After starring in what was considered one of the worst games ever made, Bubsy ended his career for 21 years. What happened? Is Bubsy 3D even REALLY that bad? SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: / nitrorad / nitroradofficial / nitrorad
Since a lot of people ask what the song from the beginning is, it's from Killer Instinct. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t5ebAvks9ig.html
Thank you for reviewing this game without quitting halfway through or getting obnoxiously angry for comedic effect, no one seems to take a level-headed approach when talking about this game. There were lots of things you brought up that I didn't even know about because other reviewers just lumped under "this game is bad lol," so I appreciate it. Also, you did a nice job on that makeup. Often times when I see the bags under the eyes people take it from 1 to 100 in like three shots, but you paced it out so that you had to be paying attention to even notice the progression in the first place.
TheRPGirl I agree! Nitro really is a great reviewer, it’s hard to put into words how much I appreciate the amount of research and time he puts into these reviews, the amount of passion is unmatched.
Virtual Insanity The amount of time and effort that goes into these videos is really great. And yet with all that research under his belt he still doesn't sound like a professional or a know-it-all (in the best way possible). I think that's why I like Nitro so much. His reviews are like if your best friend just beat a game and started telling you their genuine thoughts on it.
I'll be honest, I love AVGN, but he has been outmatched since his golden age. I still watch his current stuff which definitely shows his improvements, and occasionally visit his older stuff, but there is a lot more talent to choose from nowadays, and I think Nitro Rad is a great example of that. He's fun, he's witty, and the attention to detail he gives each game he reviews is tenouttaten, and in more tactful phrasing, he's relatable rather than opressively professional like someone from IGN, and not overly obnoxious like JonTron's review. I love JonTron, but he's one of the many who gave up early, where Nitro Rad actually pushed to the end of Bubsy 3D for us plebs to enjoy his misery, as well as the ass that is the rest of the game. If you end up reading this Nitro, keep up the good work man, you are one of a kind. :) Edit: Not to mention, a scholar and a saint.
To be fair to Jon, it was one of his earlier reviews. His character wasn’t as established as it is today. Plus he was also playing the first two games with the same concept of play the first and second level, Rage quitting, and moving on to the next game.
The only good thing to me about Bubsy 3D is probably the aesthetic of the levels. I dunno. I love super-low-poly simple stuff and it's pleasing to look at even if it's lazy as fuck, not practical and looks like a game in alpha stages.
You say this as a joke, but the leader of the dev team for Bubsy 3D actually thinks Bubsy 3D isn't as bad as everyone says it is and has plenty of quotes similar to that.
Thankfully, Bubsy 4D broke the series trend by being so good that it exists on an entirely new plane of existence that us mere mortals cannot comprehend.
And, due to some time/space shenanigans, it went back in time and became Cthulhu. It's not so _horrifying_ you go insane, it's so amazingly _good_ you can't believe it even exists and _that_ makes you go insane. ... Still not a good thing for a series to be known for.
I love how James gets more and more disheveled looking as he continues to review the game. It's pretty subtle too. You might not even notice it at first.
You are the only reviewer who actually showed the entirety of Bubsy 3D from start to finish I know of. First off, massive respect, and secondly, why are you doing this to yourself?
I know this is an old video, but major props for calling the voice DIRECTION bad and not the actress herself. That was impressive, and I was also very impressed by you finding the exact words that led to the fake positive review on the cover!
@@JNJNRobin1337 It feels like this has been changing significantly as of late, at least among content creators. People are being much more mindful of what it is they’re actually criticizing now
@@thatitalianlameguy2235 even the great Rob Paulsen couldn't make Bubs sound tolerable in the cartoon. the script they gave these actors is exactly how nitro describes as tthrowing darts hoping SOMETHING lands and the direction is just all around bad.
I'm really glad I watched this video, most people that review this game don't even hit on some of the stuff you talked about, like this is actually the first time I found out this game has bosses? Who knew.
