Why Dont We had at least moderate success in terms of streaming and they also have a small following overseas particularly in Asia that they get to tour. Also the irony of BTS is that their label is making them release english songs for it to be played on US market. JLS is formed in X Factor UK were pretty big after they were in that competition but only in the UK they never made their mark outside. The Wanted is a british boyband and they were rivals of One Direction. They were pretty big in the US and had a few US awards of their own then they went on hiatus and one of the members got sick. That boyband member got a point and tbh not alot of us are over One Direction yet. Like i bet if they reunite those fangirls will leave their current kpop fanbase.Also when the guy said theyll be more massive bec they released english songs he was right. So its not at all racist its just form of marketing. Its funny when he said theyll just sing korean parts if they do collaborations look what they did with the song for Coldplay. I get their points. Dynamite and Butter were huge in the US. Other than that the rest of the comments they made are yes pretty racist.

Kpop artists give a SHOW! Look at JHope Lollapalooza stage. He rapped & sang in Korean & people who had never seen BTS were blown away bc of stage presence & prep. Also, those western boy bands did sterile music with lyrics that were empty & they also did little for their fans. BTS came angry with lyrics that spoke about social issues & sincere youth angst. They clearly showed how much their fans meant to them & gave back as much love as they received The western music industry can’t manufacture sincerity.

I dont know any artists that do sincere fan activitiws on their own. Bts did that even before debuting, 10th yr now, still doing it, solo, with pther members and as a group. It's how bts and army relate and build love for one another. There's no other artist that there's an equal and great amount of love bettwen them and their SOLID fandom 💜

Hi. I can totally relate to what you’re saying. I am a 54 year old mom of four and I am a huge BTS fan. So what if they don’t sing in English. They’re music, lyrics, and vocals are amazing! My daughter introduced me to Kpop in 2014, and Kpop skills and training are on a whole other level. BTS had so many international fans before and I feel like the music industry executives decided to capitalize on that. But let us not get it twisted. BTS deserves all of their accolades and awards. They are extremely talented.

I don't care if I don't understand the language I can at least appreciate the music and the performance. If I go to a BTS concert I'm going there to listen to them sing live, see them dance and perform. I'd be appreciating their efforts and be amazed by what they've work so hard to make. And about understanding the lyrics, I can always listen to it again on RU-vid with subtitles anytime. And not just BTS, any other groups or soloist that speak a different language.

Motown had an artist development program. The artists had vocal, dance, image training. Years worth of training. Motown had songwriters, producers, choreographers to develop their artist. So I agree 100% of your assessment of the difference of western and korean artists today and the labels/companies. Other a few western artists we have gotten away from hard work and effort a long time ago. To be half-assed, mediocre, and ignorant (speaking American?) not mention racist shows why they weren't successful. It's laziness and entitlement. I had never heard of any of those failing groups. BTS has worked hard and earned every bit of their success.
@beany1944

I also see equally hard-working white artists, black, brown and yellow who are highly talented but dont get the recognition, like Pink, Allison Morisette ( sorry if I misspelt) and many more. I don't think they fit the cookie-cutter pop industry. Then you see artists who are mediocre but they are seen as the bees knees. All they have to do is being half naked, shake their behinds, crawl around on stage and are over-sexualised objects. No talent what so ever. That guy are not in the same league as BTS, in fact, BTS is way above them. Jealousy is eating him up though.

I think you're spot on with your analysis/thoughts about the difference in artists development in the West vs Kpop. It's like you're playing against NBA League Teams vs College League Teams, it's not even close. Who do you think will produce better teams, the team that does 1000+ hours, or a team who just had 100 hours of training? And yes, they (the Western Music Industry) do come off as cocky and previliged if they think they can get a big piece of the pie (back) whenever and whoever they want to without putting in the hours and hours of really hard and dedicated/humbled work. Great points and video, appreciate your honest opinion on this as an American and for being open minded! Keep up the good work.
@Finesseyamina
@Finesseyamina Год назад
Western culture has it set up for them to win so they feel entitled & cocky in their thought process. They think doing the bare minimum will equal great results but that’s not always the case. Radio push has a huge hand in it cause if your getting 75 million in radio spins you can go number 1. It creates an illusion as though your doing great and on top while still being sub par in talent. This applies to all artist not just boy bands❤️ Thanks for your input.

