Jimin wrote the most of the lyrics and also composed the melody for this song. The producer, I forgot their name, (Edit it's Dockism, their keyboardist lol. I totally blanked for a second :'D) has worked on other BTS songs as well such as "Outro: Tear" and they are a GENIUS! Literally every song they produce is pure gold :D

he is singing live indeed! there is a backing track too, it's difficult to sing live while dancing so he doesn't sing the hard parts as he has to dance too. you can actually make out when he pauses singing live and resumes again. all of the bts members sing live majority of the time!! lip syncing isn't their cup of tea :P

I love when I see musicians hear the modulations “lie” just like the lyrics read with the hook. You always do the thing right with dool set lyrics and musically this is easily one of my favorite songs as a previous choral performer and army. I WANT YOUR WIFES REACTION TO THIS. I love the lyrics too. The song is just a beautiful package.

♦️Jimin wrote the lyrics not only by himself, but was the only one to send his very first draft to the producers, and it was approved, so no need for a rewrite! The lie is the lie he keeps telling himself. Always in the past aiming for perfection and by doing so always questioning and second guessing himself! Although deep inside he knows better! The other lie is telling himself as well as everyone else that everything is alright when it's not!! Jimin has grown and changed, along with the other members since then. All learning to love themselves for who & what they are flaws and all! Jimin is now able to, as his song Promise says, shine the light on himself, as well, speaking up more when things bother him and allowing himself to laugh off whenever he makes any kind of mistake, knowing now he can always perfect or improve on whatever is lacking next time!!

In my opinion Jimin is one of the most talented singers, dancers, performers and composers EVER. Many have tried to cover Lie but no one has ever been close to Jimin's performance.. and I think that a huge reason is that it's a super personal song to him. The lyrics talk about his personal struggles (read the Note on Doolset's blog!) and the way they connect so perfectly with the melody of the song is mesmerizing (the music kinda "tells" what he's singing about). Every time, EVERY TIME! I listen to Lie I get CHILLS! One of my favorite songs ever. Also, Jimin's choreography for Lie (he danced BLINDFOLD!!)... he's unique. Everytime he goes into the chorus with "caught in a lie," it switches to major. It's like he's pretending to be happy and lying to himself about it. Music is crazy.

He was singing live along with a backtrack. Millions of concert attendees will testify to this. The parts he wasnt singing he just let the part run (no attempt to lipsynch).

Lie is still one of my fav songs to date, Jimin has a unique voice and the way the song was written is absolutely amazing. The feeling this song gives you is just .... the meaning behind it and the way he sings it gets me every time. He is singing live, they always sing live the backing track is there just as a support while he's doing the really hard parts. Jimin has a background in contemporary so yeah the choreo reflects the lyrics and the feeling of the song. More Jimin reactions? Yes, yes. I love your breakdowns because I have forgotten all the musical training and experience I ever had. Jimin has some very elaborate and difficult solo performances and he does sing while dancing. They all train very hard to be able to do that. Of course there's a backing track because so often they layer their own vocals. I'm not sure about the recording for this particular video but I have seen several different Lie performances. Bonus comment, this is not the only time he has danced blindfolded and certainly not the toughest choreography he has danced blindfolded. Amazing performance, as always. Jimin is a bit of a perfectionist. 💜

Lie is amazing definitely one of my favorites. Jimin’s live performances are literally art and gold. He’s an amazing performer. His vocals are top tier. He’s my all time favorite vocalist. His tone is unique. His voice is honey-like, comforting, healing, beautiful, and angelic. But his dancing is another level. That man is the best dancer I’ve ever seen. He’s such a versatile dancer. His dancing includes so many styles modern/contemporary, hip-hop, popping, ballet, korean dance and martial arts. What makes him unique and special is that he mixes them when dancing. He just has the most beautiful dance lines. His dancing is very artistic from head to toe. He carries and shows sm emotion in his dancing. No one can dance like him. Quote from Professionals “Jimin’s dance can’t be replicated. Jimin is like an art masterpiece that can’t be imitated.” As a dancer myself, I would luv to be able to be as good as him. He gave me the courage and inspiration to continue dancing instead of giving up.

