Its a classy and nostalgic hunting knife but the hollow grind makes it weak. Wait...Isnt that the same steel as the gerber strongarm has? Cant believe you pulled out the Glock to shoot the handle 😅👍

I think Bucks are heat treated harder which gives them better edge retention but a little less toughness. Remember a big part of toughness is simply the amount of steel present. Short, stumpy tips are stronger than thin hollow ground ones and thick wide knives are stronger than thin shallow ones.

@@DL-ij7tf Very true. This we have seen in many of these tests. The knives with the thick chubby tips survive the tips abuse. But can't penetrate the car hood. Though same steel the Strongarm has a very thick edge and tip compared to the Buck 119. Also. The Buck 110 was used by Gene Moe to kill a 750lbs Grizzly(not the biggest, but still bigger than several pit bulls) who attacked him. So it was self defense, not hunting for fun. Those tips are excellent for self defense. Not for prying.

For a knife that's meant to handle lighter use work and processing game, I think it did surprisingly well given the steel they use. I personally would like a flat grind vs a hollow grind to make it stronger, but for its intended uses it doesn't need that.

Ya know for a knife that was designed to dispatch and skin animals, especially for the price point it’s at, I still rate mine 10/10. Interesting it didn’t break where the blade met the handle but it snapped at the blade itself, I’ve been waiting for a video like this so I can know the limits of this knife and I gotta say it did pretty good for what it is. You should try the new Buck 119 with the better steel and see if it does any better. Although I doubt it since it’s not a utility knife and that hollow grind no matter the steel can only handle so much.

Straight up. It’s not meant to be a beater survival knife. But the one I’ve had for 10 years came factory SCARY sharp; more than field ready to skin game, and it’s EASY to sharpen. It’s a great hunting knife. It’s not meant to be used as a pry bar or to stab into cars. I love my victorinox and leatherman knives; they’d fail these tests. Not meant for it

It's primary design purpose is as a hunting knife, and for such it excells. I like the blade but the handle is block-y for me. When I was younger I was gifted one with a Paracord wrapped handle and I really loved it, the wrap fit good in hand. A little while ago I purchased a new one on sale and the handle didn't feel good in my medium sized hands, so I gifted it. I primarily use a Knives Of Alaska Yukon belt knife & a 70's Old Hickory 6" butcher knife for game processing.
@konnorwerth4906
@konnorwerth4906 2 года назад
@@MB-jg4tr yea, I have large size hands so it makes sense. I even thought the handle could be a hair bulkier but my dad a few years back bought me it for Christmas. I use it for gutting my fish, small game & hopefully my first deer this year on a hunting trip with my uncles. Other than that i use it for general outdoors cutting task, I wouldn't do to much wood work with it, If I want a chopper id probably like the ontario raider bowie if I want a bushcraft knife maybe a mora garberg, but edc I use a Leatherman wave.

The Buck 119 is an awesome knife fore game or personal defense outdoors. It’s also gorgeous. If you need to cut your way out of a car trunk then get into a vicious sword battle and finally deflect bullets with your knife handle, you might wanna pack something else. Our dads and grandparents packed a hatchet. Picture an axe but with a short handle. Hatchet handles suck at defending against bullets but do better at cutting you out of cars if you have room to swing. Hatchets would score 1000 out of 10 on the wood processing test which is why people bothered taking them into the woods so they didn’t f@CK up their knife tips.

The handle is made of a hard resin called phenolic, the same stuff pool balls are made of. It's a great well made hunting knife that cuts very well and does what it's designed to do very well. I don't understand why anybody would think a knife let alone a hunting knife much be capable of stabbing through steel or really any of this abuse in order to be a good cutting tool. I certainly would take my 119 over that sharpened pry bar of a Becker any day of the week.

Luckily I had a hot cup of coffee to throw in it's face. My Buck 120, or a 9mm have accompanied me ever since. Have you never seen Lynn Thompson of Cold Steel testing fighting style weapons. He uses animal carcasses in denim and leather to stimulate combat. I liked and subscribed to your channel because I also enjoy seeing how these knives hold up under extreme abuse. But this knife and the USMC KA-BAR, are made for self defense/combat. These situations demand a light, sharp and strong knife. But not a heavy slow handling blade that would be better for chopping wood. So nothing is wrong with me. I'm simply stating the truth. You have to apply the conditions the knife is made for.

Was waiting for this test, it did around what I expected (was secretly hoping it would do better). It's a great knife for being a classic and really nice looking. Perfectly good for strictly "knife" stuff like butchering a deer and such but seeing how much tougher and capable many knives are, the Buck 119 seems a little limited. Thre BK2 had its tip break off also on a piece that was stuck in the wood. The Buck 119 and 120 with the 420HC showed to be tougher. The Becker's handled the car action really well regarding tip and edge , both were intact after that. But they are known for breakage also. @@joex I'd strongly recommend one if you can find an old carbon steel one cheap, but they're hard to find cheap and not completely shot. I got lucky with mine, it's pretty beat up, but still nearly pristine on sharpening wear and still VERY serviceable, I've only had to do a full sharpening job when I bought it, steel holds up super well, and for its extreme hardness, it's pretty damn tough too

@@BladesRKing fwiw that clone uses 7cr17 steel (upgraded Chinese version of 440 a steel). Typically gets about 57 HRC and 30% more carbon than the 420hc steel (around 55hrc). However, Buck heat treats their steel up to 58 HRC using cryogenic freezing process. So, it's really pretty much a wash. Buck's HRC is just a tiny bit better. 119 clones are about 1/3 the cost. Buck's older style 440 c steel is a whole other ball game. They often got HRC around 60-61 back in the old days. People struggled to sharpen their buck knives prior to diamond and carbide sharpeners.
