I like Sonic. Bubsy wanted to be Sonic. Bubsy ain't Sonic. A fan donated the first game to me, so I'm using that as an excuse to look at the entire series, from the first game to 3D on the Playstation.
Contrary to popular belief, cats are not immune to fall damage; they can hurt themselves, and even die. Yeah, sure, it often involves falling from 7+ stories, or under 30 centimetres or so, but still - cats can, and will, become injured from falls; they're just better at handling them due to lacking a collarbone and having a very flexible spine.
He also tried to tell him not to screw up again... ahh, well, they didn't screw up quite as bad as Bubsy 3D, but they did screw up in other ways. Like, even though it controls decently, it still plays in a very basic way. It's probably shorter than a Mega Man game with much satisfaction.
Falling damage in platformers is nothing new; in Donkey Kong if Mario falls from too high he will die. And in some games of Action 52 the player will also die if he falls from too high.... Though maybe it was unintentional to have fall damage in Action 52.... Aaaaand there's fall damage in Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine...... My opinion is that fall damage in 3D platformers is fine, but in 2D platformers it's just dumb...
Sterling Muse In what games? Was it the first two? I haven't played any of them personally, but I do remember James & Mike playing Fractured Furry Tales on the Jaguar, and I believe he had 9 lives in that game.
Sterling Muse Oh, my bad. I wasn't sure if you were joking or not actually. I was like "Alright, now if he's making a joke that I'm just not picking up on, I'm going to feel really dumb." Haha :P
He shouldn't be a thing, he's only back because Crash came back in the N.sane trilogy and someone had the idea to try bubsy, haha. NO this cat needs to die instead of being used for a quick cash grab.
ThunderGamer if you watch the trailer they clearly have learned nothing. They arent even trying to sell themselves ironically. It's jist a quick cashgrab because they know let's player and reviewer will be all over it
Fun fact: the end of the Bubsy series isn't even a good conclusión, not because it sucks (which it does), but because of what happens. According to TVTropes you have to 100% the game to get the true ending... but here's the thing: Bubsy builds a rocket with the collectibles and, if you don't get everything, it fails to reach the Woolies' ship, but if you do 100% it goes too fast and ends on a time warp, sending Bubsy to the prehistoric era, thus the Woolies win. Yeah...
***** I think someone did though, but all they've done with it is reléase the existing Bubsy games on Steam. It's a bit sad that devs still want to claim they were rushed into 3D when the big 3D mascots had made the jump whilst under development.
I hope so. bubsy should stay dead, on that note who wanted to revie one of the worst thing in exsistance instead of a good old series such as chrono trigger, SolatoRobo, earth bound, Megaman, and other classic good series
Fun Fact: the developers of Bubsy 3D, Eidetic are still around, though they are now known as Sony Bend Studio. Yes, the same people who made Syphon Filter, Resistance Retribution, and Uncharted Golden Abyss made this... piece of programming. I know you had to start somewhere but wow...
Dude, your uncle is the man! I'd actually love to see a video with you and him together or something because, whether he realizes it or not, he's done a lot for the channel.
VonFirflirch Oh yeah! I totally forgot about that. Just checked back and saw him. He really does seem like a cool guy. I meant more like join Johnny in a review or something. Maybe in a similar fashion to when Johnny reviewed the PlayStation.
"This is what you present as a mid term project for a 3d class. Your FIRST 3d class." "This is WRONG on so many levels." 'a quality that's so horrendously awful it has to be played to be believed." Nah, he gave it what it deserved.
Wait, if Bubsy has 9 lives, and he died in the 90's, then that means he only has 8 lives left. I think the fact that he made a return is a good thing, because now his life span has been cut down.
To be honest, this comment isn't mine. I saw it on some video. And it's not exact. "Bubsy, he can barely move. Bubsy, he's got no attitude. Bubsy, he's the weakest thing aliiiiive!".