Also it’s the lack of A&R…. Ppl who make meme music in their bedrooms for SoundCloud are getting deals without budgets because streaming makes it hard for labels to make money. And these artists are thrown on stage who may only have played for their moms. It’s very cynical for labels to think this is what an audience or artist deserves. The Korean industry has taken those 10,000 hours to heart, now the Western industry wants to be mad about it.

That was a really interesting video. I love it when BTS is placed in the proper context and appreciated for what they are. I can't get over the entitlement of that guy saying the world needs to have a white, English-speaking boy band on top... not only that, he kept on saying "speak American", LMAO. Since when is American a language? Man, the ignorance of that wording. And then comes CNCO, blowing off any chance of ever earning my respect with their "mock Korean language" - as an Asian who grew up in the West, I came across this kind of mockery a few times in certain European countries (back in the 90s when BTS was still busy being born and stuff) - it is hurtful and disrespectful, and again, beyond ignorant. The more I see what else is out there, the more singularly wonderful BTS is, in my eyes (and millions of others'). Like another commenter here said so perfectly already: you can't manufacture sincerity. BTS is not just singing/rapping/dancing talent, looks, style, showmanship, charisma, cleverness and artistry, they are authentic and sincere in whatever work they put out, and that's the key missing ingredient among all the other wannabe groups who barely have a fraction of the integrity, discipline and humility that BTS has to begin with. BTS has heart, something that can't be faked or imitated.
@mitchikotiongson
@mitchikotiongson Год назад
One of the things I noticed being an ARMY is that BTS is always respectful to everyone. They respect others' religion, language, etc. They exude maturity that none of the bands I heard here who think mocking another culture or language is an in thing. When you hear their ments you always hear them asking about the audiences' health, if they're OK due to the cold weather. During their comebacks they make sure ARMY who attend are provided for. During the cons in Korea when it was hot in summer their BigHit provided free water to anyone within the stadium area. I know this because I was there. When it looked like it would rain or if you were seated at the arena area where water will rain down on people they provided discardable raincoats. The point here is they are caring and respectful of other people. They make it a point to check on everyone. Even at a high point in the con Jk noticed people being hurt at the barricades and told Rm to make people move back. Their sincerity touch people and everyone can see and feel that.

I am an elder ARMY, before I discovered BTS I was In the mindset that there was nothing original in American music anymore. So, I started listeng to other global artists. That's, when I started listening to KPop and BTS stood out, because they were different, relatable. Their music is just darn good. There is deeper meaning behind the Korean words in they're lyrics which becomes poetic. The members write, produce, play musical instruments, sing, rap in Korean, Japanese and English. They dance, practice and work out constantly and still give their time to talk to ARMY. On top of all that they've also received college educations. 10 years together, they became a family, not a boy band. Their solo work is phenomenal. J-Hopes album and concert was fantastic! I'm looking forward to the other members work. Lord help us when they release their Come Back, it'll be amazing!

BTS did not fill the void left by One direction. BTS debuted in 2013 and One Direction were already on the scene. Both boy bands were existing at the same time One Direction were already hitting charts while BTS worked their way up endlessly. Then in 2016 One Direction disbanded. BTS keep on working releasing their unique genre of music and releasing top hits one after another with full success and with the strong support of their once near collapsing production company. The full effort by BTS began to grow global and their fandom ARMY increased tremendously. BTS grow on their own creating history and reaching apical beyond the reach of other artists especially boybands 🙀

