One of the most remembered b-grade platformers from the N64. What is it about Glover that we just can't forget? SOCIAL MEDIA: / nitrorad / nitroradofficial / nitrorad Thumbnail render courtesy of: www.deviantart.com/nibroc-rock
Hedgehogs do indeed roll up into balls. However, they don't do it very often because they're afraid that inanimate gloves will hop on top of them and roll them around.
I've heard that they're also scared that they might start speeding out of control and accidentally stumble into an overweight madman's nefarious deeds.
I hear that hedgehogs are very adorable and friendly towards people, but they get aggressively racist towards italians. I may need to fact check that last statement
I've worked with the developer at Golden Mushroom and wanted to help with the marketing as that's my actual job. The "team" was one dude from Germany not understanding a bit about game development, law and project management. I think I still have his number
that anime weirdo And also, to those who don’t know who owns Glover these days, it’s owned by a company that likes to rerelease old games (both physically and digitally), and release new, but long lost games for old consoles, called Piko Interactive.
"However, hopes for a Glover 2 did occur in 2017!" *inhales excitedly* "Sadly, they didn't even have the proper trademark to make a full game." *exhales in disappointment, my poor heart in pieces*
I would honestly love to see it remade. It's such a novel and clever concept that stands out from your generic 32-bit collectathons. btw Piko Interactive (a company who actually owns the rights to Glover IP) has shown interest in finishing that Glover 2 prototype.
I was about to comment about this. I would play a remake! I couldn't get into this game as a kid and sold it, but that was mostly due to hardware limitation-related frustrations. I want to see this game with new graphics, polished physics, and a little more story to flesh out what the heck is going on.
Manipulating the codes within Glover is my favorite part of the game. Certain codes you can stall out making their effects permanent, and that's when the games gets really fun to mess with. Lots of weird stuff can happen and as a kid I absolutely loved it.
Reminds me of how Game Shark codes could permanently burn save files onto the disk or memory card with Gamecube games. Mini-Disc players; 1 step forwards, two steps back...
I love when people talking about Glover. Great childhood memories. Is it weird that I used to correlate the creepy hub world with Rock Bottom from SpongeBob? They were going to glove world afterall..
The bit with Nitro trying to not be himself and be an AVGN clone and failing at it spectacularly was amazing. You're just too legit for all that and I love it. Also, your Seinfeld impression is eerily spot-on.
I think James spent his earliest years actually embracing his inner AVGNitis by just LOOKING for things to complain about, like this jump in one of the Ty games that he supposedly couldn't make, but really it's not that big a deal.
Wonderfully scripted and paced as always, I think I might pick up the N64 version now! Also, a massive thanks for the shout-out, glad you like the logo intro!
I agree with your sentiment. Even if Glover 2 is never a thing, the concept is neat enough to try again. Glover seems like one of those games that just burst with initial inspiration, attempting to be something different in the new era of 3D gaming. Despite some of its failures, it still stands out to me on concept alone and I respected the attempt on the N64 version.
You're not the only one that checks all the options before playing, it's something I and alot of PC players do too, making sure to see every single possible setting and configuring it all to preference, is good. Cool vid btw
Glover PC's graphics were so weird because they expected you to use a Voodoo card for the better settings. Grab a Glide wrapper (which lets you use Glide API games with Nvidia or AMD instead of just Voodoo) and it should work.
It's so refreshing to see a positive review of Glover (the 64 version at least) as this game tends get a bad wrap. Also, compliments to your channel man! A lot of game review channels tend to be either long winded and lacking in...fun, or too jokey with little actual research done and are too unfocused. You strike an excellent balance between entertaining and informative.
Hey James, great video! Quick clarification/correction: "Hindu" is a religion whereas "Hindi" is a language spoken in India that is verbally similar to Urdu. At 09:38 you mispronounce "Hindi" as "Hindu". A common mistake and probably nobody cares, but just figured you should know. With over 300 comments already, you might miss this. Really enjoyed the video btw!
@@Sandlerverse I highly doubt it. It lioks nothing like Snake while the others resemble what they're based off of, and anyone who knew anything about Metal Gear knows it's nothing like that. My guess is it's a stereotypical action dude because they couldn't think of a third character to parody. So it fits Duke and Contra.