Oh it was SO SATISFYING watching your facial expressions as you reacted to this hahaha. I'm SO HAPPY that you loved this song. It is honestly one of my favorite solo songs by them. It's just so unlike anything else I've heard in "pop" music and I can appreciate how amazing it is even when I know nothing about the music itself. I remember watching a video "Musicians react to BTS Lie" and seeing them all lose their collective minds over the music with the minor/major change and it made me appreciate the song on a whole other level. It's songs like this that I think of when BTS gets compared to Western boy bands. I was a huge preteen/teen fan of Backstreet Boys and NSYNC and I still will happily sing along to their songs when they are on the radio, but I have never heard them or any other group considered a boy band make a song like this. That's why so many of us are upset when media portray BTS incorrectly. Their song catalog is so diverse and it's really amazing to see them experiment with different styles, etc. I would honestly LOVE another song along these lines.

Lie is a masterpiece in every way I am also very critical of the music but this song is powerfully amazing it does not have any specific genre because it is a unique piece I have never heard anything similar and Jimin is my favorite singer of all time my Favorite artist, he really is on another level, I'm still in BTS because of him. Yes, he is both singing and dancing at the same time. He is a dancer. BTS performances are incredible because they dance and sing with live vocals. Check out their videos. They write quite a bit of their music and/or put in their input. All seven are amazingly talented. Jimin is incredible with this piece from the beginning to the ending of this piece.

This one and Serendipity are my favorite Jimin songs. Probably two of my favorite solo songs overall too. They both sound so cool.

What defines KPOP is it's more than the music, it's the dance, costume, perfomance ; the complete package. Jimin was a contemporary dancer b4 BTS. BTS usually has a back track, but attempt and usually do sing most of the song when dancing. BTS doesn't lip sinc. This song expresses Jimin's frustration and the tension that he feels as he discovers himself as a pop star (IDOL) I THINK you will enjoy all of the band's solo performances. They each bring something special to the stage.

YES PLEASE - We would love a joint reaction with your wife regarding BTS lyrics!!!! It is fascinating to hear your breakdowns - they are explained for us in trerminology we can understand and I appreciate the little boxes with info that you put up (ie: 3/4 time, etc) that help us out.... Don't worry about the length - if the info is interesting we would watch hour long videos with you..... If you are worried - split it in two with the basic info first for those who want a quick reaction and then those that want can watch the second video where you break things down fully after the initial reaction. When you were talking about how the pre chorus was a build up and when "caught in a lie" came it was like a release... thats exactly how it feels.. Its like during the prechorus I was holding my breath and when he sings Caught in a lie, I let it out again.. BTS and their staff are a brilliant group of people and as a music lover, Ive never had music in my life that I have felt and enjoyed so much as I have with BTS.

I feel Like the build-up before the line "Caught in a lie" is like you said, it's got stepping stones but also it feels like a ticking clock. Sort of building up tension... it even has a kindof click, like a grandfather clock the and finger snaps that sort of sound like a ticking clock in a way and then the "CAUGHT IN A LIE!" is like the alarm going off! The release of tention. At least that's what I hear.😁

He is absolutely singing live! BTS always sings live. Period. If they ever do use background vocals for a few measures because the choreo is really tough in a particular spot they won't even attempt to sing along with it. They NEVER lip sync. . .like, ever.

Jimin is trained in contemporary dance and one of the top dancers of the group, usually they sing live with a backing track, and it’s insane how good they are at dancing and singing live. Yes this fandom loooves deep dives and how the chords etc would be interesting. For lyrics with your wife I’d love to see her react to Singularity in particular which has more complex lyrics.

docskim the producer actually remastered/redid the song and tweeted. Said he was a young producer and BTS gave him a chance and he wasn't perfectly happy with what was release so he decided to work a bit more on it for us. It's crazy cause the original is so musically perfect to me. You might want to check out his remastered version.

Yes...he's singing LIVE while doing this beautiful choreography. I saw him perform it LIVE few years ago. Miss them so much. Had 4 tickets to see them again last year at MetLife Stadium which got postponed and then officially cancelled. 😭💜 My hearteu hurts, but everyone's health & safety is priority.