The American music industry now is in the same place the Big Three were in around about 2015-16: these Bulletproof guys came out of absolutely nowhere and started taking over. They were a Threat To The Establishment and had to be Stopped. The Big Three didn't manage to do that (because that's not how ARMY works :)) and that's despite them having far better music, rappers, vocalists and dancers *then* than the American industry can produce *now* . Oafs like the ones in this video would collapse after an hour or so of any K-pop group's dance practice. 🙄 And so, like the Big Three before them, Billboard and the radio stations and the recording academy are trying to shove BTS out of the American spotlight. Changing rules (like Bulk digital sales no longer counting towards bb position) and removing awards (like Top Social Artist) and skewing numbers (like making radio spins the #1 metric for charting)... and all it does is damage the industry's own reputation, decrease the worth and significance of American awards and honors, and make ARMY more determined than ever to keep BTS at the top where they belong. 💜

That American superiority just makes me sick! (I am American, btw.) They can’t deal with the fact that an Asian group is more popular than they’ll ever hope to be or any American group. And, just to clear things up, BTS is not just a “boy group,” or “K-pop group.” They are so much more no matter how much the American music industry insists on putting them in those boxes to try to keep them down.

I don't speak Korean but am learning it. BTS have been working in their English for a long time and have started releasing some English / Korean music. Army's around the world now have subtitles. English is a shocking language to learn even American people I know say we have strange pronunciations Australia 🇦🇺. Young kids from teenagers,Mother and Grandmothers and I'm a Grandmother too, men ,women and LBGTI follow BTS . I first saw them last year on the JAMES CORDON, JIMMY FALLON and STEPHEN COLBERTm Jimin stood out for me because of his warm friendly nature and smile. I then went down the BTS rabbit hole and watched everything from 2013 and onwards. Started with the history of BANGTAN AND ONWARDS watching eveything twice some 3 times. They even survived COVID and got it even though they had the Vaccine and still got COVID I could go on writing and writing but should stop. They also all have to do compulsory Military Service for 6 months when they turn 31 Korean Culture which is 30 in Western culture. and support BTS. Prior to them I’d say I rated Bruno Mars as a great singer/dancer/writer (and still is); but I’m hear to tell you NOT one boy band or girls for that matter (from the 50s thru today) can touch BTS’ energy, interactions with ARMY, dance moves, singing, acting, etc. etc! Did you catch yourself when you said, ‘they put in their ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’, because THEY HAVE & continue to so. It’s a damn shame & an embarrassment for any US citizen to exhibit hatred/racism towards BTS. Regardless, they are at the top of the World! 1st time seeing your channel 😀

Thank you for your honest opinion, which I totally agree with. First of all, the one guy in the trio that kept saying “singing in American” doesn’t even know his own language is called English! I think two of the biggest differences is culture and dedication. Western artists are so used to instant gratification and don’t think they should have to work hard for a long time to reap rewards. It’s a huge cultural difference! Also, a lot of Western artists lose their humility the instant they get their first big check/win. The K-pop groups are not in the tabloids because they have chosen to follow an expected lifestyle that does not condone things that would put them in a bad light. I could go on and on…and have, sorry.

There is room enough for everyone in the industry. The black boy bands, the brown boy bands, the white boy bands, and diverse boy bands all had global success. They were enjoyed by all at home and abroad...... however, BTS who are also influenced by western artists just like the rest of the bands and us, came with a different level of artistry in their performance that was new, refreshing, dynamic and had mainly clean lyrics. They are relatable, humble, hardworking, and talented guys from normal backgrounds who have made a tremendous impact upon debuting and now that they are a global powerhouse I don't see why we can't celebrate their success and hard work by acknowledging and awarding their efforts. In S. Korea they use a different approach than the West to groom and train their idols and it shows in their polished performances. It is time for the music industry here in USA to put aside its prejudices and promote, celebrate and enjoy what the majority of the people want. Never before have I seen a boy band attract all genders, all ages, all races, celebrities and dignitaries alike! How many boy bands have spoken at the UN and the Whitehouse??? i would like to add, imo it's not just the years of hard work and training. there's a cultural aspect that helps kpop bands flourish and perform as well as they do - teamwork and focus on the group. it's a very western thing to focus on the individual, and as was pointed out in the video, western bb tend to explore and push themselves only when they go solo - and they always go solo. in bts' case, they all seemed to find their role in the group and worked to be successful as a team. the ginormous natural talent pool in the US, and just culturally being closer to where pop music was created, you'd think a top notch kpop style band could be formed and unmatched. cuz let's be real, 5 bruno mars or 7 beyonce's in a group couldn't be beat, however, they could never last. i don't think the discipline to work together as one and not have a need to stand out in front is built into our western DNA.