My childhood memory of this game is renting it from a blockbuster and getting home and it being too scratched to play and being all bummed out about it, years later as an adult I found out that I had been saved some serious trauma.
Squigin A similar thing happened when I rented Ghostbusters for NES as a kid. The game couldn't get past the title screen. Many years later, I saw the AVGN's review.
If you think about it, the true ending is actually a great ending! Bubsy is trapped in the Jurassic era and poor sales prevented his escape via a direct sequel. Therefore, he's been rotting there for the better part of 2 decades and counting with no hope of escape. It's a great ending! I wouldn't have it any other way.
Then again there's a reason why The Woolies Strike Back retconned that ending. Even the new people knew that ending was bonkers for all the wrong reasons.
Takeshi Kujo they were probably made entirely of America’s got talent judges because the only thing this game has going for it is a sad backstory. Like, we’ve all been in that situation, we think we’re doing something new and original only to discover that you have a much better competitor that overshadows you in every way, and if There’s anything judges like it’s a sad backstory. Still doesn’t make it good though. It’s like if big rigs was all the homeless lone developer could code before they died of cancer. It’d still be a shit game either way.
PSEXTREME is liquid shit. They praised all manner of shitty games. Seriously, go and look at old shitty PSX games or coverage of PSX games, or try and find crappy games, you'll find a PSXtreme quote, when no other magazine will. IIRC they also gave Bug Riders a good review. Unfortunately most people don't know how shittacular they were, apart form popping up on bad games boxes in quotes, or in other magazines, with good quotes and stamps of approval on bad games. Their true shittiness is forever lost in time.
When people say the bubsy team should of known what to do after mario but devs cant change their game a week before it comes out back then, it wasnt like steam updates.
@@richardgibson8403 It damages sales, publishers are not happy, they have to communicate it to investors, and strores. It was easier to publish the game the way it was, but they must've realized it was doomed from the moment Mario 64 was revealed.
@@NegiWhite Something that is important to note is as goofy as it sounds looking at this, their goal was a bit different then other platformers. Because their know how of 3D was limited (due to having no prior experience with controls or tools for drawing environments in 3D) their goal was to make it the highest resolution possible and try their best to work from there. Unfortunately in doing so, they took most of the memory that should've been dedicated to other real time tasks, and it ended up hurting the project throughout the cycle. That sounds easy to rectify, but in reality when you're talking about having to learn on the fly a new system, console, etc. and then release the game slightly over a year after the original NA release of the console (while also working on a difficult to develop for Saturn version they ultimately canned) it makes sense why it came out the way it did. Accolade refused to budge on that release date and it hurt the game. There is one benefit though. Often we hear about "if we had another crack at it" or "the lessons we learned..." in terms of optimistic positivity towards failed projects. But in Bubsys case, they actually did, and its crazy to think the team that made Siphon Filter learned so much from a game so critically panned after its release. Small comment for those interested; some designers on the team HATED bubsy with a passion and made fun of him snarkily as they did their work back in those days prior to 3D.
I really like how this review was done. It’s not the typical “haha game BAD” Bubsy 3D review, I actually learned a lot I didn’t know about the game, and it managed to stay funny throughout. Also the progressive eyebags throughout was really good.
That's the wonder of Nitro Rad. He does poke fun at the games he reviews, but he also keeps his videos very informative. That's why they're so enjoyable. :D
Bullshit. No one can come back from this catastrophe. This is one of those things that drives a man to drink, to find Jesus at the bottom of a bottle. No way, man. You're fucking with me.
The way Nitro Rad reviews bad games is that it could be a great game if you remove the flaws. And Nitro Rad genuinely hates this game. That's something that almost never happens on this channel and that's how you know this is a terrible game.
Some of the worst level design I've ever seen in a 3D platform game. There's a reason why they made platforming so easy in mario. 3D platform games cant be fun if they are way too hard to DO the platforming.
