After a few years on the NASCAR circuit, poof, it was over. No double-zero car. No six-shooter logo. Where did Buckshot go? The Dale Jr. Download finds out... Catch the full interview on dirtymomedia.com or any major podcasting platform.
Another driver's therapy session, I love these behind the scenes stories. All these stories from retired driver's that you don't get at racetracks. Thank you Dale Jr 88.👍🇦🇺🤠
he knows most these people, and or grew up around or with them. And as Buckshot said back before the 2ks Nascar was like family. all the teams worked together a lot shared parts, tools, tips etc. all the drivers wrenched etc. now its more like Indy car. Drivers are puppets for advertisers, while rest team does the other jobs. makes the drivers much less relatable imo. and u get these spoiled brat mentalities. gimmie gimmie gimmie.............
yep, knew the name. but didnt know him. Seems like a nice guy. Not sure what i think of the wife giving an ultimatum..... but he seems happy. so whatever. i just hate peoplethat use kids and or divorce as leverage to get what they want. with that said i get its just a snippet to his life and he may of left out the months of discussions they had between them times too. to be fair (Its none of our business) lol
Exactly, I was trying to find just one interview of him a few months ago for that same reason. There's probably some interviews of him in some of these obscure old Busch races, but I never seen him interviewed in cup!
@@jnholland006 Yeah, I remember that his dad is wealthy. I just remember Buckshot racing one season, then being gone the next season with no explanation and no one talked about him.
I love how guys like Buckshot still call it 'Busch Series' in reference. That's what it was called at the time guys, don't rebrand it to current name! I'll never call it anything else myself
I end up correcting myself backwards and forwards at times. I grew up at the end of the "Sportsman" era, but I have always called it Busch. Then stutter to "uhhh xfinity... LOL
I remember seeing his shop right beside I-85 in Spartanburg, SC, but didn’t know much about him. Looking back, he was probably one of the smarter ones because he had the sense to walk away! Racing is great and everything, but it’s a full time commitment, not an 8 to 5 job, and the family life suffers for most of these dudes!
I think that is a great idea! I remember Tony saying there would be a few seats available for retired drivers that could clear their schedule to come and race one or two times. He also said there'd always be a seat available for Dale Jr. (Woohoo!) I miss the IROC series, but that was for current champions still actively driving. Not to sound like an ageist or anti-elderly (?), but I wonder if SRX has an age limit - or if it's based on medical clearance for those who want to race. I'd love to see some additional retired racers in the series even if it is a one-off. AJ Foyt, Al Unser Jr, Michael Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Max Papis, Dario Franchitti, Steve Kinser -- wait, that sounds like an IROC lineup! Oops hehe
I remember that race at Talladega well that he is talking about in the fall of 2003. There were a lot of R&D cars that race, and Buckshot ran his last start there in the #00. He led a lot of laps to the surprise of many and could of pulled off the upset if he didn't blow a tire halfway through.
I can't say enough how much I have grown to love these videos, and the Q@A sessions. I always liked JR as a racer, but he is so interesting, intelligent and easy to listen to that I am hooked. Great job everyone on this team, Keep them coming!
I was never really a fan of Buckshot- hell , now I realize maybe I should have been - I can relate to a lot of what he says- I feel the same about Mike Skinner - this forum shows what these people were going thru during their racing career and confirms the fact that you never know what these guys are all about- Good Luck Buckshot
i miss all these 80s, 90s drivers. all were relatable. now its just bunch of spoiled rich kid brats. cant stand nascar today. Gordon gone i cant stand anyone else. I wanted to like Stewart but after he killed the guy on dirt track. the way it was handled just seemed poor to me...... I dont feel he did it on purpose. but same time could of been handled better. Jimmy Johnson, never could stand the pos. list goes on. We got nascar rewind on youtube. good enough for me.
@@FastDuDeJiunn Gordon was a spoiled rich kid - I'm sure Tony's mammy and pappy had $ or he wouldn't have driven Indy cars - All of them are today and to a certain extent most of the drivers in the last 30 yrs have been - expensive game.. but these little kids aren't very likeable because they're prima donnas -
This is awesome, Buckshot was somewhat of an enigma in the Cup series. Glad to hear he's doing well. I'd love to hear from David Green some day as his 97 Cat car is what got me in to nascar as a child and been a fan of his ever since.
Dale, these are fantastic interviews and I’m not even much of a nascar guy. You ask great questions of interesting guests and you have always been just a decent, good man. Thanks for doing these.
