I’ve had a Bark River Boon II in 3v satisfy my traditional knife needs. It’s survived now it’s 4th season as a Fire (wood prep) knife. It had impressed me so much I purchased the Bark River Quarter Master which came apart on its maiden voyage. They promptly fixed it but the trust is now gone. I’m back to my trusty BR Bravo 1.5...Yes your Benchmade still makes me wish I bought one.

The 124 is a slicer built for general camo tasks and defense in the 70's. Batoning wasn't a popular activity at the time nor was cross cutting. It's a better slicer than most knives it's size but not designed to do any wood working.

I believe the original one was a dive knife. It slices good. But no better than any other knife of similar thickness. My toilet paper tube tests have proven that to me.

Try gutting with the hallowgrind it makes a difference in slicing that you will notice the only difference is that a hallow grind can do things just has good has flat grinds and convex edges

Antler is a knife killer and I've seen several edges roll and chip from it.I agree with you though about the hollow grind.

In my own humble opinion. I don't think a hollow grind has its place as a survival knife. I personally wouldn't want a hollow grind on my survival knife. Great video

I've wondered this as well. Saber grind for survival and maybe full flat grind if it's 1/4". Although, there is one hollow grind that might beat most high end super "duper" steel knives in a face off. And that is the 1/4" thick Buck 650 Nighthawk. The destruction tests I have seen are very impressive. Why they discontinued it is beyond me. In addition, according to Larrin's toughness chart, simple old school 420HC is some of the toughest steels out there. Although, not sure, but my 650C Nighthawk might be 425 or 425M (according to the old 1995 Buck catalog). But to your point, hollow grinds are for slicing. I don't spend money on high end knives so the ones I use are well under the $100 tag and old school steels (Ontario RD's, SP10 Marine Raider, SP51, 650 Nighthawk, Becker BK9, Cold Steel Carbon V Recon Scout, etc.)

Sorry but I love the BUCK 124, a classic. Impressed with the “garbage” Ozark Trail, IMO too much emphasis on designer steels, ok I get holding an edge between sharpening arguments. This was entertaining if nothing else.

I've seen other knives chop antler and take no damage. I've got several khukuri's that go through testing and chop nails in half with no damage. They have to go through this testing to be released to it's new owner. Buck should be able to do the same IMHO. Maybe a 3V Buck 124 with a nice flat ground blade and a convex edge would work better on the antler chop. Thanks for the nice review and testing info. 🗡️👍🔪

I have both as well. I don't have the guts to use my back that way because it cost $180 roughly and I beat the hell out of my OT because I have a brand new $20 for when I break this one. Best $20 I've ever bought.

I have NEVER been a fan of Buck in the 420 steel with the hollow grinds, ever since one broke on me on the ranch. When an Ozark Trail knife in Chinese cheap-ass shiz steel outperforms it, well, Buck you have some explaining to do. Especially for the ridiculous price of the 124. Shame on Buck.

I'd love to see more destruction, try-to-break-it tests on the discontinued Buck 650 Nighthawk. Very tough 1/4" hollow grind. And before people crap on old school 420HC, check out Larrin's (of Magnacut fame) toughness chart. 420HC is some of the toughest steel out there.