DrawnSimplistic same as Blinx, Klonoa, glitch,(metal arms protagonist) and other never have a another game but Bubsy had a new game...for some reasons.... I think we should make theme a meme
Wait I just realized. When you fire the atoms at enemies, you're firing an atom at 'em. This game stinks but there's good puns if you squint really hard.
Oh boy, if in-depth analysis of Bubsy 3D is what you want, I suggest you look up Ulillillia. He is a *big* fan of Bubsy and made some videos exploring this game.
To think, when Caddicarus got to Stage 2 on Bubsy 3D he asked "Has man ever reached this point in the universe before?" And a year later, Nitro made it to the ending. That's a real *accolade.*
Amazing how you physically look WORSE after completing it compared to how you look in the beginning of the video. I've gone down that road myself, it's a complete shitstorm from start to finish and ending has no payoff, even with the supposed "good" ending. Now for god sakes, get some sleep! You deserve it. You've ventured into terrority very few gamers ever dare to tread :)
It's like completing Donkey Kong 64, but instead of gamer cred you've got nothing left but a hollow shell of yourself and a new appreciation for a hole through your head
It's amazing to think the developer who made this train wreck, would later create the Syphon Filter Series, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Resistance: Retribution, and Days Gone, that's a hell of a redemption arc.
Gonna be honest, I kinda felt sorry for you in the end, lol. This really does look like one of the worst games of all time, it's not even bad in the way where you can have fun because of how bad it is, it just looks frustrating. I have a lot of respect for you for actually playing through the entire game though to give a proper review unlike most reviewers. Also, from what I've heard, Bubsy 3D was originally supposed to be a Sega 32X game, which explains the lack of textures in the graphics. They still could've updated the graphics when releasing it on PS1, though.
I think in hindsight this game just proves how much of a miracle Super Mario 64 is. They got so much right when flying completely blind, doing something that nobody else had done before. Even now, with 25 years of experience, 3D platformers are pretty rare events in gaming, because they are devilishly difficult to make - indeed, surprisingly few developers have ever topped that initial offering in 1996.
I broke one of the clips off of it entirely, but I had a FMA scroll in my closet that hasn't been hung up for years, so I took a clip off of that and replaced it.
Honestly, the part about that EGM quote that stings the most isn't the fact that it was twisted to hell, but rather the fact that it didn't _have_ to be - "Bubsy 3D climbs back to the top of the yarn ball. Gamers looking for 3-D action should check it out!" would've sufficed perfectly for a quote on the front of the box.
According to Matt McMuscles video on Bubsy 3D, the interesting multiplayer did end up influencing Syphon Filter's multiplayer! Also, the idea of shooting collectables ended up being used to great effect in Pac-Man World (at least in the Re-Pac version) It's really cool how even the worst of games can have some interesting ideas that could influence other games Except maybe The Great Quest xP
WHAT!!???? SPENPIE NOTICE ME!! but you are you very welcome and there was a tell near one of the secret switches is a room with 4 coloured turrets that don't shoot, just did not show it as i knew the code.
yer it was quite a shock when i was told to watch it and i saw that, it was less a senpie noticed me and wait what, wait what is this real l need to sit here for like a hour to let it sink in XD
Fun fact: The developer of this game was purchased by Sony Interactive Entertainment in the late 1990s and was renamed to Bend Studio. This studio would go on to develop the Siphon Filter series for the PS1 and PS2, Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the PS Vita, and are currently developing Days Gone for the PS4.
Other Bubsy games: What can pawssibly go wrong? This one: What can pawssibly go right? The graphics are atrocious, but the worst idea is having to turn around to move. When you make MOVING hard, nothing else can be said.
Oh god, I would rather be fucked in the asshole with a sandpaper dildo laced with spikes and nails being held by a serial killer/rapist, than to ever touch that piece of shit. There are homeless people living in mud and dirt and rotting waste, that are less filthier than that tremendous pile of poop nuggets!