Thanks for sharing. I remember watching his race at Bristol when he was wrecked and was determined to get back on the track and wreck the guy that wrecked him....he waited and waited...them shot out and succeeded. Awesome!
I love waking up and going on the River with you. When my wife retire next year I'm taking my 26' boat from St. Paul to the Gulf. I have Kayak most of the river down to St. Paul and now I want to finish the rest of it. Hope to see you on the way.
Damn, just a few months ago I was trying to find one Buckshot interview on video and couldn't find one. Perhaps he had some interviews in some of the obscure Busch races, but hell I had never heard this guy talk before.
Multi car teams really hurt NASCAR. That's the business side. It used to be everyone against everyone. In 84 Hendrick put Bodine and Richmond as teammates. But to me, teammates really didnt start dominating the sport until the mid 90s. NASCAR changed a lot after the 94 season. It got a lot tighter. Seemed to trickle down into the other series as well. I think the sport would have been a lot better if teammates never happened. Just every team against everyone.
@J Some will help if they can. Others won't. Depends on who you are. I think Dale Jr was a great teammate. Jmo. And on the other side I'll say Hamlin or someone like Lagano aren't good teammates.
@@CC.94 And while Dale Jr was a great teammate at HMS, The Establishment (Gordon, Johnson) went out of their way to be NON-teammates on the track to America's Son. 🤬They still burn my biscuits, 4 years later. 😠
@@mrFiiSKiiS You need to go Googling and find the comments made by both Gordon and Johnson re: not helping Jr at plate tracks, and that they purposely left him high or put him in the sucker hole BECAUSE they did not want him ahead of them for fear of him winning. So, take your 'WTF are talking about' comment and sit on it. Doesn't mean they aren't all friends now, but in the heat of racing, it was work with anyone BUT the 88.
It' just weird seeing these guys 20 plus years later, last time I saw him he looked like a young kid, the last time I saw Roy Buckshoot Jones he was racing hard against Joe Besse from Maine, at least that race Joe came out on top.
Its good see buckshot doing well after racing, back then we had a family wager of who would win the 2001 Daytona 500, my wife did not know who to pick for the race I selected buckshot for her pick. After the start of the race. I told her I selected buckshot for her pick, her response and the families was, who is buckshot Jones. my response was a new driver, the rest is history
Jr. Could you talk about ryan newman's incar cam at dayton it was amazing but I like to see you talk us through it you hear when the car speed up on straight aways and then fall off in the corner ! how it's seems like it he catches the draft down the straights but then loses it ! And the car looks so good running !! It seems like the car is on rails, the good thing this camera placement really put you in the driver seat so if you could discribe the feeling damn running good and do understand the car in good air ! Kind of !!!! But can't there ! School us on when the rpm drops and why and speeds up when feel the draft taking you there ! Thanks jamie miller
There was a bowling alley where I live and the pro shop had a buckshot Jones bowling ball it had a diecast of his car in the ball he was sponsored by a bowling ball company.
Yeah but he wanted to retire in a few years - just made it happen a bit quicker and he didn't really have a full time paying ride anyway. He had racer's regrets but seemed pretty at peace with his decision to me.
First: BUCKSHOT JONES! name a more nascar name than that, I'll wait. Second: Don't ever, EVER, date/marry someone then tell them they aren't allowed to do the thing they were doing when you met. Assuming that it was as cut and dry as he stated it, then there are some disgustingly abusive control issues there. And dressing it up as "but think about the children" makes it more scummy, not less. My heart goes out to buckshot because that's some emotional terrorism right there and he walked away to "save" his relationship with his wife and kids. But if you can watch that man talk about it and not see the soul crushing pain it caused him then I envy your ignorance.
Maybe, but even in this snippet he hints that he also wasn't having much fun racing in the cup series. I think if he ever got a quality ride, he might have stuck around for a few more years.
I'm so glad you got to have Buckshot on after you gave the "holy" NASCAR "approved" Lajoie on to boast and throw his crap on Buckshot for mere sport years later for nothing more than a laugh... I love these conversations. But I was intertwined behind the scenes with this mess and I think you shrunk away from the real issue of how Lajoie was a driver/man back then...
I bet you don't remember Waller Mill in Williamsburg Virginia when I tossed you a lighter from my boat to yours and you tossed it back and I caught it in 99 or 98. I didn't make a deal about it. My brother and his friend wouldn't even gave a fudge about it. But I knew. Should of asked you to autograph it. Hahahaha. We was having a good time!
And he blew $1,000,000 that his Grandpa gave him for Buckshot Motorsports and that shop on I85 in Spartanburg,SC. After racing he basically went to work for his Daddy. That's it.