Here's info that some still aren't aware of: ❤️JIMIN, at age 11-12 started studying, performing, & competing (winning every competition), in hip hop, popping (excelled), & street dancing, while attending the renowned Just Dance Academy in Busan where he's from! He was so good that an instructor even had the high tuition fee waived at one point! This was while also attending middle school, where he loved sports, being quite athletic, joined the football team, excellent at track, great at basketball, & billiards! Jimin also, all throughout his schooling, was known as a top scholar, achieving perfect scores, especially in math & science which just always came easy to him! Jimin was even class president for 9 yrs in a row! Jimin, all throughout his schooling, was also quite good in art class, as well as calligraphy. Jimin, then also took up contemporary dance. The media, after seeing a performance of Jimin's performing at a huge Busan Festival Event, called Jimin "The rising star of Busan"!! JIMIN also studied ballet & traditional Korean dance while attending Busan High School of the Arts. Jimin still went to Just Dance Academy to take hip hop classes whenever he could because his first love has always been hip hop, even though he was now majoring in contemporary! JIMIN even had an offer to dance overseas, but declined because he also wanted to become a singer since the 2nd grade, to the dismay of one of his dance instructors who said "The world of dance was going to lose a great artist"!! So Jimin then went and auditioned for BigHit Entertainment, (company BTS is signed with), being the very last member to join, being a trainee for only a few months (which is unheard of for most Kpop idols), as opposed to the 2-3 yrs of being a trainee the other members had! But Jimin was so good that he was assigned the official title of one of the two Main Dancers, as well as Lead Vocalist. This masterpiece was Jimin's first songwriting serious experience. He wrote both lyrics and melody. Ever since, he only created absolute HITS! This man is beyond talented both as musician and performer 😊 P.S.: Jimin sings live like 80% of the song. Some of the parts are left to the background vocals (you can hear it, drowned out and quieter parts), like "Caught in a lie" part, but the rest is him singing. When you hear them sing all the time, it's easy to notice what is live and what is just song playing. What I like about BTS is that, even if they don't sing some part of the song themselves, they don't lip-sync aka don't pretend they are singing when they don't actually do that. They don't deceive their audience :)

BTS songs have their fanchants. There is the song that we are singing along and highlighting some of the words and Most often also there is additional lyrics for ARMY to sing in the songs, that are not parts that BTS sings.

Is one of the reasons you're positive about BTS that because they are genre mashup artists, they never bore us? Yes, would love a BTS playlist. I love the style, humor, and artistry of your reaction video elements choices, like the break images and texts, and the intro and outro music selections. I was a big 60s / early 70s jazz fan. So the outro resonates nicely.

Jimin classically trained dancer and was a top student. He also learned popping and locking and is just amazing.

Afaik he sings to a backing track so when he gets out of breath or feels unstable vocally, he can mute himself and the performance will be whole. I don't know if there are fanchant moments for Lie, or if the audience sometimes sings parts of it. From the concert videos I have seen, BTS audiences are relatively respectful, compared with an average pop or rock concert audience. They seem to be able to sense when it is their time to join BTS, or whatever. Sometimes, the big screens will tell the audience that it's ARMY Time, and they actually will sing along to most of a song, using Korean lyrics on the screen that have been romanized so they can pronounce them. There is a famous instance of this, where at one concert, I think it was one of the Wembley concerts, ARMYs coordinated with the BigHat concert staff to do an ARMY Time to the song Forever Young, to celebrate a birthday. I think it was Jin's birthday, though I may be wrong. Anyway, it completely surprised BTS, all of whom ended up crying from the love and astonishment they were feeling. I'm an older person with a lot of life and professional experience, and when I write comments, it kind of seems like I know a lot because time lends a particular credibility to a writing voice. However, I have been BTS ARMY for less than 2 years. I have never seen them live, in person. I'm just sharing things that I have picked up from watching video footage all over the place, and I may be misremembering sometimes, or also misinterpreting. Anyway that's my information disclaimer, LOL.

I’m pleased that you showed a live performance of Lie. Jimin was trained in contemporary dance and he uses his skills to express the emotions of this song. I think you can tell he’s singing because he adjusts his mic from time to time. I have to laugh at the bunnies because they make me think of Jungkook who is known as, Bunny, to ARMYs. He even dresses as one sometimes.

please give us the breakdown of this song... I am such a music nerd (both vocal and instrumental --> I played violin for 13 years and have been singing choral music for 11). I most definitely would watch a 30 minute video of the breakdown of this song because it's one of my favorites from Jimin! Also, the live performance has a backing track because of the intense choreo, but yes, he is singing live.