Well since we're in a time where remasters of 90's games are all over the place, we might get a Glover remaster. But then there would be the problem of introducing a realistic physics engine, which could make the game artificially more difficult.
I loved GLOVER back in the day on my N64. Heck, your review made me wanting to play it again... Damn. Personally, I consider this a small gem. Thanks, Nitro Rad - a good and thorough review, as always.
I remember seeing this game in every used game store in Sweden back in the days. I always seem to mix this game up with Tonic Trouble and always think Ubisoft made both. The burping and farting codes were pretty creative too. Great review as always!
I'm so glad to see you finally touch upon this game, this is honestly in my top five N64 platformers from my childhood, and it still shocks me to think that if the used game store I went to years, and years ago had Donkey Kong 64 in their stock, I wouldn't have ever played this game, or Pokemon Snap (Got both that day). The game's not perfect, I'm not so blinded by nostalgia that I can't see the problems with it, but I love the game's premise, what it executes so impressively given the hardware, and just what it aimed to do in general. On top of that, the character is adorable, and I will never be able to look at that glove with anything but fondness. I actually have the opposite feelings for the cancelled sequel, oddly enough. I absolutely hate it, and what it aimed to do. The sound effects when the characters spoke, the fact they made the other glove WANT to be evil like in the PlayStation version, which would bring into question why they'd even trust that glove to make anything anymore, the fact the world objects had big eyes slapped on them, it just felt like it wanted to be Banjo Kazooie, or any other RARE platformer other than it's own thing like the first game clearly went for. It derived so much from other sources that it forgot to add most of what they themselves made other than characters. Some mechanics looked like they'd work well in it, but I still dislike the sequel overall, and am personally glad THAT version of a sequel was canned. I just wish a new one took its' place.
Dude, It's ridiculous to think that it was almost 6 years ago that I began watching you, and now I'm watching you cover Glover. Just crazy man, love the content and keep it up.
yeah the few Glover fans seem really dedicated. I remember when there was a small movement to keep sending the Game Grumps copies of this game in hopes that they would finish their playthrough. It seems like a neat concept mostly just held back by technical limitations. Maybe it'll get a spiritual indie successor some day?
I really like how you spent the time to go and cover the PS2 Port alongside the N64. Really demonstrates how much effort you put into your videos. Keep it up man :)
This game was in a gaming mag I once had as a kid, and I read and reread it dozens of times, and never actually played it. THank you Nitro Rad, this is really awesome! I'm so glad I got to see what it was like.
speaking about the currency name, that is a neat fact. it comes from the Arabic word (غريب) like you stated and its pronounced as *GH*a-reeb with a thin gh sound in the beginning. cool vid as usual, Nitro! (Source: native Arabic dude.)
I love the comparisons between different game versions. It's definitely not as common to see such disparity between systems today so it's a nostalgic phenomenon.
So glad you covered this one. I love Glover even though I am aware of its faults. A huge part for this is thanks to Glovers charm and the whole idea itself. The soundtrack of this game is really stuck in my head. I'm especially fond of the music in World 1. You're not alone when it comes to checking all the options before starting a game. Something I really appreciate about your reviews is how you try engage games with a more postive outlook and stay fair at the same time. This becomes noticable around mid video when you talk about camera, controls and patience in particular. The frankensteins monster boss really is the worst. :D Never played the the PC and PS1 versions (owned like three copies of the N64 cartdrige though). Colors of the PS1 version are nice. I wished we could at least get some kind of high resolution re-release for current platforms. It kinda sucks to be stuck with the 50 HZ versions of older games since I live in europe. Never heard about this Glover trademark story. Sadly I don't see a sequel happening as well. Kinda surprised you didn't talk about the ending of the game but great job on the video nonetheless. : )
If I had the same amount of confidence as hasbro had when they made twice the amount of cartridges for glover thinking that *glover* would be that successful then I probably would've managed to ask out my crush.
Well dang, that was actually really great! It honestly caught me by surprise that you went out of your way to cover the PS1 and PC versions after giving so much time to the N64 version. I really enjoyed just how comprehensive this was, and...hell, I'm subscribing!
