I had an issue with a "new to me" boat with leaky hydraulic seals. I had never attempted this repair before and studied your videos all winter long. I bought the G2 for this product along with all the other tools I needed. The product and your videos helped me complete this project. It went perfect and my steering is better than ever. Thanks for creating a great product, and for sharing your knowledge and experience on how to tackle it. 5 stars.

Want to say thank you for making a great product. I used this to flush the old fluid out of my Baystar steering so that I could install an autopilot pump, then used this to re-fill the system with fresh fluid and bleed. It worked perfectly to bleed all of the air out of the system and all of the components seem to be of good quality. NOTE: In the product manual it says to not use this with an autopilot. I did NOT run the autopilot pump with the bleed screws open, and do not recommend doing this. Close the bleed screws on both sides of the cylinder, run the pump back and forth to purge air from the pump, open the bleed screws again, and finish bleeding the system.

So I followed this and ny system came out pretty good. I locked the control rod a little different than you did. I dobt like claming down on an actuator rod so I used an idea from my military experience. I used downlocks on aircraft to prevent speed brakes from closing and landing gear from collasping. I took a 3/4 piece if pvc, cut out a slot so the pvc would slide over the actuator arm , put a shop rag over the arm and the pvc lock clipped ib place. Imade the pvc piece long enough to cover the whole rod when the motor was pused to the stops.

I worked commercial aviation for 30 years, used lockout tools just as you described, I'll probably do same. Ya vise grips on an actuator rod despite plastic and rags was cringing, effective but cringing just the same. Very thorough video thanks

I've watched your video probably a dozen times. I was thinking instead of using a short PEX tube with Vise-grip, what if you used a full length piece that would stop all movement. No plies needed. As you state, rod will be ruined even if dropping tool on rod. Great video, helps to understand the entire system more.

Sorry for ridiculously late reply. I agree, your idea is better. It is very easy to damage the steering piston rod. Pex cut to length is a good clean solution.

My brand new pontoon (24 ft with a 200 HP, 3500 lbs ) Steering is very hard, even at low speed. At speeds it is half turn at a time with both arms. Dealer says hes seen this before and the problem is low or no hydraulic fluid. He's sending me some fluid and I ordered your kit. But wouldn't low or no hydraulic fluid symptom be having to turn the wheel 20 times to make a turn and not hard steering?

Dude not only are you a great mechanic, you are an awesome engineer. Do you come up with all of these tools on your own? I do fiberglass and gelcoat only, and I never touch an outboard unless its mine, and I will research and watch RU-vid to troubleshoot my own engines. Unless I am completely stumped or cant figure it out after HOURS, Im doing it all myself. I have a few of your tools now, and I will be getting this next. I have recently been doing a ton of work to an 03 200 ox66 and I had to do the oil seals on driveshaft, shift shaft and the prop shaft, used all your tools. Had to do a seastar fill and bleed for a new install I did about a year back and used your fill system, now I will be buying this set in order to empty, redo seals and refill my own seastar on a 1987 Mako 231 I am restoring for myself. It's impressive that you have invented so many usefull tools and they are very reasonably priced.

@@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 For sure, especially now adays with RU-vid, internet forums, etc. You can find info on how to do anything. Of course there are sometimes that trying to do something yourself can cause more issues but that is rare! I gotta say, not much feels better than researching, fixing and then everything running the way it should instead of taking it to someone. I just had to do a complete overhaul on a ox66 that had sat for a long time and finally I got it running like a champ. It feels great to hear it run well and now I trust it to either sell it for repower or might even keep it on the boat for a few months and give her a run. I paid roughly 350 for parts on everything I did and if I took it to even a buddy I would had to pay around 2500 in labor but instead I got to learn something new and saved a fortune.

Hi Wayne, I would connect up both ends of the cylinder attachment to the bleeders and pull a sample of fluid. If its contaminated, I would flush and replace and bleed. Really its a judgment call though. Alot of people prefer to just flush the old stuff out and replace anytime they are doing service on the steering system

QUESTION: One of the hydraulic steering hoses somehow got pinched and created a massive leak. Can the bad spot be cut out and a compression type fitting be inserted to make a repair and still hold the PSI???
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 2 года назад
John, Sorry for late reply. If one of the main steering hoses is leaking, in theory it can be cut back and SeaStar makes a fitting that can be threaded onto the end of a SeaStar hose that will mate up with the hose fittings on the cylinder and it will hold pressure. The problem is that this fitting almost as expensive as a new hose, is not easy to find, likely have to go through a SeaStar dealer, and usually only installed by a SeaStar authorized tech because if improperly installed, the fitting and the section of hose it was attached to are trash.

Will this system work or Sea Star system with the Sea Star Power Assist (part # PA 1200-2)?
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 2 года назад
Technically it will work with power assist, but it can add some time to the job. We usually recommend upgrade to Bubble Purge Pro SC because it is dramatically faster and, by venting air out of the system at the cylinder as opposed to pushing the air back through one of the steering hoses, passing by all inline pumps along the way en route to the helm reservoir where it vents out, reduces the risk of re-introducing air to a previously purge and primed Power Assist or Auto Pilot pump.