I love your perspective; however, I would like to add a couple things this video did not bring out specifically about BTS. For financial reasons coming from a small relatively powerless and broke small company, BTS had to scrap its original concept of being a purely hip-hop group and try to survive by becoming part of the predominant Idol platform. That came with comportment expectations and a disproportionate marketing to younger females. Doing so got them by through some difficult early years but also made them the Korean equivalent of a boyband. Their audiences had very few males and they wound up falling into stereotypes like other Idol groups. Just like with Western boybands, Idols were seen as having low artistry and commercial quality by most Koreans. They were like circus performers for the youth separated from more mature, respectable music. So despite all BTS was doing to create original, complex often hard works, the press immediately labeled them yet another boyband putting out mundane music while looking exaggeratedly attractive and behaving exaggeratedly for females. It is no surprise Western media couldn't get by this and actually listen to the music or witness the quality of their performances. They were immediately boxed with the familiar, the Western boy band with all the accompanying assumptions. Personally, I think BTS may have sought to shed the excesses of the Idol platform they needed early on by expanding into global markets. The West unfortunately was unprepared for a group of Asians, branding them a boyband even if only some aspects of their work fit the template. Keep in mind that it was only in the 1960's that governmental restrictions on Asians started coming down, something which echoes how governmental protections for African Americans did not start coming into significant existence until that time period. So, prejudice remains and sometimes pops up in ugly ways. I am not sure if it was this content creator but there is a whole documentary on radio station payola which kept BTS off the radio except for the English only works. Basically, BTS would go radio station to radio station across the country, engage in pleasantries, give gifts, give the station samples as part of interviews receiving promises of spins, then leave with zero spins ever occurring. They had not engaged in payola.
@WE__BTS
@WE__BTS Год назад
BTS did NOT give gifts to the radio stations. It was ARMYs who did that (to thank them for playing spins, not as a bribe beforehand). If BTS would have given gifts before spins, that would have been unethical

Because the American music industry- the recording academy- is stuck in the 1950s-60s. Grammys was actually established in 1959, and the 'white American male dominant' of that social era has changed in the country... but not in the halls of the academy, despite their occasional token non-white and non-male. They still hold the line on non-Americans; they've grudgingly allowed the expansion of 'American' music to 'Western' music, where west means US, UK, Canada, Australia...... because they still operate on the (idiotic) idea that American music is naturally the best out there. They're unwilling to stop awarding American artists and music, but they're also unwilling to admit that their 'global' awards are actually just more local awards like any other country.

I believe that talent is not measured by the number of fans the artist has or the money spent on a performance. Rather, I believe that practice and passion make all the change. Most of my favorite artists aren't popular but they still believe in their music. By communicating their intentions and sharing different messages that are important to them. I also follow kpop for a long time, since the second generation (BIGBANG, Block B, etc.). I would say that the kpop industry pushed its artists to the limit (also a dark side) compared to the western industry which sometimes just kept doing what it was doing (why change a recipe that works for the boy bands). I think what is most disappointing in both industries is the lack of recognition of the talent and passion of certain artists. BTS started with nothing but their talent, passion, and determination to keep going. They could have given up a long time ago, but they continued despite the challenges of kpop (the big 3 companies) and the western industry. I think a lot of artists want to be popular to be popular. The difference is that BTS (although they want to achieve some recognition like a GRAMMY) just wanted to continue the music and share their love with ARMY. Finally, I believe that the judgment that the industry, the artists and the people towards the fans literally represents racism. Just because it's an Asian band doesn't mean they can't be better than another American artist. Maybe it's because I'm not American that I don't have the devotion to having someone who is the stereotype of American Artist. Talent is not an ethnicity, a way of speaking, a way of dressing, a gender, it is to devote oneself to what one loves and to share this love with others. So let's appreciate the talent of BTS for who they are. I think I could write a book on that subject ahaha :').

