Bubsy 3D. A video game considered to be the worst of all time by a lot of the same people who also parade LSD Dream Emulator, Yume Niki, and other surreal exploration as the best.

As someone who adores the bubsy series and especially bubsy 3d. Ive always found the art direction of 3d stunning because of the surrealism. Its no nice seeing someone talking about bubsy in a half positive light (even if you still dislike the series)

Thank you so much! I was really looking forward to getting a comment like this :) I'm genuinely curious as to how to how the fans see the art direction.

This is a masterclass in art on weird art and I absolutely loved that intro. There is something infinity captivating about bubsy 3D that ends the second I jump onto the first platform. I'm glad to see you find passion in the game because I do see the magic of it especially retrospectively as the style made a comeback. I enjoy the music because it reminds me of british street music made on fruity loops 😂

You are without a doubt one of my favorite youtubers. Your thoughts and impressions of games are almost identical to mine, and I love your ability to blend the surreal, ethereal, and unsettling with genuinely hilarious dry humor. It's a weird feeling, getting to enjoy these uncanny valley type areas in games, but it can also be very lonely and depressing, and having the humor there to lighten the mood strikes a perfect balance for me. The moment I saw you uploaded I knew the first thing I was doing once I got off work. Welcome back man. I hope to see much more from you in the future, you're still as phenomenal as you were before.

I think the only reason Bubsy 3D doesnt work is it wasnt trying to be one of the games that ended up in the "weirdcore" genre. It was trying to put Bubsy on the level of Super Mario 64.

I remember first seeing this game at a friend's house. I knew nothing of the game, he put it on to play it and show me it. My first impression seeing the game was "What the fuck? This game is weird" The music, the weird shapes and random colors, it was just weird. I never saw it as "That bad game" when first being exposed to it, but that "Weird ass, fever dream game."

I completely agree, I always liked how Busby 3D looked and how surreal and dream like everything was. It was just how cumbersome the controls are and how annoying Bubsy is that really killed this game from being a cult classic in the future I think.

This owned. I get what you mean. Bubsy definitely nails the weird almost vaporwave style, except it's old enough that to be legit. I still don't think that makes it fun to *play*, because the controls are just straight up...frustrating to use. But it's a cool world and setting to *experience* and *see*. Also love the uli cameo

i read magazines made of actual paper when i was younger- and even they would joke about how bad Bubsy 3D is. i only ever saw it as a very early, clunky, yet somewhat admirable (Tomb Raider doesn't look THAT much better, does it?) first attempt at making a 3D platformer. i mean it didn't like erase memory cards, or cause your PSX to catch fire.
@Ubersnuber

I get this, too. Like with Hitman 1 and 2. The maps feel naked and empty, but the atmospheric music furnishes it all with an atmosphere that I can't quite define. I was reminded of that in your GTA 3 video. Bubsy 3D has some of that, too. And it cemented its own little spot in my head after the ulillillia walkthroughs. But it's always just out of my reach to define it properly. Feelings can be obscure that way.

Well well well, the guy who made that really cool Mortal Kombat open world video is back again. Happy to see you again, with another quality video. #1: I see where you're coming from. There's something about the world in Bubsy 3D (not BUNDY 3D autocorrect, Jesus Christ) that's uniquely peculiar that, if channeled into a work intentionally, could be very effective. The distorted nightmare world of Bubsy 3D is kinda neat, actually. #2: I recognize TenNapel, as the Nazi (because yes, the guy who made Earthworm Jim and The Neverhood is a theocratic fascist) and of course Tony Tarantella, but who's the Rapist? I didn't recognize him from the picture.

I played Bubsy 3D several times and it isn't that bad. For the 90's it was the only game for PS1 which was 3D openworld platformer. The controlls aren't that good cuz Bubsy's turning sensitivity isn't the best. The controlls (as many youtubers say) are the worst because Bubsy is using 'tank controlls' but it was the only way how to control Bubsy in 1996 because the first PS1 controller with analog sticks was made in 1998. In my point of view is Bubsy 3D a great game. Sometimes better than Crash Bandicoot.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who finally got around to playing bubsy 3D and didn’t hate it, I mean how could I? Games release every single day on steam or gamejolt and are sometimes worse, uglier, more janky, the works. Not to mention games like Cruelty Squad where the soul purpose is to be disgusting to look at and hard to play, it’s literally the bubsy 3D of fps games lmao. I do kinda appreciate how this game looks tho, it has a very unique style for its time, intentional or not. If you look at the other games in the series, the art style is SO bland, all the characters are generic looking would be looney toons, and all the levels are trying so hard to be sonic. Whilst bubsy 3D has nothing that comes as close to it, despite Mario 64 also having a sense of abstract surrealism, “but hey at least mario 64 is textured!!”

There is a quality of early 3D games that I don't feel can ever be properly matched purely because of the abstract/ eeriness of them is by pure accident. It's not that modern recreations can't capture this, there are some modern games imitating this era that pull off this feeling quite well, but to me, nothing can quite match the early 3D days when no one knew what they were doing, tried their best, and accidently made artistic masterpieces that are absolutely abhorrent games, but still have plenty of qualities to appreciate outside of that. Sidenote, really enjoy the maturing of your content. I personally think most of your old videos hold up well, but I enjoy your modern presentation and editing style much more. Or maybe I'm biased because the topics of dissociative eeriness appeals to me more lol. It's genuinely an interesting topic that is fairly common to be interested in, but I think you have a much more unique perspective and really see the art in everything, so to speak (which yes, means most people will see you as a weirdo, but I really think it can be a compliment sometimes) Also have you heard of Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Retrospective?
@nonsensicalfox

@@diydylana3151 The PS1 really was the most perfect horror game machine ever made. The vertices snapping and affine texture mapping do so much to make things feel unnatural, almost like environment you’re in is pulsating and wriggling flesh, or some poor alien recreation of what it should be. Obviously works amazing for the first Silent Hill, but even non-horror games can really feel unsettling because of it, especially if a novice sound designer with no idea how to do proper foley is involved.
