A somber mood in Columbus as Ohio State falls to the Wolverines 31-24 for their third consecutive loss to Michigan. How do Bobby and Schlegs feel about Ryan Day? What about Kyle McCord? A deep dive into the Buckeye's tough defeat. Plus, does OSU still have a chance to sneak into the playoffs? The guys run through the scenarios that would make it a reality. All that, and so much more.

I really hate saying this but "Kyle McChord has no command presence on the field, he has no pocket presence, he doesn't have a strong arm, he can't run, he is oftentimes inaccurate, he makes horrible decisions. I think Ryan did all he could to bring that young man along but there's only so much Day can do. I knew we couldn't do it when during the Wisconsin game and with a 10-0 lead and first and 10 inside Wisconsin's 15 yard line, McChord rolls out and throws into triple coverage and ball is intercepted. Sorry folks but that's JV reserve football type of crap and won't make it against quality D1 programs.

I think you hit on something about McCords game time presences not being much. Another set of commentators saw him at a school benefit and they stated he kinda of sat in the corner and had no real presence in the event. That’s a very bad trait for a top tier QB especially in a big time program like Ohio State. He may get away with that in a team that’s D2 or D3 college ball. But not here. He has to present as confident and engaging. That’s a leadership quality not easily learned, but born. Likely to be reason the the team seem so lack luster and more like a team full of incredible talent yet nothing to rally around. He has to be that rallying point on and off the field. I started suspecting the only reason he’s at Ohio State is his former team mate Harrison, Kyle likely rode the coat tails of Harrison. Harrison made Kyle look better than he actually was in high school.

CJ stunk too. How dare McCord get 89 QBR - good enough for 4th in NCAA for season - against #1 D and QBR rating 5 points better than his EIGHTH in NCAA season avg of 84- in first full year? And not expect to be the cause just like CJ Stroud was BTB. Sure 89 less than 94-but both QB’s played 4-5 QBR points better than average AND in Biggest game. Maybe OSU can chase McCord to where he can Heisman/Natty 15-0 like Joe Burrow. Long list of portal QB’s with QBR higher than his defective 84 this year - eager to step in to compete with McCord and Brown. Maybe CJ petitions NCAA for one more year - oh - but HE was the problem 21/22.

Oh and lets talk about the golden boy Brian Hartline. Great recruiter without question. Where is development. Flemmings is the only wide receiver that can block, and what happen to the best wide receiver room in the country. What a joke. Egbuka dropping passes all year. Even MHJ dropping passes. And where is the separation? Go watch other teams in the country. They all have wideouts that get open. Also, can someone please tell me why our offense looks like it is playing in a phone booth? Whoever gets the ball, there are 2-4 defenders right there for the tackle. Again watch other teams, they get playmakers the ball in space and they make one guy miss and they got room to run. Where is this for our team. Where is development? Where is spreading the field? Where is the creative play calling? Just a joke.

I thought Day should have gone for the first down, and that's not me second guessing him in hindsight because I thought that at the time. You think Day would have learned from the Ruggles missed kick against Georgia, which was about the same distance and in a dome with no wind. Fielding is a good kicker but you can't put him in a spot like that especially on the road, when he hasn't done it all year. It was Ryan being stupid. If Ryan didn't want to leave Michigan with hardly any time, he could have let the clock run down a little bit and then gone for the first down. If you get the first down, you can still take one or two shots at the end zone or get closer for a better kick and you still have your last timeout if you don't get out of bounds. Ryan clearly didn't think through that possible scenario in advance of the game. His clock management and field positioning decisions near the end of the first half have been bad in multiple games. He needs to get somebody to help him resolve that issue.

@Primus54
@Primus54 7 месяцев назад
What has changed since 2018? Urban was H.C. and Day was O.C. where he is most comfortable and Urban’s QBs were allowed to run to extend drives. Finally, McCord does not have top D1 instincts. His high school rating was because he had Marvin Harrison, Jr. to throw to.
@jamesschmidlin1127
@jamesschmidlin1127 7 месяцев назад
Yes, I honestly think McCord has rode the coattails of Marvin to get into D1 football. McCord looked way better than he actually was with Marvin while in HS, because it was HS competition. Now he’s with the big boys, all his weaknesses are showing. And Day , the alleged QB developer has done little to make improvements in Kyle. By the time he reached this point he should have been much better than he was.