One advice.. pay attention to everything because every move says something in a live performance. Music and dance together gives you the perfect performance. When you do the reaction make sure your watching everything ( lyrics, dancing, music).

So BTS dance for most of performances, when they have concert there is only a few songs that they don't dance to or move. Soooo they have backing tracks when they perform so when they don't sing for some reason (like catch breath, etc), so there is not quiet moment also adlips are in backing track so performance feel full bc this is also essencial to kpop, that show aspect. But you can hear when he sing live and when not, if you listen carefully, usually when there is a lot of moves he sings less. Hmm so they sings live and dance, they used to work out and sing, like run on tredmil and sing songs. I would say they sing 96% live. He put on blindfold bc he sings that he lost way so he show this with "don't see" moment. To your questions, for me the in this video was enoch info. So if you want to do some full on take apart song it is up to you.

Lie, Stigma, Begin, Awake, Mama, House of Cards are supposed to be same series of songs which somehow related in a same BTS Universe story, once you have started "Lie", It might be interesting to listen the others and see in music and lyrics wise they are interact with each others.

I love seeing musicians react to this song because "OMG it just went to major sdjirohgvhskdjuirh!" That voice, the woo woo, really pulls in New Orleans To me. A touch of voo doo. It matches the minor, major, minor perfectly! You can feel the heat in the instrumental part in between. This would Never do in 4/4. Yeah, the buildup is absolutely unreal, then….Lie…wow! The complexity of the bridge does a great job. I can handle and would enjoy any discussion of the music you wish. Yeah, your wife would be very welcome. Also, they have a lesser known song with incredible complexity, quite different. ‘Jamais Vu’ that I am entranced with. Loove the baby bunnies. :)

If you listen carefully, you can hear female backing vocals throughout this song. That’s Sumin, she helped write and produce Lie. Sumin is an artist herself. She’s kinda eccentric and her music is very unique. That’s why this song is so different because it reflects Sumin’s music.

Found you through this video! Made me smile a lot! So thank you for that. As someone who loves music and grew up dissecting every piece I came across this is probably a channel I will love haha. I've had the same with BTS I love the vast majority of their songs, I think there's only a few from predebut and a couple of solo projects I haven't heard at this point), from a music standpoint even separated from lyrics or performance or anything. I love all those factors too but there is usually quite a lot of intricacy in even just the instrumental with some really interesting choices or just integration that plays out in choreo or the singing/rapping itself. I think there's only really 2/3 songs I'm not absolutely head over heels for, I still like the songs just not play tens of times a day love for them, but when I looked at the creators part of those three songs it made sense why I felt a bit differently about those as the process had been pretty different and had a similar lead idea person to other songs from other artists that I haven't enjoyed as much so it's just a mismatch of preference that knocked them from loves to likes. But I reckon 200+ loves for other songs is more than enough to keep me entertajned haha. Again, still like those songs but BTS's music always has this distinct approach to instrumentals and how they utilise beats with vocals etc and how it feeds into choreo and from their most out there song to the most stripped back there is always a sense of strong BTS sense of creativity in the way the music is crafted, instrumentation and vocals both and how they pick from those aspects of the music to emphasise emotion or specific choreo moves. I'm super excited to see what videos you will get to look at in the future. As a general rule of thumb, with BTS, when they are dancing as well as singing they will have a supportive back track (where it is obviously either a stripped back version of the original track or it only has certain lines included etc) so that they can snatch breaths without stumbling over their words but I think out of all the ones I've seen I've never seen them sing live less than 85% of the lines. For Jimin on Lie he will sometimes vary which lines he pauses on, so in this performance he paused on the first caught in a lie line but sang the next (hence the huge increase in volume on the second and also it not sounding like the processed original track on the second line, whereas the first is the track line standing alone), he has sung that line too in some performances and just snatched a quick breath instead of pausing but thinking ahead with it gives them the option to have a planned pause essentially, usually on part of the song that isn't necessarily urgent for them to sing, e.g ad libs that are on the track or a repeated line. Jimins pause option also works to add even more emphasis to that second line because when he does leave the first and just sing the second it's like there is an even more pronounced emotional jolt on that second line that changes the intensity of the chorus. Sorry for rambling on, I love when musicians stumble across BTS, usually makes for interesting videos ha, there's not been tons of musician reactors recently so I greatly look forward to watching whichever videos you decide to make. Firstly, I would really like to recommend you check out "Still With You" by Jungkook - you've already heard some of the vocalists' solo songs and I do believe you said you liked him most (not to mention, it's a beautiful piece of work and I'm pretty sure you'll love it). Secondly, let me just say how whole-heartedly interested I am in your every suggestion basically, I find your ideas extremely creative and intriguing. And lastly - you have some crazy sense of humour! LIE does leave room for different specific interpretations, but, the main/general topic is: lying to yourself and being tormented by your own mind. The song is in minor because that's how the narrator feels (upset, sad, confused, in pain, etc), the chorus being in major could be seen as the moment in which you can't contain your negative emotions anymore (when you finally scream/punch/cry/go mad/confess what's going on inside) or it could be seen as an illustration of "the lie" (you feel bad internally, but keep pretending that you are strong or happy for the outside world/other people). The choreography also has clear relation to the lyrics: for example, Jimin grabs his own head (gesture that indicates being upset due to overthinking), he also makes hand movements to cover his mouth (contain the lie). Being blindfolded at some point also indicates the idea of hidding something, closing your eyes, not wanting to face the truth or not wanting to look at yourself in the mirror. But, eventually he has to take the blindfold off, eventually the lie comes out of his mouth, he vomits the truth... Emotions can not be contained too long. And if you resist expressing them and wait until you reach rock bottom, before addressing your inner demons, it can become an even more painful process. (These are my personal thoughts on the choreography though.) I just watched this and YES PLEASE, I would love a full music breakdown of Lie. Heck, if you made a 1-hour video breaking down the structure, chords, movement, text paintings or how the lyrics connect to the music, I will watch from 0:00 to 1:00:00. This song is always my favorite to watch musicians react to, there's just so much to talk about.