You know, re-watching this now when BUBSY HAS A NEW GAME BEING DEVELOPED, NO I'M NOT KIDDING, is really, REALLY strange, like a old demon has resurfaced in gaming.
***** It's not about quality (Which in my case, I think both are good, Johnny is better in contextual humour and reviewing games, but Jontron is funnier in every other way and he has production values), it's about the fact that Jontron doesn't do collab reviews and that Johnny is like, what, a million subscribers below him?
"during the process of reaching that bizarre inverted nirvana, it managed to achieve a quality that is so horrendously awful that it needs to be played to be believed" Good sir, you have earned yourself a subscriber.
Johnny should definitely do that 90's platformers marathon, because those were just attempts to cash-in. Bubsy was something they threw at the wall and tried to make it stick. The first two games weren't masterpieces, but were passable at least, then they tried their hardest to make Bubsy stay, from ports to other consoles to an attempt to make a cartoon. They really tried to push this thing down the public's throat. I hope gaming companies learned from that example, we don't need anything like Bubsy 3D anymore.
xy394 I honestly think that Sonic already is a Bubsy, I always had problems with Sonic because of Sega's childish way of competing with Nintendo (thus creating the console wars that dominate RU-vid comment sections) so to me Sonic was always trying to be cool, it became evident with Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 (especially with the soundtracks), they were just trying to be popular rather than good. And Sega's habit to keep rushing games is not making it any easier, especially since the last Sonic console game was considered one of the worst games ever made and in 2014 that is quite an achievement.
I really don't look at Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric as a game in general. So to me the last actual main series Sonic game is Lost World. Also, comparing Sonic to Bubsy is a huge insult. Sonic being 'cool' is a part of his character and it's what made him so appealing and successful back then. These animal mascot platformers wanted to be the next Sonic but failed miserably (like Awesome Possum and Bubsy for example).
I remember playing the Sega Genesis back when I was a little kid. I was born in 1999, it was my mom's Genesis. Me being obsessed over Sonic, I discovered the 1st and 2nd Bubsy games. And they were actually good in my opinion. He moved fast like Sonic, and although the controls were mediocre, to put it lightly, I liked the style, along with the high jumps and gliding. Plus, I know it sounds absurd, but dying was kind of fun. The ways Bundy could die, and the way he reacted to death was hilarious! He had a motor mouth on him too, but he was funny little fucker, I'll applaud him for that. Only major issues I had were the camera view which led to the countless frustrating (but funny) deaths, and the fact he was so fragile and he seemed to be made of fucking glass. Bundy 2 improved by giving you 3 hit points, but that's about it. I liked Bubsy, he was funny, a blast to control with his slippery and uncoordinated movements, and the levels were beautiful in my opinion. I see some problems with the dastardly bobcat, for sure, especially since I'm an adult who can recognize those flaws, but I don't think Bubsy deserves all the hate that he gets. I never even knew there was a Bubsy game on the Atari Jaguar, so I may need to see if I can let my cousin loan me his. But Bubsy 3D, oh dear God, that game, I will not deny, is a a complete price if shit that the developers should be ashamed of. I hate that game so fucking much, they completely murdered Bubsy! I haven't played The Woolies Strike Back, and I heard there is another new one coming soon. I'll play those eventually plus Bubsy 3.
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?! YOU RUINED MY LIFE BUBSY! YOU MADE ME GO INSANE AS A FUCKING KID! AND THE 3D GAME ON THE PS1! DO *NOT* EVEN GET ME FUCKING STARTED!!!!!
You know what amazes me is Bubsy's catchphrase. With all the cat puns going around they should have made it "What could PAWS-ibly go wrong?!" Ahahahahahaha I depressed myself.
Who else is starting to feel like Johnny's uncle is their uncle as well? His frequent contibutuions are really welcome and helps support this channel which helps us see some more video reviews!