I understand the reasoning but still don’t agree with the FG attempt at the end of the first half. We don’t have a kicker proven to hit from that distance. And the reason we were down to 37 seconds is because Ryan Day misused timeouts at the beginning of the half which he does all the time. This time it came back to bite him. Not sure why that’s not talked about more. It’s one thing to have to waste 1 timeout but he regularly wastes 2 early in the first half.

Always love the Buckeyes but are they the most underachieving program in the past 20 years? Too many good players to not win big games. If I were to dwell on some of the big games lost in recent memory, itd be hard to have hope that theyll win anything again soon. Still, at some point give Michigan credit for putting together good teams that play cohesive football and maximize potential. 12 team playoff can't come soon enough.

Michigan fan here. Really good, thoughtful discussion from you guys. My take is that Day and staff seem a little shell shocked in their coaching of this game. Look at how the staff coached against Penn State vs. how they coached in this game, and there just seemed to be a reluctance to do anything bold and risky. Maybe they really believed the only reason OSU lost last year was five big plays. But that seems myopic to me and filled with a little hubris. Day just needs to be bolder in his approach next year.

However, as a former D1 athlete and a former coach for 20 years at a very high level in my respective sport, I am much too competitive to hand out participation trophies to D1 athletes and coaches, many of whom are making millions of dollars a year in contracts and NIL deals. @TheAferguson381 1st, you have to be intellectually honest when commenting on another's post. 1st, I said Vrabel, who IS and has been a head coach, IS tough, IS a Buckeye, and has been a Buckeye who knows what it takes to get THAT W against Michigan, and would demand respect and exude the dawg mentality that Day does not seem to be able to consistently bring out in these players. 2nd I rather take a swing on a Buckeye in Hartline, IF Vrabel isn't an option because Titans don't make that move. Because he's a Buckeye, because he's a Buckeye from Ohio, because he knows what it means to wear the uniform, and because he knows what it means to wear the Buckeye uniform INTO Ann Arbor and win twice, because he has the respect of the players and YES he knows what it means to have the respect of the players and develop said talent 😉

Ryan Day is a good coach, he could be elite if he gave more play calling duties away. His plate is so full because his ego wont let him dictate duties to other staff. Fire Parker Fleming, hire Laurinaitis for LB coach (which frees up Knowles), and hire Shawn Lewis from Colorado and let him call the plays. Every head coach has issues letting go because of their ego and it literally cost us a natty, possible years. Fire Denis, fire Parker, hire James and Shawn and be a manager. He is overloaded and no creativity on offense. Look at Jimbo, same ego issue. Also Day didnt want to lsoe Marv so he named Kyle the starter, when most people knew Devin had the higher ceiling.

What if we give play calling duties to somebody who later turns out to be a big stiff and we are the next Iowa or Michigan State? There were too many mistakes for the buckeyes to overcome. They just kept mounting up. It always starts with the coaching. Whether it is in game management. YOU HAVE TO READ THE REST.Not able to make adjustments during the game on both sides of the ball. Bad quarterback play being inconsistent. The kicking game wasn’t good. Inside linebackers out of place which left the tight ends wide open to get first downs. Loosing some top recruits to other schools has to stop. Well meaning recruiting for a certain type of well behaved players is great. But not at the expense of loosing out on Alfa players that truly makes a game changing difference. It has to start with both o-line and d-line players. They have to be good players to begin with. Top recruits. We’ll see how the next two recruiting classes turn thins around. Buckeyes as of now has the 2nd ranked 2024 class. And up there close to the top in the 2025 class. Now we can loose all of those or most of those players if the buckeyes get rid of Day. They’ll flip or transfer to other teams. Then it will take years to even get back to where we are now. Even loosing to more than just Michigan. Greed is not your friend. Hate isn’t either. I’m not happy with how Day is doing against Michigan now, but I’m not going to be hateful and greedy knowing it can be worse without Day for a few years. You’re not going to get Meyer, Trussel to come back. Never going to get a top coach away from a team that they are already having success with. The answer is this. You fire Day who you gonna get that’s going to get the team to a better place in a short amount of time. YOUR NOT! So if you do fire him, AGAIN, the next few years are going to be crapper than now.
