In every interview with Buck O'Neil that I've seen, it looks like he never had a bad day. Always so pleasant and upbeat, no matter all the adversity he had to go through.
Minnie Minoso was the first Black-Cuban(Afro-Cubano) in the majors. He is in the hall of fame and the Mexican baseball Hall of Fame. Josh Gibson was the batting champion in 1941 in Puerto Rico... batting .480. He played for the Santurce Crabbers. Many players from the Negro-Leagues made their rounds in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Mexico. Their names are in baseball museums in Latin America.
Indeed. I got the chance to chat with Orestes "Minnie" Minoso at Fenway Park in Boston at an Old Timers game. What a perfect gentleman, and a great ambassador for the game of Baseball. He also put a perfect autograph on my program, which I cherish to this day. Rest In Peace, Minnie.
This was great! I used to see alot of the old players around Comiskey Park back in the day. Minnie, Double Duty Radcliffe, Buck was there too but he always had a bunch of folks talking to him. As a really young kid my favorite player was Dick Allen but he intimidated the crap out of me so I never tried to talk with him...lol