*_Bubsy Story:_* The year is 2015. I had moved apartments and my neighbors were very nice people. They had my wife and I over for dinner, and in the living room their kids were playing videogames. Well, video game. It was Bubsy 3d. I was shocked. The kids were under ten and they didn't know any better. They never made it out of the first stage. They laughed hollow laughs and smiled wooden smiles. My stomach lurched. So I says to the guy, I says "Jimmy, dude, duder, duderino, don't you have any other games for these kids to play?". He says, "Oh, yeah I do have one old game, but it's 2d, this one is better." "What do you have?", I say. It was Super Mario World everybody. They couldn't get it to work. So I -clean- blow into the cart, and pop it in. I saw joy in their faces friends; *real* joy. I showed the kids the ropes and handed the controller over, and watched them laugh, their heads spinning with glee. If I died today I'd die happy, knowing what could've been. Denying those poor children Mario for Bubsy was tantamount to abuse in my eyes because I know what _could have happened._ Bubsy would have robbed them of an appreciation for games, and a childhood. They would have ended up in a gutter, selling themselves for the next hit of Bubsy 3d. It is all of our responsibility to teach the children, to guide them in the right direction. I never saw much of Jim after that, but my conscience is clear. Is yours? If you see a child with only Bubsy 3d to play, I implore you, *call the police.*
Gotta say Johnny, I'm loving your videos. You give credit where credit is due, and you certainly put in the effort to complete the games... most of the time... good stuff!
no need to apologize Johnny, it is perfectly fine for a video to take a little longer. finding one of your videos in my subscription box is always a real treat. keep it going
i'm being honest when i say that i think i could have programmed a better game than bubsy 3D. i mean seriously the only effort they put into this game was having someone make bubsy animated. other than that, there isn't really a single texture. gold x award my ass... still better than sonic 06
I'm sorry, but that's too much of an insult to even a dirt bag like Sonic 06. At least Sonic 06 had textures and looked something close to a completed game. In fact compared to this trite shite known as Bubsy 3D, Sonic 06 _is_ a completed game. Bubsy 3D is on a whole new level of low. ....I just defended Sonic 06...I...I need to go lie down now....
***** well i was half kidding. i mean it's 100x more broken. it's really just a would you rather play a really bland game made with no effort at all, or a good game in concept, that just has terrible level design, story, and is just broken. this came up in their brainscratch majora's mask commentary and for some reason john and ryan would rather play a frustrating game than a boring game...
9:38 "Uncle, thank you so much for the loan so I could look at the next Bubsy game." Isn't this like saying "thanks for loaning me your Ferrari so I could do the grocery shopping?"
Oh my god The Game Theorist channel just gave a shout out for you man. You are now getting recognize by bigger youtube channels. Holy Shit this is Awesome!
Actually, Bubsy 3D entered development before Mario 64 was announced and they really hoped it would be the game to revolutionize the genre, when Mario 64 was announced the developers realized they were screwed and the director actually tried to get the company to let them start over and develop it to be more like that game but they were already going through financial troubles at that point and couldn't afford to scrap everything and start from scratch so they had to finish and release the game as it was.
I loved the manual for Bubsy II! I don't know why I had that game for SNES but it was one of few games I had as a kid, I played the heck out of it. Great video, thanks!
@@Kimarnic Not at all. There's a ton of unpredictable glitches, a poorly-written scenario, mediocre voice acting, wonky controls, a bleak and unappealing art-style, cheap and boring bosses, lots of long loading screens, and flawed level-design. The only good aspect of this game is the soundtrack.
Dear Johnny, I'm catching up on your backlog of videos and love the channel. I loved your reaction to Cybermorph on the Atari Jaguar. Thank you for some real laughter during tough times.
I don't think nintendo would go out of their way to borrow someone else's character for smash bros. just as a joke. Seems kind of pointless, especially since virtually everybody would be unhappy with it
I understand what you guys are saying about it being bad and everyone would be mad, but come on Bubsy in Smash, in my opinion that's in the so bad it's good group
