies he tells himself, how he would tell himself he did bad and how he would punish himself over mistakes no one else noticed, his obsession with perfection. It's a song Jimin actually doesn't like, he wrote Promise, years later, as an answer in a way for Lie. A promise to take care of himself and be easy on himself. Also, the song is in minor, but "caught in a lie" is in a Picardy Third, the happiest sound perse, basically pretending to be happy while one is sad.

Jimin has great voice it's like an untamed horse with lot of potential.. Due to this he faced lots of problem initially to understand his voice... I've been resonating with this song for the past 3 years and it hasn't been getting better. It's something I struggle with everyday because it's how I've been raised. The only difference that was made was that I finally realized the problem, the "lie" and I'm still to this day trying to fix myself and remove the lie that I've been so used to living with. It's honestly a painful and scary journey to be in. But it's different for everyone including Jimin. Everyone struggle differently with the lie they house themselves in.

I love this song for so many reasons but musically, when it switches to a major - after starting and living in minor - is so shocking and magical.

It's a song about lying to yourself... Negative self-talk, being hyper critical, self-hatred, confusion, not seeing yourself clearly or kindly... The lyrics are open enough to interpretation to be able to relate to it in different and personal ways, but that's the core feeling.

I love what he said about this era being when Jimin came into his own becuase honestly as someone who became a fan during the era before Wings, that is the perfect thing to say about him. As you start from the present of whatever time you discovered them and go back it almost feel as who Jimin was trying to personify to fit BTS concepts was not really comfortable for him and not trying to say he was being fake or not being hisself because I don’t know Jimin personally but the Wings era he brought this sensuality and confidence that people NOTICED!!!! when this era began, and ever since then that version of him never left. And it was really in the Wings era where ‘The Jimin Effect’ (though it has always been there since debut), really took off. You noticed the confidence even when people were checking him out on the street and it was a Jimin that we hadn’t (well I hadn’t as the wave of Army’s who came in during the Run/INU/YF era) seen before.

You’re right Curt, temptation is part of the concept of the whole Wings album from which Lie is taken. Its based on Herman Hesse’s novel Demian which tells a story about a young boy’s journey to self-realization, and finds himself caught up between temptation of the flesh and religious redemption. It revolves around dealing with two opposing forces within him: the good and the bad, the truth and the lie, which Jimin sings about in this track. It’s like an inner fight between his two sides. There’s so much to unpack and the context can be better understood if you know how the Bangtan Universe fictional storyline goes or at least the novel Demian. Also the orchestra part in the beginning gives off the vibe of a conflicted mind which Jimin seems to be having in the song.

After that era in a documentary jimin said his old self wasn't himself he used to pretend to be strong and mainly but that's not him and now he is comfortable in his skin he isn't pretending to be someone who isn't him and he cried after that

I don’t think jimin sings out of his natural style most of the time. I think people have an idea of where his voice lies but him in Jin kind of go in the same range (tho Jin can go lower) but I think it’s a little stretch to be like most songs are out of his range. Jimin did in fact have a back ground in hip hop(not vocally but dance wise he did dance hip hop

I agree with all the vocal ranging discussion except for Jins. Jin has the perfect voice for Ballad in my opinion, out of all the members- he does ballads the best. Like The Truth Untold and Epiphany. Its just that there isnt a lot a lot of ballads in his solo discography. V is perfect for neosoul rnb, Jimin and Jungkook both have range but their voice is versatile so they can make a lot of the songs they sing sound good by simply sticking to the appropriate range. I agree with both comments in this video....technically, Jimin doesn't have the strongest voice in the group but emotionally...his voice hits you hard and deep in the emotions. And for me...that's way more important. As someone who grew up around Black gospel singers who can sing a song so well it will bring you to your knees on a Sunday morning...and NONE of them would be considered technically perfect singers, I am quite comfortable saying that I much prefer a singer who can take me to place like that than one who can do perfect scales. By no means am I saying Jimin sounds like a gospel singer...I'm saying he can create the same level and type of emotion with his singing and his delivery AND he can transfer that energy to the people watching him. THAT is much harder to do than singing a perfect note.

jimin's most comfortable range to sing in is his higher range. it tends to be at least 3 keys higher than what's let's say v is comfy in or with jk. he has a light and bright voice so i don't quite agree with the "singing out of his range" thing. like he said in the making of the BE album.it's rather more stressful to him to sing in a lower key than his higher part. wish we can get a tad bit of his lower range more thoo and jimin was always quite popular in his early days but it was stressful for him bcs he wasn't all that comfortable with showing too much skin as he was a minor at the time. i'm glad he grew and became more confident and not trying to please anyone but doing his own thing

