Hello BTT folks, some clarification on the probe issues would be most helpful. This is confusing, as the new port was meant to be better suited to this kind of probes.
@SergeiSugaroverdoseShuykov

it's a good idea to at least bore holes through board on caps connectors so enthusiasts can replace caps themselves placing them on back side of board: actually it's impossible to fit SMD caps with bigger voltage on face side of board while holes can be bored in newer revision w/o any issues(ofc if there's no traces under them)
@Kalvinjj
@Kalvinjj 3 года назад
@@SergeiSugaroverdoseShuykov I think having through hole ones sideways like some Arduino CNC shields do could make that possible, but that would of course make them stick out further to either way and thus the jumpers go somewhere else, either jumps or caps have to move.

One small observation. The header that you called out above the fan ports is an SPI header. For the Raspberry Pi connection, both serial and power come from the "UART" header directly to the right of "MOTOR7". There are 2x5v, 4xGND, and TX/RX in a non-pi standard orientation (unlike the spider header layout that matches the Pi's). If you are going to use this header, be mindful of the pin layout in your jumper as to not damage your Pi or your Octopus. If you plan on using UART instead of USB, you will need to setup the firmware to use "Communication interface (Serial (on USART2 PD6/PD5))".

Would actually want larger than 50V caps for 48V motor power. Those bulk caps tend to loose a significant amount of capacitance (up to 50% in some cases) due to DC bias. I would argue that the 35V caps used are correctly sized for 24V.
@TheWhatnever
@TheWhatnever 3 года назад
You are thinking of MLCCs. Aluminium electrolytic caps are almost not affected by dc bias.
@ZachSchimke
@ZachSchimke 3 года назад
Yeah, I was thinking MLCCs. I rarely (if ever) use axial/radial caps in my designs. Still a good idea to have a cap rating higher than 5% of the input voltage since most power supplies' ratings will be about that. Better safe than sorry.

Really enjoyed the video and this will help me with getting my 2.4 unit operational. I would like to share a caution. When handling circuit boards with ESD (electrostatic discharge) sensitive components, please consider using an ESD wrist strap and mat that is connected to an earth ground. Watching you touch pins and connectors made me cringe as low voltage discharges, which you can't see or feel, can weaken the internal structures of IC's and other devices. This can shorten the lifetimes of those parts and cause failure a few months down the road. Anyway, just passing along a tip to help keep printers up and running.

Why is the outro music 2x louder than the rest of the video?

Just checked. Accidently dropped the audio for it in the same timeline as the voiceover. Which got bumped up a bit. My bad

3:48 What I want to see gone is that numbering starting with 0. Its make no sense and its confusing. The FIRST motor(or whatever the numbering refers to)makes more sense to be 1 and not 0.

I would not use those 35V capacitors to anything over 24V. With 48V, I would use 60V capacitors.

Im a fan of what some board manufacturers are doing now where they are moving to naming the motors just M0-M7 (or however many steppers are on the board) Board labeling doesnt matter, its all firmware configuration dependent for motor assignment

You really want them to spend money on packaging? I hate fancy packaging. I always wonder how much less I could have paid if they just used a brown cardboard box. I also hate throwing out the nice packaging. What a waste of resources. Now that I've vented, I'll want the rest of the video.

I agree the world could do without fancy ass packaging, after all all your going to do with it is throw it in the recycling bin, this new trend should not be encouraged.

wires that costs more than half ender 3 v2
@CanuckCreator
@CanuckCreator 3 года назад
Yes they are pricey. But if you factor in the material cost of the high quality wire used and the man hours it takes to build the loom yourself...it isnt that bad really

@@CanuckCreator have to agree I'm going to buy a good quality wiring loom, I'll keep the wire that came with my kit for something else.

Are you keeping the packaging for yourself as a display item or just throwing it in the bin? It seems like a massive waste to be Producing packaging that is using excessive resources

If one board is saved from shipping damage it pays for the manufacturing of 100 proper boxes.

@@mrfrenzy. definitely need proper packaging and foam internally but a plain cardboard box offers just as protection.

These boards are so damn cheap the only thing holding me back is my printer (cr-10 v2) and the headache of switching. I think I may be a coreXY in the future with that MCU.

Why are you glad for expensive printed boxes that get thrown in the trash. I don't want to pay for that. Put some cool art on your website. I don't want to pay for the box. I want the board to designed well.