I'm not even a bts fan, but the comments from the other boy groups are just plain stupid. I hate when people say "oh we can't understand what they are saying" reading lyrics or learning some Korean isn't that hard. And as a non English native it's so disrespectful, because when I was growing up before I learned English I didnt understand any lyrics from other countries other than my own. Yet America or other countries big artists still have a lot of fans from outside of their own country. It's a English native speakers privilege. And on top of that music is music!! You don't have to listen to the lyrics to like a song. There's a reason why people like classical music, techno or other melodies. They don't have lyrics. So are they saying it's not good then? I bet they were vibing to despacito before is was done by Justin Bieber. They are just jealous and closed minded. They should think before they speak.

What you are saying is so absolutely 100% correct. So much of what BTS, and other K-Pop groups and artists bring, is energy as well as talented singing, dancing, and great songs. Look at what Psy just did, and that man is 45 years old, and he was dancing his a** off!! They are also very, very devoted to the fans and humbly grateful for ARMY. All their success without little to no radio play. I'm not saying that boybands have to dance to be entertainers, but they need to be more than lackluster guys holding onto a mic. They need to deliver a show. You're also right that artist development has been forsaken in the rush for the 'next big thing'. Those boy bands being interviewed (Big Time Rush?? CNCO??) were so xenophobic and racist and condescending, it was gross. I'm glad that BTS has outshined them. They need to be humbled. Discovered BTS over 2 years ago and let me tell you -- they are special!! Their music has a message and some of their emotional songs can just touch your soul like nothing I've ever heard. Not to mention their personalities and how open they are about their lives which is so unusual. I was a fan of Elvis and the Beatles but BTS has them beat. And, sorry but other boy bands are just boring. And pretty much all American music these days is so bland I can't listen to it. And you are so right about the difference in training. There are other k-pop groups I like although BTS is on another level. The term you used "lackluster" for American music is a perfect description. I am ashamed for the arrogance and racism shown on that video. Please know we are not all like that. That's another thing I love about BTS. Excellent video and you are right. I am a white 69 year old American woman. I have passed over all these boy bands including New Direction, Backstreet Boys, etc. They never interested me. Why? BTS is something altogether different. They have a social conscious. They are charitable. Their fanbase covers all age groups, ethnicities, & genders. They write & produce most of their own music, their lyrics are meaningful, and their music videos & award show performances, especially on Asian award shows, are mini concerts. All this and they are wildly talented. RM joined the groip on 2010 and Jimin had the shortest training time (6 months) before they debuted on June 13th 2013. They are the biggest, because they deserve to be. Last but not least, they are genuine & love each other like brothers. The West can a lot from learn, but they probably won't top them. They would have to break records set by Michael Jackson and The Beatles plus win 500 awards. 💜

Thank you for the reaction. Everything that was said here was so true. I still remember the way BTS used to be so disrespected in Korea and stuff e.g their name being dragged in the mud for plagiarism and stuff, being disrespected by other people because they came from a small company. It seems that only now people in Korea respect their name so much. I remember they way some ARMYs on twt were like they won’t allow BTS to be disrespected again so that’s where I would say their started to grow in popularity (not forgetting their hard work of course). ARMY would spend so much time streaming until they started to climb up the charts world wide and especially in America. Honestly I don’t think there is a gap but by default there will be the biggest boy/girl group all the time because someone just has to come out on top. I feel that a lot of groups now are jealous of their success because they are basically being successful in a land they didn’t grow up in so it seems weird to people. People believe by default a successful group in America is a bunch of white guys which BTS has proved wrong and which disturbs them. Honestly speaking, they are group that I have liked that have been like no other and K-pop in general. The songs, the performances are just top notch. If you ask me which concert I would like to go to I would choose BTS/K-pop group without thinking. I feel that BTS will remain successful because they are obviously bringing something different so people are liking it more them western groups because the concept of them gets repetitive so people are getting bored and are more hooked to BTS. Yes they will receive racism, it’s America for goodness sake. In order to defeat BTS, someone has to bring something unique to the table which I believe they don’t have in store whatsoever. (Sorry this is long)😂 (Sorry for the grammar mistakes. I wrote this up at 1am)