I know I am watching this months after your reaction discussion but I want to add my thoughts. I agree with you. Jimin did not meet the Korean beauty standards. The company decided that he was to present as a macho, brash guy with muscles. In the early days, he always had to show his musceled arms and he was the only one that was told to show his abs ( this was discussed in their 1st Festa anniversary of their debut). This prescribed " character" was far from his nature. In another video, his extensive martial arts training from his early grade school days. These practices require focus, discipline as well as strength. He has an IQ of 128 and was class president...in short not a brash bully boy. The company kept after him to be "manly" since he did not meet their beauty standards. Various videos show the members describing Jimin as the member that they would go to to listen to their problems which also does not conform with the bully boy image. Another early video show a clip of BTS on a Korean variety show where the hosts said that since Jimin had been a Comtemporary dance student, they wanted him to show them a dance move. He did this and the BTS members registered surprise. RM said that he had known Jimin for 3 years and they never saw him dance like that. I take this to mean that he had to hide his talent. This was a period where he went on crazy diets and worked out a lot to meet the company's expectations. As BTS moved from being primarily a rap hip hop to this interesting mix of styles, he was allowed to present is real self. A video of the members watching the Lie performance has RM saying something like --when did Jimin grow up...he is not a baby anymore. I wonder if this performance helped the other members see him in a new light. There is a video where the members were gathered and Suga says that his friends told him that Jimin as "it" something he did not understand at first but the all the members had to conclude that they had begun to see that too. I hesitate to send this because I realize that I may be a tad obsessed with BTS...oh well ..I am going to hit send. I did not proof read sorry in advance

I love this song! It’s one of my favorites by Jimin. Jimin had a really tough time during his trainee days and he blamed himself a lot for his shortcomings especially vocally and this song came out of this inner battle within himself. His vocals on this song are breathtaking and draws you in!!!

For me BTS as much in solos as in group are the most coherent artists in their work where all the elements of a same creation are coherent namely the composition, the lyrics, the visual, the performance, the choreography and the identity of the interpreter. It is enormous the mass of work that there is behind, nothing is made at random. Some may say "I would have preferred another dance or another title track"... Yes but the most important thing for BTS is the coherence with the message transmitted and for me this is the mark of the greatest. Here is what you need to know about "LIE" even if this song as well as other BTS solos contain unspoken secrets which can give them multiple meanings, including the one I bring you but which has been the most reported within the community. “LIE” - written and composed by Jimin, Hitman Bang, PDogg, Docskim and Sumin - is the solo song for Jimin from their album ‘Wings’. This is like a continuation from the solo intro song, ‘Boy Meets Evil’ by J-Hope. He has fallen into temptation, into the lie of the sweetness of evil and he wants to get out. However, he can’t and is trapped. He wants somebody to save him, to take him back to when he was pure. Some people see the lie as his struggle to please all of his fans with his appearance and his unhealthy extreme dieting and muscle gain, to please “fans”. However it was never confirmed so this is just speculation. It has Jimin’s amazing vocals and choreography in the live performance that shows how seductive and tempting the lie was and how he is struggling to break free.This song like the entirety of Wings has multiple meanings. When he says “Tell me like you’re whispering in my ear”, it’s followed up with, “I want to get away.” The whispering in his ears can be interpreted in different ways, one of those being his self-conscious side urging him to continuously lose. He always battles with his mind about his image. The sweet smile makes it seem welcoming, and Jimin had gradually fallen into the temptation of his weight loss. GET AWAY AWAY AWAY FROM ME GET AWAY AWAY FROM ME I have interpreted Jimin’s lyrics in an own way of mine. I believe “Lie” could be talking about repressed sexuality. These lines could be interpreted as Jimin telling the feelings other than heterosexuality to leave him alone as they aren’t the “right” thing. WHOEVER IT MAY BE, SAVE ME, ME Again Jimin saying whoever it is or whatever it is to save him from the feelings of something ether than heterosexuality IT CONTINUES EVEN WHEN I RUN AWAY This song is in compound metre (meaning each beat in the measure divides naturally into a triple pulse; you can hear this most clearly in the beginning right when the guitar first comes in). That metre creates an almost-cyclical feel to the song, as though it will go on forever. (Although not in this line, that feeling is further exemplified when the song abruptly cuts off at the end.) In this line, and throughout the rest of the song, Jimin addresses the feeling that the lie he’s caught in is never-ending, it continues no matter what he tries to do to escape it. This is so perfectly demonstrated by the metre of this song, it is a phenomenal example of word painting. I AM CAUGHT IN A LIE Also referring to the line above Jimin could be hinting at the fact that he still feels something other than heterosexuality even when he does try to hide those feelings or run away them. These feelings are something he can not escape from. He is caught in a lie, a lie between who he is and what people think he is. CAUGHT IN A LIE With this line the song suddenly transitions from a minor key to a major key in a rather jarring and unsettling way (not a criticism in any way, I love this song). Again, the word painting is wonderful, because the major key is a lie itself, because it strays from the minor of the rest of this song. This may just be to emphasize the idea of the lie, but I think that it is even further implying that the happiness expressed by the major key 𝘪𝘴 the lie. In this song, Jimin’s going through something devastating, painful, and almost unbearable, but in his life (perhaps further exacerbated by the fact that he’s an idol) he is forced to put on a mask of happiness, and act like everything’s ok, even when it’s not. The major key in the minor song represents that positive persona that he puts forward to the world, which is the lie. FIND ME WHEN I WAS PURE I CAN’T BE FREE FROM THIS LIE GIVE ME BACK MY SMILE In the line, “Find me when I was pure” Jimin could be referring to heterosexuality as being “pure”. He no longer has these feelings of heterosexuality that is why he has the need of finding his old self, his “pure” self, the self that was heterosexual. In the line, “I can’t be free from this lie” he talks about how, as much as he tries, he can’t hide from his true self and can not avoid his true sexuality. So, he could actually be referring to “this lie” as the truth, he just can’t avoid the feelings he has so he wants to believe it is a lie, when it is actually the truth. And in the line “Give me back my smile” Jimin talks about being restored into his old self. The self that didn’t have to hide his feelings, the self that could be happy and smile. He wants to go back to heterosexuality because he believes it’s a lie. PULL ME FROM THIS HELL I CAN’T BE FREE FROM THIS PAIN In the line “Pull me from this hell” Jimin refers to “hell” as the feeling of being uncertain or unsure. He does not want to accept the feelings of something other than heterosexuality and he doesn’t want to accept them. However, he can’t deny or avoid them. He is stuck in between and it is “hell” for him. In the line “I can’t be free from this pain” the “pain” Jimin is talking about is again the feeling of something other than heterosexuality and him being unable to accept it and be open about it. SAVE ME, I AM BEING PUNISHED In Demian the inspiration for this album, Sinclaire lies about his bad doings to impress a group of boys saying he stole apples from a local orchard. One character named Krome then uses this lie to blackmail Sinclaire into actually committing crimes. So here, Jimin could be acting as Sinclaire asking to be saved for being punished even though he didn’t actually do something bad- besides the lie. AN OVERGROWN LIE IS TRYING TO SWALLOW ME WHOLE The Wings album is based on Demian, by Hermann Hesse. In the autobiography, the main character gets “caught in a lie” where he gets involved with the devil. FIND ME WHEN I WAS PURE I CAN’T BE FREE FROM THIS LIE GIVE ME BACK MY SMILE This refers to the theory that the lie got so big, it became a hole of lies that he couldn’t escape. Keeping up with the lie became so hard, and it stole his happiness and smile. He became impure when he invoked the lie, and he regrets it. The lie just makes him unhappy and stressed. He wants to run from it, but theirs no escape, thus him asking for the pure him that didn’t become impure with the lie.

