How did I miss this? Ever tried the Talon Machette? I think that might be some of the most impressive chopping footage from this sized blade. Looks like one hell of a tool there. Wish I could still get one. I'll have to settle for the TOPS Storm Vector, which is also unreal from what I've seen. This is the only other knife that has dropped my jaw from the chopping footage.
u do realize 5160 spring steel is a popular choice for sword making and u usually only see spring steel on small knives in the $200 price range add bucks amazing heat treat i think this is an amazing value...thanks brother great reveiw!
Did you find the grind to be on the heavy side? It didn't seem to bite as deeply as you would expect given the weight. Have you compared it to leaner brush axes like your Woodman's Pal or a Fiskars? Thanks for the review.
Since you mentioned the Woodsman Pal, I wonder what your thoughts on it are? I got one and was expecting exemplary quality, but was disappointed. The grind on my Pal is uneven from side to side and it came fairly dull. The fit of the wood to the metal was amateurish and I really debated sending it back, but opted to tweak it myself instead. This looks good, and I've wanted a froe for a while. The stock on this looks much thicker than the Pal, too. I was kind of surprised by the Pal, being US made, I had my hopes up high that it would be legendary. Sadly, this Buck looks like it would be more along what I was expecting. Did the Buck come sharp at least?
traderjoes The Pals do still kinda have that "stamped out during wartime rationing" look sometimes. I sharpened the end and the base of the blade on mine to give it more sharp edge length.
Thanx for tge reply, really helped, since I ordered the Parangatang with the Potbelly and I'm planning of giving my Rodent Rucki a rest and I will be using it sort of a summer Long Knife in my bush, and I have a pretty good chopper with my SP-53, but I do like that Buck Froe, Thanx Israel.
And heres an oddball review request out of left field...have you ever looked at those Fox Champagne Sabers? It isT5MoV, is this junk stainless steel or could you actually use the Fox saber to actually cut things? I haven't seen anybody on youtube or the web evaluate these for anything other than opening bottles. It would be cool to see a knife guy actually test one as an actual cutting implement. I've almost bought one a few times but $150-200 at most online retailers is a bit much if its only good for popping bottle tops, lol.
they go to the trouble of having the "Buck anvil" cut out, yet they can't put in a lanyard hole? For something so heavy duty, I think that a more secure grip with a lanyard would be useful.
Awesome review, as always. I just have a quick question. I'm stuck between this, the Ontario SP8, and the Ontario SP53. I like the 5160 of this blade and the SP53 (though I don't mind the 1095 of the SP8 by any means), and I like the "sharpened pry bar" utility of this and the SP8. I've heard many reviewers say the SP53 is comparable to hatchet/hawk in terms of chopping capability. However, I really really like the sharpened end of the SP8, plus I found if for under $43. Lowest I've found for the SP53 is $82, and $89 for this one. In a perfect would I would get all three, haha. Sharpness out of the box isn't a factor, I'll put a good edge on it. Which would you reccomend for a heavy duty chopper and bottoner, and even shtf blade
Keith Kacanek If being heavy duty is the main thing, I'd go for this Buck Froe, it is thick and heavy and the handle is more durable than on the Ontario knives.
Hi Israel I checked up on the Froe only to find out it's a 3 pc Series, a Froe, Hatchet, and Knife, I just wish Buck used more red, heh heh heh.but I liked it, Thanx Israel.
I finally got my Winkler II Spike belt knife and the tomahawk with rubber grips. I love em and if you really want to know why Winkler knifes are so good just get one in your hand. They are so balanced and crafted like a custom more then a small production.
Excellent video Israel, in your opinion how does that Buck Chopper size up against the O.K.C. GEN2 SP-53, I have tge SP-53 and I think it's a "Sharpened Hammer" would you do a face off to me it would be like the Heavy Weight Fight of the Centry, I would like to see it to make up my mind whether to get that Buck, Heah Israel tell Buck they need to use more red, heh heh heh.
the red coating also makes the froe highly visible. In a camp setting that can be a huge plus. A lot of people lose a knife or a hatchet in plain sight because it blends in with the ground so well. especially when you throw in a walnut handle. thats why a lot of people wrap a bright orange band of tape around their axe and hatchet handles.
That Buck Compadre is an interesting blade. Truthfully, at first look it took my breath away. Kind of dangerous looking but, oh, so handy. Though I believe that Becker designed the BK-9 with the idea of chopping in mind, I also believe that knives should not be used for this purpose. However, something like the Buck Compadre seems to me to be the perfect tool for such tasks as batonning and the like. An unusual blade, but I like it. I think its colour is kind of neat, also. Good video!
It chops like a longer knife would, since the shape lets you chop right to the end of the edge, so it chops like a 2-3 inch longer knife would, which is pretty good!
I've been eyeing this, but the price keeps putting me off. I don't have a specific need for it, afterall, and for the same price I could get like, a Condor or 2, so that's the route I usually go(side note:when you gonna get that new Condor Duku parang, it's awesome, and I know you like you some parang!). Still keeping my eye on these though, watching and waiting for a deal to pop up.
I have never really been a fan of knives where the handle curves down lower than the blade, IMHO I think I would be worried about hitting my knuckles when chopping with it !
That's a COOL Looking Blade! Think ill need to pick one up to test! And of course ill have to sand blast that Powdercoated off her. Local shop has them onsale for $80.00 Cad :)
Yes before there was "batoning" there were what was called a froe. A froe actually had an eye where the handle came out at a right angle. It was designed to make wood roofing shingles. You basically would split short boards from what looked like a firewood chunk. Like this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--FjpmFwVLtM.html
Ahhh I just love it when the bigger blades come into the play :) Really interesting design and thickness, I see some modding potential like giving it a point + making it lighter but cutting it in an angle from the spine, kinda like a parang... but I guess it would lose a part of it's charm then. Awesome video ;)
5160 not a particulary expensive steel?? Sorry but look price of all machete whit 5160 carbon steel....is high price.....just aranyik machete is cheap but really good blade.

I realy need to stop watching your videos Becaus now i have another one to add to the list of stuff i cant live without Its one BADASS WOMPER CHOMPER I need to get one
machetes like this are made for chopping and batoning but the problem is now all these people think any machete made should ba able to be batoned through a log and survive. i watched a guy try to baton a gerber gator jr. through a log and claim it was a piece of shit because it broke. people need to know the limitations of their tools and what they were made for, thin machetes are for brush clearing and thick ones are for chopping/batoning
+WeAllJuggleKnives Good saying bro :P What can you say about the knive brand "RUI" ? Did you know them ? When not look at these knives , they make a solid impression :) Sorry for my grammar and spelling xD
