Thanks for stopping by the Late Brake Show. This emotional episode sees Jonny help unearth a double bubble car genuine barnfind. Well, one bubble car was in the barn, the other classic was discovered in bushes next to the barn. Both colourful, characterful icons of the thrifty 1950s, the BMW Isetta three wheeler inside the lock-up was buried under decades of hoarded car and boat parts. It will be restorable, despite being partly dismantled for renovation.
The Messerschmitt Kabinen Roller (KR) cabrio in the bushes is all there, but sadly beyond any form of realistic restoration. Such a rare car to see anywhere, let alone find in undergrowth. Both cars were owned by Dean Holling's late father, who was an engineer and inventor. Dean's Dan loved quirky contraptions. He built a robot in the 1950s, and built almost anything he turned his hand to. The return to his late father's barn was undoubtedly an emotional experience for Dean, but the stories and the discovered cars hopefully makes for a lovely story. Will the cars be sold for donor or restoration? That remains to be decided, but if you are keen to purchase one or both then by all means contact The Late Brake Show via email contact@thelatebrakeshow.com
Hopefully you enjoy this episode. We must take this chance to say a huge thank you to the Holling family for granting Jonny access.

What an episode! Know what i love most? Jonny doesn’t feel like a Tv show host or interviewer. It’s like he’s your car knowledgable best mate who’s always ready to jump in and get his hands dirty. That’s kind of rare these days. I laughed so hard at the banter between them about the “Top Spec”. So natural and unforced.

I pretty much watch just RU-vid nowadays well for the last 5 or 6 years hardly ever watch the TV at the end of the day its what is entertainment for you and unfortunately most of the TV shows try to appeal to everyone and that doesn't work if you like this sort of thing then RU-vid is the way to go, I was just watching a guy build a mustang from all new panels for 45 minutes he literally spot welds a load of panels together but I'm glued to it, now by far Johnny's barn finds are my favourite thing to watch Johnny is just great dunno what it is but I feal like I'm meditating just zone out and enjoy it!

This wasn't just a car video, this was a beautiful testament to a father and his relationship with his son. I found this very moving, and it goes to show how the car has become more than a mode of transport. More than a thing for lugging stuff about. It's a vessel for our obsessions and a window into our lives. Epic.

The Isseta which was “British” made was probably made in the old Pullman Carriage Works just outside Brighton station. There was an article in the Brighton Evening Argus a few years ago. The Pullman Carriage works had no road access as they are under some cliffs in a cutting so all the parts came in by train down from Victoria Station in a goods waggon attached to the end of a passenger train. After the cars were assembled they were sent back to London in goods wagons and unloaded back at Victoria. The article had photographs of a bubble car that had been bought by someone in Brighton and rather than pick it up in London he asked to collect it from the works. Apparently they shut off the power to the line one Sunday morning and laid planks over the railway line and drove it off. That’s some service.

Great episode Jonny, my Grandad had a Messerschmitt bubble car back in the day; apparently the extreme lightness was an issue in high winds, and the story I was always told was of him driving across Dartmoor one stormy night, and coming across a random person walking along the road at which point he insisted that the pedestrian have a lift as he needed the 'ballast' to keep the car on the road!

Such a lovely video - understandably, emotional and memory-jogging for Dean. And also emotional for the 'loss' of the Messerschmitt - a quirky, characterful, "of-the-moment" bubble car. But it's still amazing to think that, some 60-70 years ago, someone's skills and efforts went in to manufacturing those bubble cars and that, here in 2021, they are still giving enjoyment and wonder. A great video - thanks Jonny (& Dean)

He travelled all round the uk in it (including to fort william as one sticker in the glass proclaimed! which is quite impressive as he lived in sutton) it was moved in the back of a hire van and when we picked it up it came apart exactly like this one into shell and chassis! it was sold not longer after as it really was beyond our skills and budget along with a bucket of spares including the headlight. I hope it gets a chance to ride again one day!

But I'm going again, and will see Fort William next time. (I'm going to chicken out, though, and not travel by Isetta, but by TRAIN!. I love how much you know about them, even if it’s all been researched I love the commitment. 10 times better than tv no scripted made up shite drama for people who don’t give a monkeys about cars 👌🏻

The best episode of this channel so far IMHO. Jonny in his element and Dean is wonderful. I'll be happy to see a follow-up on the BMW or an update about what Dean decided to do with it.

What an episode, you could really tell how painful it’s been for the guy to go that garage and Jonny is just like a mate coming round getting stuck in, brilliant.

Wonderful! When I went to kindergarten between 1971 and 1974, there was a BMW Isetta (out of duty) in the patio. Sometimes, the kindergarten teacher (or superior Sister Ausonja herself) opened the front door, so we could play in it. This was the best that I can remember: being alone in «my» car, doing something with the steering wheel and driving around in my phantasie world. We did grow up on a very busy road but without any car. We did have only some bicycles and handcarts. But we did survive... Whenever I see an Isetta, this comes into my mind. Childhood... Jonny: what I really appreciate is the silence of your filming. No stress, no yelling, no artificial extra show. Two cameras, different angles of view, good light that is not too bright and makes a warm atmosphere. I'm within the story, that's what I feel. Good work!

Utterly worth the wait and far more desirable than any new car.

Dear Jonny. I think these might be my favorite category of films you do. These stories (eg the volvo and this ) about now departed enthusiasts are touching and thought provoking ! These folks continue to represent the antithesis of the throwaway culture. Thanks.

Top quality content this is. None of that shouty fast-paced nonsense you get on tv (and on RU-vid). Good stuff. Dean seems like a nice chap by the way. Cheers from one of you Patreon supporters.
