Square Tip WWII USMC Machete: goo.gl/w77esW
Blade Length: 16.25 inches
Steel: Unknown High Carbon
Thickness: 0.25 inches
Handle Scales: Hardwood
Weight: 1 pound 9 ounces
Sheath: Blued Steel, Leather Frog
Made In: India
Price: $90
Replica of a heavy machete issued to bomber crews over the Eastern Front. The blade shape may resemble a Latin machete, however the Luftwaffe machete is far thicker and heavier, with much less flex, almost like a short sword. The mass is closer to a hatchet, however the grind and edge profile become narrow like a machete.

It looks like the original design for the luftwaffe borrowed heavily from the falchion, a short heavy sword carried as a sidearm, the same sword was used as a the basis for many of what we now called a "bowie" knife as well.

I love the cross guard on this Machete it gives it a sword like appearance, when I saw this Machete I thought to my self; it would function as a deadly hand to hand combat weapon as well.

Can you explain to me why a lot people regard lightweight machetes as zombie killers? Seems to me that a lightweight machete doesn't have the mass to penetrate or crush the skull. This Luftwaffe WWII Survival Machete for me is true zombie killer even though I prefer the tomahawk.

I ain't sure why they are calling it a machete. Luftwaffe was never issued machetes, they were issued modernized Prussian pattern facschinenmesser (also known as fascine knife). The knife you have shown in the video is basically a Prussian pattern faschinenmesser that was modernized by blade makers from Solingen to meet the requirements of Luftwaffe during World War II.

I bet they called it that just to optimize it for search terms so more people would find and buy one

that's pretty damn cool, i'm liking these historical blades showing up on your channel man. Any design that can withstand active service in a world war was to be pretty tough. Good vid as usual man, keep it real.

Great Review! Again Im really suprised by the toughness of Windlass stuff. I once tortured my 1850 Coffin Hilt Bowie by chopping stone and concrete (with the original 1mm edge, I wanted to stress the tang as much as possible) and then stepping on it with my then magnificent weight of 130 Kilos. It had some dents in the edge, but no chips and the blade was slightly bent. I really think Windlass should expand in the normal Knife market with some Classic-ish blades that are ergonomically better than their historical stuff, but more beautiful than their Cobra Steels. I think there could be a niche.

That was a lot of fun. The Luftwaffe WWII Survival Machete is pretty dangerous. As you were chopping through that branch I kept imagining myself missing and hitting my leg while using it. Ouch! I can tell that you like machetes. I noticed two others in the background while you demonstrated. Thank you for an entertaining video. Always a pleasure for me.

Very nice bit of kit. Hoping to get one soon, but must be quick as the place I saw them has only three and I don't see Windlass making any more.

Per Sonne I looked up the word "fascine" in my OED and did not find the word. What is a "fascine knife"?
@quantum470
@quantum470 9 лет назад
Teachering "Fascines" are bundles of sticks/branches that was used for building trenches. So a "fascine knife" was used for cutting wood (fascines) and also as a weapon.

In Medieval England this would be called a falchion . In medieval Germany they would call it a grosse messer (big knife) . Correct me if I'm wrong .
@MQuinn-eb3zz
@MQuinn-eb3zz 6 лет назад
Actually, both the falchion and the grosse messer are more specific weapons, fighting blades (swords). This is more akin to the fascine knife of the 17th and 18th century - used for cutting wood bundles used in entrenchments as well as providing a secondary weapon to support/artillery troops, also to what was called a billhook by the English (not the pole arm but the agriculture implement). A working blade with self defense being secondary.
@TheNocturnalEvil

@@MQuinn-eb3zz Indeed, it's a Prussian pattern fascine knife.

How would you rate it next to the 1902 Bolo Machete? I imagine if they are made by Windlass that the steel is similar. I'm not crazy about its handle shape for extended use and imagine that the Bolo might be more ergonomic and easier to retain. What do you think? I was hoping for a side by side if those two, actually and when i saw it in the video I was thinking it might happen, but alas.
@WeAllJuggleKnives

@dntlss

@@ryanhojun I know this is a old comment but just wanted to say,Heinkel 111 bombers and some BF 109s carried a survival kit that included many things normally found in a survival kit plus a "drilling" shotgun (2 shotgun barrels on top and one rifle barrel underneath)and this machete, if you happen to find a original box with all the components,well lets just say you wont have to worry about the rent or mortgage for awhile, last one i saw went for 40 thousand, Bomber crews flew in many places where there was plenty of brush however the machete was just part of the kit, more like a afterthought, hope this helps.

It's because of the usage of wrong terminology for this knife. This so called machete issued to Luftwaffe in World War II was never really a machete. It was a Prussian pattern faschinenmesser, it's a kind of short sword.

With any luck it won't, because Windlass usually makes good stuff as long as you avoid their military swords. This is more of a fluke than anything else, a botched heat treatment more than anything (Quality Control screwed up).