Lie was one of the most successful songs in wings, and showcases the true artistry of jimin both dancing and singing, it was his firt performance to fully demonstrate his contemporary background. It was written by him for his struggles at that times, for jimin this song is very hard emotionally to performe because it was part of a very dark time and indeed is a dark one. And yes is a very hard choreography most of the dancers in the industry tried to cover the dance and you could really see that jimin does it in kind of way that is impossible to cover both technically and emotionally . As for his singing it was so good, is more when you think this song was published around 2016, 3 years since bts debut and jimin was on of the members to have zero predebut training. But his range is one of the highest in bts and he used it very well in this song, both his lower and higher ones. As for him singing live i could say he was not singing this song 100% live. They are places that he stops moving his lips and he doesn't ' hide' that he is not singing those parts live but there are places you could hear that he is indeed singing live, you could be able to notice that if you see more video performing and hear hi changes from the recording one,i recommend you to see fancams because they have a focus more in jimin

A similar technique of shifting from minor to major (or the other way around) like in the chorus of Lie is also heavily used on Jungkook, Jin, and J-Hope's song Jamais Vu. The title Jamais Vu is the opposite of Deja Vu, and it gave me chills when I noticed the shifts within in the song, especially in the chorus. Jamais Vu is the phenomenon of not being familiar with something you're supposed to be familiar with, and the composition of the song gave that overall feeling. It was a bit jarring to hear at first, but reading the lyrics of the song afterwards made that connection for me on why they decided to do those chord changes.

I always love watching musicians react to Lie ...it is very fun to watch them always freak out about how good and unexpected it is. Lie is one of my favorite songs and I will always watch anything I can about it.

The Producer of this song is Docskim and he is/was BTS's keyboardist. He wasn't a big producer until this song; it was his first hit! It released in 2016 but he reworked and released a definitive version of it earlier this year. Oh, forgot to address a couple of things. First, I've never seen BTS lipsync. They do have backing tracks for more intense choreos, especially if it's a solo song. There are certain parts they may choose not to sing because of the way the vocals for the solos are layered and for certain portions of more demanding choreo. But for those parts, you can clearly see they're not attempting to lipsync. If their lips are moving, they're singing. Although I haven't had the opportunity to see them in concert yet, I think that the song with the most impressive crowd engagement would probably be Idol. You'll see why when you get around to reacting to the song