It's pretty wild how the Bubsy 3D people went on to make the Syphon Filter series and Days Gone. Sometimes there's a lot of talent who were too ambitious for what they were trying to create and that's probably the case for Bubsy 3D.
As a poor, dumb child, I received this as a gift. A new game! I hated it. But, as a poor kid, I didn't have a lot of choices, and I had completed the rest of my game library, so I stuck through it and learned the quirks and ups and downs. After much screaming, frustration, anger, blodd, sweat, and tears. I not only beat the game... I completed it 100%. All collectables, high score, etc. I hate myself
It seems like they were working with inferior technology and maybe even rushed it to come out very soon after crash and Mario. I don't know much about the dev but I cant imagine Bubsy was raking in the dough. Probably had a craptacular budget
12:53 what we observe is one the effects of stress induced by playing Bubsy 3D. It can make people confuse question mark blocks with exclamation mark blocks.
Just as a quick note here - I finished up the captions for this video, so they should be up soon after the people in charge review them. It was a pretty annoying process trying to time everything, but like any project, it's always worth it in the end. 😊💞
I remember getting this game because the video store around the corner from my house, was going out of business, and so my mom bought a good amount of stuff. I was probably around 8, and could never get past level 2... I felt like a failure for years, but I'm so glad it was just a shit game, and not me. Thank you.
After seeing Mario64 and Crash the main Dev of Bubsy 3D himself wanted to redo the complete game but the publishers wouldn't let him so he left it as is and said "F** it"
To be fair if he redid it there wasn't much worse he could have done. If anything at least a few things mario and crash did would have rubbed off an helped it not be as terrible as it was.
Well... at least the dev(s) have gone to better pastures like giving us the awesome Syhpon Filter games... which I have not seen any YT reviewer with PS1 overtones (Johnny vs., Caddicarus, NitroRad... really guys, stop blueballing us... you too patreon voters... jk, y'all are good.)
Fun fact : When the developers of Pac-Man World first showed their prototype to the President of Namco, it was so bad and felt so much like Bubsy 3D that almost the entire team was fired.
Oh my freaking wow. That Edward comparison was scarily accurate! Also, the idea of using collectibles as ammunition? Rayman Raving Rabbids DS gave it a try too. The result? Rayman punches as his default attack and uses Yellow Lums to do his Rayman 2 energy shots. Honestly, best execution of the idea that I've seen in a long standing series.
Fun fact: Lani Minella, the voice for Bubsy here, hated this game too. Bubsy is one of the few roles she regrets taking, and she even admits the direction she was given was to be shrill and annoying.
Yeah, I noticed that too. What got removed was a section in the voice actor bit where he talks about how the new voice actor for Bubsy might be Vic Mignogna, and compares the voice to another character Vic voiced. He might have deleted it for two reasons: one, it turned out to not be Vic at all, so the information would be inaccurate, and two, Vic apparently got embroiled in some controversy a while after this video came out, so maybe Nitro didn't want to give him any positive attention or something.
@@JTHMSqueeMrEffDBoyIn another comment he says he removed it when it turned out to be wrong, but he also says it was in a different video so maybe he was wrong. Nitro Rad has taken down a few videos due to people involved creating controversy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the latter reason is why.
Your's is the first Bubsy 3D review/retrospective that is played all the way through to the end! Mad respect for the endurance. So many people give up after the first few levels. :D
2:15 hehehehe get it? Because *Accolade* is the name of the company that made Bubsy...And their name is on the cover too..? Was that on purpose, James?
Kudos to being the most informative and fair review of Bubsy 3D. Excellent job. I don't know whether you deserve a pat on the back for the effort or some Panadol from this migraine-inducing game.
When Caddicarus (second time I talked about him I know) he had several other people appear in his review telling him to don't do it. I would do the same thing and tell you it's not worth it and it's never worth it, playing that game is a death sentence.
