I’ve heard people say “BTS didn’t pave the way because they didn’t make it easier for other K-pop groups to do x, y, z.” I disagree, they have made it easier by breaking that initial barrier. Now, what you want is the the accolades/prestige/awards to fall into your favs lap. It’s not going to happen. BTS continues to work hard and if your group wants those things that BTS has they need to work for it too
This is just my personal experience, but despite listening randomly to KPOP songs before, if I wasn't exposed to BTS in 2020, I probably wouldn't be a KPOP fan overall today (to the point of travelling overseas to watch KPOP concerts and waiting for 2025 to come soon 💜). KPOP was already very popular when I started in the fandom, but it was still a niche thing. BTS made it mainstream, to the point that even random strangers can recognize KPOP songs and groups for what they are 💜 BTS did pave the way for KPOP and South Korean culture in general, and your faves group has only to win with that, so I really don't understand the hate
I’ve been Army since 2015. I’ve been there since BTS got accused of plagiarism and buying their own albums. I was there when they won for I Need You. I was there when they got on hot100. I was there for BBMA in 2017. So on and so forth. They have paved the way BECAUSE they do things organically and true to who they are. They could’ve shaken hands with industry people in 2017-2018 but didn’t. They have always worked hard to achieve everything they have. Kpop stans are just jealous and y’all really don’t have to be. If you spent a quarter of the time y’all do hating on BTS and Army, and go stream and vote, y’all’s faves might be more successful. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. This is up to y’all. Y’all have the power to help your faves rise, but you spent more time hating BTS. You spend more time harassing them and Army. THAT is more important to you than helping ur faves. The industry is competitive, rightfully so, but you don’t get into the winners circle by bullying the contestants. And that’s why y’all’s fave won’t rise. It’s so simple to figure out. It’s kpop fans who took it the wrong way and instead of acknowledging it, they made it into a competition. But then they try to make up for it by saying “X groups paved their own way” like? Duh? Kpop fans aren’t even appreciative of the awards their faves get bc it’s not as much as BTS, so they ask Army to let them win. It's like this: People in the west walk by an alley that they don't even know is there. It's just a dark area. Then one day, they see an interesting performance at the beginning of the alleyway. It is bright and startling and has many different layers. It sticks with them. They tell others about it. When they walk by again, the act is still there and is even more amazing than last time. More people come by the entrance of that alley and are so blown away by these performers -- these guys called BTS. More and more people come and soon everyone knows about this alleyway entrance. A few people sort of remember there were a couple other acts at this entrance before, but those acts didn't stay long. One or two were really good for a one-hit bit of fun. But this new act...people keep coming back for more and more and more. After a while, the people who are completely drawn in by BTS get curious what else is down this alley. They realize there are hundreds more shops here! Each selling something different, though many are very similar and they can't really tell them apart... They see some entertaining stuff though, and, one or two times, are blown away by what other stores are offering. They start to find other favorite stores. Now, those shops existed before, some for many many years! And there were lots of people who knew about them in that alleyway. But only one chunk of people, the insiders, knew this. Some outsiders had *heard* about the concept of those stores -- usually in a derogatory way -- and once or twice staff of those stores had been sighted outside the alley. And there were also some outsiders who looooved this alley, but none of their friends wanted to check it out. Very few from the outside went down that alley. Until, that is, that first act at the entrance drew them in. Now that alley has so many people milling around, looking for a favorite shop. The alley that was a bit bumpy and uneven has been smoothed down by the constant push of more and more customers coming that way. Some of these outsiders blow right by the entrance without looking. They just want to get down the alleyway that they heard was so amazing!! Those people discover other shops first. Shops that have modified their signs and straightened their shelves when they heard these new customers were actually looking at their shop windows! Everyone wins!!!!! THAT IS PAVING THE WAY.