I did get the air out of the cylinder and helm. It feels ok. However, the steering wheel and power knob are not positioned the way I would like, off by about 150 degrees. How can I reposition the wheel? I thought about connecting the port and starboard bleeder valves with a line full of fluid and then rotating the wheel while holding the motor. Any thoughts? Thanks
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
Hi Paul, It's usually no problem to set the wheel where ever you want. Set the motor pointed straight, attach the cylinder attachment (fill the attachment with fluid first, or you will put air back into the steering cylinde), open the bleed valves and you should be able to align the wheel any where you want it, with the motor pointed straight forward. Occasionally the motor will move even with the bleeder valves open, so yes, someone may have to hold the motor steady. Once the alignment is done, close the bleed valves on the cylinder and you're all set.

Absolute the easiest way to change and purge sea star system
@davidr6610
@davidr6610 Год назад
Quick question. When my outboard is trimmed up-half way to fully - just before I get to lock on port and starboard sides my motor shakes and the steering wheel shakes also. It will go all the way to lock though. I ordered the kit and added fluid and bled the system and it seems to be working fine other than the shaking part. Is that normal with a motor trimmed up? Also, it takes five maybe 5.25 turns to fully turn the motor.
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
Everything sounds fairly normal based on your description. The steering system will behave differently when the motor is trimmed up because the hydraulics are pushing against considerably heavier load when the cylinder is off center. The number of turns is in the neighborhood, but I would consult the specs for your particular helm model just to be sure.

will this method/tool work with an autopilot pump?
@tylerholland2232
@tylerholland2232 3 года назад
Hi David, technically yes, the G2 Kit is compatible with SeaStar systems equipped autopilot, but not recommended. Not trying to upsell, but for SeaStar with autopilot I recommend one of the Bubble Purge Pro Kits. It is more efficient with systems with pumps in line and vents air out at the cylinder as opposed to routing air to the helm and passing air back by and through every pump and fitting along the way.
@ij4298
@ij4298 Год назад
Can you explain the reason for clamping the cylinder to prevent from moving? I thought it had to be able to move to force air/ fluid out of the system?
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
The main reason I clamped the cylinder down was to show a safe method for immobilizing the cylinder because in some cases if the cylinder is allowed to move all the way to port of starboard lock with bleed fittings attached to the bleeder valves, there is not enough clearance and the bleed fittings can come into contact with the lower engine cowling or the rigging. I did not do an adequate job of explaining this in the video.

why does my engine continue turning side to side even when I open the bleed fittings and the helm screw? Also, I can't turn the engine side to side by hand.
@tylerholland2232
@tylerholland2232 4 года назад
Hi Mike, it's normal for cylinder to move when turning the wheel, even with the bleeders open because the helm pump is usually able to build enough pressure to move the cylinder in bursts until the bleeders can catch up and let off the built up pressure. Being unable to move the motor by hand is a different set of questions. If you are unable to move the cylinder by hand when the bleeders are open, there can be one or more issues. One possible cause is corrosion build-up and solidified grease/debris combo causing the pilot tube to bind, and the other issue could be an obstruction inside the bleed fitting, although it is rare for the bleed fitting to remain obstructed for long if you turn the wheel with the bleeders open the pressure will often dislodge most obstructions.

@@tylerholland2232 Thanks for the quick response. One of the bleed fittings was completely clogged with what looked like salt build up. @outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 Месяц назад
I'm very late getting to your question and apologize for the delay. I'm guessing here, but sounds like you are referring to the hose fittings. On older cylinders the hose fittings are NPT thread and should only be turned counter clockwise, and then re tightened. On most SeaStar cylinder after about 2013 they started using ORB fittings which can be loosened and adjusted as needed to any position.

@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631

I apologize for the very late reply. We have not tested on European Market specific helms and cylinders. I would assume that the fittings and specifications would be the same, but I have not seen the European product in my shop, so I can not verify. We have sold numerous G2 Kits to buyers across Europe, and we have not received any feedback or complaint suggesting a problem with compatibility with SeaStar products sold in the European market to date.

@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 9 месяцев назад
Usually, the system performance will start to improve noticeably after about 20 minutes of turning the wheel in both directions, and yes, the bleed fittings can be a problem if they are not opened enough to too far open. Another issue that is common with the bleed fittings is that they can become obstructed with debris over time and any debris that has built up in the fittings will need to be cleared. Usually compressed air will clear any debris buildup very quickly. I hope you were able to wrap up this job successfully.

I prefer the closed loop system myself for most jobs. When we produced the original Bubble Purge Video demo for the Bubble Purge Gen 1 Kit, I got quite a bit of email from people who were curious if the kit was able to do a full system flush and if it was compatible with old school methods as well as SeaStar's recommended methods so we put this video out.

Why don't you vent the bottle?
@tylerholland2232
@tylerholland2232 3 года назад
I vent the bottle by cracking/holding the quick connects open slightly so the bottle can vent as needed for a couple seconds as we did at about 15:20 seconds in the video. I usually try not to puncture the bottle because if the bottle is punctured and there is new fluid remaining in the bottle when the job is done, I now have a containment issue with the remaining pristine fluid and a disposal issue with piece of useless plastic hazmat the I just created. The Bubble Purge Kits all create a pretty tight seal at the access points on the helm fill port and bleed valves on the cylinder. Once the helm, which is essentially a very powerful hand pump, is primed it will easily pull fluid out of the bottle as needed whether it is punctured or not, and normally the bottle is prevented from complete collapse by incoming air as it vents out of the helm.

Some Skeeters have a remote fluid fill on the console. It would look like a small black cap about the size of a Quarter that would be flush mounted into the console usually above the steering wheel. There are a ton of bass boats that use a remote fluid fill because of having to fit the helm pump into pretty tight spaces.