Jimin struggled with self doubt as a young performer. When BTS was a hip hop group Jimin was encouraged to develop his muscles and growl his way through the songs with some amazing high notes but thankfully they changed direction and he was able to settle into his niche in the group. The muscles are back but Jimin is now able to put his powerful moves next to the delicate moves and be himself. Jimin had struggled to write songs but he really came through with this. I think he went to RM for help who is great at helping the others to realise their ideas. Jimin had done locking and popping before joining BTS but was happier with contemporary in which he excels. Jin had no experience of singing or dancing having been scouted off the street for his looks alone when he was at university studying acting.

I’d forgotten that I watched this 11 month ago; but the dude in the yellow ball cap really angered me watching this again! For one the dude dominated the entire discussion, so everyone else barely got a say - without him and interrupting; and secondly, he did so with a whole lot of not knowing what he’s talking about, he knows nothing about vocals and virtually everything he said was false, including his analogy of what ‘Lie’ is about! One only has to camp on YT for awhile to watch every vocal experts’ reactions to Jimin’s and they ALL say the complete opposite to this guy. His voice DOES 💯 LIVE in the upper register and NO he doesn’t strain his voice! (I already talked about this in my original comment). It’s also downright rude to sit there, on a reaction ABOUT JM, compare him to the other vocalists and rating him at the bottom. He has the most beautiful, angelic voice out of them all and he’s so unique in every aspect that artists like him only show up once in a generation!!!

I love this song and performance so much. There is one I would like to request, it's a song he wrote as a solo, and he took a very long time to write it. I don't know if you guys have already reacted to it. He uploaded it onto Sound Cloud as his solo project, and it wasn't released on an album, or have a music video. Nailed it. I appreciate the skill of singing, but the people with the best technique are almost never my favorite singers. Jk is definitely the strongest singer, that’s one of the reasons he’s the lead vocal, for sure. Agree that this is when Jimin seemed to start really coming into his own. Such a special song. Such a special artist/performer/person.

Jimin also said that he always felt like he had to act "manlier" and "stronger" during debut years, and during BST was when he really came into himself. So I don't think it's the dying his hair blond and dressing more flamboyant which distressed him, but freed him. Jimin is soft, he likes makeup and being cute, and nowadays he can just "be himself without pretending" (as Jimin himself said), he even cried while talking about it in an interview.