I have such fond memories of this review from five years ago, this was the very first one that lead me to your channel, and honestly it couldn't have been a more fitting start for me getting to know the guy who reviews weirder games with a more optimistic look on things. Thanks for being you.
And he *still* only got four fingers. I assume they changed the evil glove's backstory to tie into the planned sequel? The way you play around with the physics of different balls reminds me heavily of a little 2D indie platformer called "Within a Deep Forest"
This is the first video I've seen from you, and to say the least, it was very well put together and funny! I'm already subscribed and I can't wait to watch more videos you create!
Glover is one of my absolute favorite games. Glad to see this pop up in my RU-vid recs. I used to just go in and mess around with the game's physics and use the low gravity code all the time. I still have the low grav code permanently ingrained into my muscle memory. I still sometimes use variations on it for passwords... Great game. A little disappointed you didn't talk about the music though.
i played this game a lot when i was a little kid i didn’t get far though, but i played it a lot also your part where you said you have a habit out of checking out a video games options before you do anything else, i don’t find it that weird. i usually always do stuff like that. i like to check out how i can modify a video game to fit my preference before diving into it
2:15 TONKA. Thank you for reminding me of one of the first video games I have ever played. I feel like its a childhood gem I seemed to forget all about because of smelly adulthood responsibilities. Wow...
What is even weirder Nitro is in the unreleased Glover 2, that glove does the same thing in the PS1 intro. It is off putting that the normal glove is evil, but wants to be turned evil? The accident cutscene is much better. Edit: Oh he talks about it later in the video. My mistake.
The farting bird on the swing really brings back my childhood memories of this game lol. Still have my n64 and glover going to have to play it as I don’t think I ever beat it as a child.
The funny thing about the Glover 2 copyright kerfuffle is that the copyright owners (the people that own Glover, not Golden Mushroom) also has rereleased old games and unreleased ones, including that 40 winks n64 game that was kickstarted. I have no clue why they'd say no.
I have to thank you man! Not only for covering this game which I loved as a kid yet no one I knew he'd actually pleaded and there's not much online about it. But I also have to thank you for informing me about the save file issue. I never beat the game as a kid and I recently tried playing it again because I wanted to actually completed but I ended up giving up because twice my save data had been erased and I had assumed it was an issue N64. I think I'll try it again or copying my save data to all the other files every so often. I agree with you on so many points though. The bonus Frogger mini game in the first world is hell, and there are many frustrating points where I'm trying to do something and the ball ends up flying off the platform. Plus I'm quite impatient so this game is hard for me.
So, this is my first time watching your channel, and i have seen pretty much like 5 videos or so until now, and i have realised that for some reason, your skin looks very smooth and soft.
This is actually the first time i hear of this game and i was born in the 90s. You bring good points and criticisms in this. Actually makes me think they _should_ make a sequel. The little touch of gloversitting on the edge is a genuinly cute touch of Hat-kid proportions so having that in the old era is a real passionate touch.
I'll always have a super fondness for Glover (especially since it was the first video I ever made for RU-vid) and I think the only chance we'll EVER get at a sequel is from Piko since they actually DO have the rights to Glover 2 and do tend to released previously unreleased games as finished products, soooo...maybe? Y'know for all of the indie platformers that try to capture that gameplay feel of other classic retro platformers, I'm surprised that there don't seem to be any based on the mechanics behind Glover. I'd support that in a heart beat...and if they do exist I can't find them because yeah, Googling Glover is really hard to do. Awesome video, dude.
ah man this video reminds me of my favorite stage wario ware it has a unique set of platforms it is small witch keeps matches fast pace and prone for come backs
The story about your elementary school friend made me laugh like a little girl! Kind of shocked at the amount of care and effort that seemed to have gone in this game, the idle animations alone show more care and creativity than some games now!
@@zzcolby27 golly gee. I'm so sorry for ruining your day by saying thanks for my own minor bit of accomplishment. I'm so sorry that literally 5 seconds of your life was ruined by saying thanks. How dare I ruin a review about Glover for you. Thanks for teaching me to be a decent person like you. Never again will I add a small message on a comment ever again.
Guarantee you if James watched your AVGN knockoff bit/ your true embodiment of AVGN in your Sonic 06 video, he'd love them too! Really an underrated channel here, you always bring the best of both personality's for game reviewing.