Adding on I think the other industries failed to realize that BTS is not really a “boy band”… Definition of boyband: a pop group composed of young men whose music and image are designed to appeal primarily to a young teenage audience. 2 definitely on boyband: A boy band is loosely defined as a vocal group consisting of young male singers, usually in their teenage years or in their twenties at the time of formation, singing love songs marketed towards girls. Many boy bands dance as well as sing, usually giving highly choreographed performances Well that isn’t BTS. Yes they have pop songs but their do SO MANY GENRES of music not just pop. While BTS music does help the youth and that BTS’s name is about helping to the youth and protect their ideal (plus says youth doesn’t= females only). HOWEVER their music is healing and can help people in any age. The fandom is of all ages, genders, culture, regions, etc… Yes they are a group of men that make music together but that isn’t the only thing that defines BTS to be called a boy band… Edit: plus majority of the stereotypes that come with a boyband only scratches the surface of BTS, which makes BTS not fit into those stereotypes (hopefully this makes sense)

What we say is jealousy has no medicine in the world... Those who say BTS should not be in America or should not sing in America, then prove that you are better than BTS. By the way music doesn't look for language or whether the people are black and white, it only looks for good music... The music that people should enjoy and the music that people should feel their heart is the true music. This kind of music BTS had always given to us. If BTS is number one in every award show then the only reason behind it is that people around the world love their music. BTS concerts in America are always a great success because people always love them and their music. There language is not a barrier and skin colour doesn't matter at all... Only music is important. That's the reason why BTS is special from all other so-called western bands. The biggest example is Lollapalooza... If their language really matters then jhope wouldn't be able to shine in that concert... Jhope proves to us that music doesn't need any language and that makes him a huge success in the concert. People really enjoyed his music, they even sang with him, cheering for him and supporting him ... They even named the concert as Hobipalooza... That's the power of BTS. So stop being rude and jealous towards BTS... Instead make some good which can always be in people's hearts and also prove you are better than BTS. Never ever say bad words about BTS. They are much better than you and your so-called western bands.

They have a member, Hyunjin, that like Jin was recruited for looks only. He started with basically no skills. The guy didn’t want to make it on looks and is known for being extremely hardworking. He is now considered one of the top performers of his generation. I really love both groups. I really had to say it that I do sing along to the songs and sing in Korean also (sometimes badly I'm not going to lie but can now sing 2 songs from beginning to end in both English and Korean - House of Cards, Piped Piper ) but unlike that spoiled little brat of a boy who is packing a tantrum, I'm not above reading the subtitles and actually getting a deeper understanding of BTS songs. I'm so over mediocre groups/soloists thinking that putting out a half descent song while flashing some skin is going to cut it anymore. It is just so shallow for me now and I can't and won't go back. I'm waiting for the day that a Western group comes out looking and acting like BTS because that is the only way they are going to be able to compete with Korean music now.

KPOP is what I listen to now since 2017 and the first group I saw was BTS. Been hooked ever since. The other KPop groups are awesome. You don't need to understand it to like it. The lyric videos have the language for you. You're right what's going on.

The worst part of all this is not accepting that someone is better than you cause of 10 years of practice and love and know how of your profession. The second part is that North Americans want everybody singing in English, why? I can hear someone singing in French; Italian, Japanese, Kazakh,.... an even I don´t understand a word, the music fills my heart and my ears and my mind. Sorry. BTS is something else, not having anything to do about boy bands, Kpop or anything like that. But 7 extra talented, warm hearted, brilliant, funny brothers working together to share their talents and love for music. Does it really matter or make any difference from which country are you from? So if you are a painter, a dancer, a musician, an athlete, it is ok to be from any country, but if you are a singer you have to be from the U.S. or to speak English to be good?

Nail hit directly on the head. No passion, no hunger, just feel they are sooooo deserving (ha). BTS, EXO,ASTRO,SUPER M,These are working groups, they work together for the group. Western groups can't wait to solo. (SELFISH)