The whole “shut the door behind them” is an excuse fans/media uses for Korean acts that fail to have bigger reach/more impact. As Army, I see Stray Kids proving that excuse as being a literal excuse, because SKZ are showing how far talent AND tenacity can get a group after/during BTS’ achievements. If a K-pop act isn’t huge, it’s up to the group’s abilities and their true fans to get them there. Simple. They’re not even “the next bts”, stray kids are themselves; there’s room for talent at the top, and pointing fingers at BTS isn’t going to make other groups appear better or diminish facts (which is that bts are overall consistently and globally number one). 😂 Fandoms need to accept that, and help other artists that have “it” get higher up top too (stays, we’re looking at you).
I'm a die hard Rock and Roller always have been until 2019 when i saw BTS perform on MMA. I was stunned that i had never heard of them before nor had i even seen 1 performance; but after watching that performance, i can't get enough of BTS. Watching the history and how they got together along with their difficult road, i can now proudly say that i am "ARMY" and i support these guys in every way i can. Their album's are outstanding, their performances a real feast for the eyes, i just can't get enough of BTS. Congratulations to them for breaking that glass ceiling and riding to #1 in all of our hearts. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
This is the thing that really confuses me and was made very clear during Ch.2 that other kpop fans care more about "taking BTS down" then they actually care about uplifting their favs. I've known for a long time that during Korean fan voting & some western voting as well that kpop fans will vote for groups they don't even stan because they want to see BTS lose and they don't care who wins it just as long as BTS doesn't. And they like to pretend like BTS got huge because of their English songs when they had sold out stadium tours well before that and hits on HOT100. Also many of these people who like to scream at BTS for "seeking western validation" and complain about BTS having English songs will have favs that have always released English songs some Even full albums of only English. And some well before BTS ever did it in 2020 but when they do it it's a huge issue. A lot of people think it's because BTS are at the top that people hate on them which to an extent maybe true because I've heard this said of many artists but BTS was hated out the gate by so many when they were rookies & broke as hell. I use to be very openminded about other groups and I didn't think anything negative towards any of them. Then 2022 Festa aftermath happened and what I saw changed my thinking completely, I saw groups especially their companies scrambling in desperation to take their place. Allegedly buying awards at US attendance award shows like VMAs when they didn't even qualify for the nomination based on the eligibility period. The media blowing the "hiatus" up and mass reporting they were breaking up. I just saw so much that it completely changed my opinion, groups that were talking about wanting BBMA & Grammy awards or noms but crediting only gen. 2 groups as their inspiration without even mentioning BTS even though they were the first ones to do these things. I realize many are under some awful companies but there have been a few instances where the idols themselves could have corrected something without even mentioning BTS by name, example Carpool Karaoke on James Corden one of the members of BP could have corrected James with "first kpop girl group" when he misspoke saying "First Kpop group". And many more things like this have made me raise my eyebrows towards some groups when before I only blamed the company.
Not to mention these companies always use BTS when convenient. For example: YG's media play always mentions BTS whenever they have to promote BP. I noticed this since 2019. They released BP songs just a week after BTS releases their album or song and it's not coincidence at all because they found out how the algorithm works. They basically rode the BTS' wave and these girls gave credit to the 2nd gen when ask about their fame lol. I don't want to think bad about these girls but the recent fake dating rumor of Tae and Jennie made me chaged my mind. How it exploded on the twilight of Jennie's acting gig in "The idol" and Jennie's subtle post feeding the delulus are just so telling of their companies agenda. YG of cource was the first to covet BTS' throne when the news about their group hiatus broke out.

And i want to add, most of this was western centric, or US centric, but they have outstanding achievements and impact in other countries as well - from UK chartsx France, Australia, etc but also popularity wise in countries like India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and even South east Asia and Latin Markets. Ofc kpop was popular in SEA, Japan, Latin markets before, but bts became the biggest group globally and they have that long lasting impact.
The outrage of the fact that BTS paved the way is because most Kpoppies became a fan of their group after BTS had already paved the way. They will never know that ARMY begged for their songs to be played on the radio, their albums to be sold in stores etc. They already had everything handed to them, so they will never acknowledge ARMY and BTS work towards it. And as soon as you give them proofs, it's crickets and not long after they are back to their narrative.

BTS paved the way for kpop becoming a global phenomenon. Why can't people understand that minimal interest of previous artists does not compare to how things blew up for so many other multiple artists after BTS started to gain worldwide popularity.

The first K-pop song I heard was Gangnam Style, but I didn't know it was K-Pop, I didn't know that Psy was South Korean, and I didn't even know that South Korea and the North. It was because of BTS that I literally expanded my geographic knowledge, removing the thought that the Asian continent only had China and Japan lol 👍😁💜

And if you want to know something else, they never taught me about the Asian continent at the beginning of elementary school, they only started teaching and talking about Asia in my sixth year, and they only talked about China and Japan. And for a long time, I thought Asians were horrible people, especially because in my country (Brazil), there is a lot of prejudice against Asians.

Excellent report!! Some K-popers are offended because it´s often heard that BTS paved the way but it´s absurd to deny it. They have achieved awards, performances and recognitions that no other group has achieved until now. Even the fact that BTS is on hiatus has allowed other groups to win awards that only BTS previously got. No offense but these are facts. So, without denying the achievements of the 2nd generation, they never had the massiveness or recognition that BTS currently has.

In addition, they had no other competition. After 1Direction broke up most artists were solo. I would also not under-estimate the role of Blackpink, Netflix dramas & covid. However, going forward there are, much more English-friendly talented K-pop groups. BTS is now in decline as was indicated by their personal hiatus (2022). But it will be military, solo work with the odd world tour as a grp once in and while to generate income. Plus Hybe now have more than one king/queen to look after. so like most groups, they went up and now down. which is good, for boys bands are for the boys hybe are good at hype. ♥
If Seo Taiji and Psy can agree BYS paved the way, then its BTS Paving the Way. 2nd generation was popular but they did not pave the way or make things easoer for groups coming after them. BTS living legends in their own time.
