Hot as hell there and poor Buddy wearing the tux and playing hard. If it wasn't hot enough, they had torches burning near the stage. No wonder he was rushed to the hospital right after...
Wow. Yes, we know that Buddy demanded a lot from his musicians. But he never demanded anything from others that he didn't demand from himself first and far more.
This definitely was a grueling performance for Buddy. And yes, Cathy Rich has said that. But, I also read an interview with Buddy's personal manager Steve Peck in some magazine years ago about the incident. Steve was right there to immediately attend to Buddy when he left the stage after playing WSS. In the interview Steve never says anything about a heart attack. He talks about extreme over heating & heat exhaustion. So who knows. If Buddy did have a mild heart attack, it never was confirmed by a physician apparently.
@@cloudview747 I was a member of the video crew, contracted by Paramount to tape the concerts. It was a steamy night at Altos de Chavon and everyone was sweating. We heard rumors, that night, that he had gone to the hospital. But we saw Buddy at breakfast the morning after, and were relieved to see him smiling and conversing with crew members. If he had suffered a heart attack, we we not aware of it at the time.
I just acquired this my friend, and quite unexpectedly. Like you I too had a VHS of this a hundred years ago but... long lost. Well, better late than never with getting this posted and available for all to see!
I have this on VHS tape somewhere in my collection. Another drummer friend gave it to me and I never asked how he made it. Buddy sure looked bad but played like a monster as always. I know Buddy had incredible hands and feet on the set but I always thought his creativity was miles above other drummers. Put on a headset and listen to what he plays, I smile from ear to ear. I'm sure he never liked the imitators yet he always spoke well of drummers like Gadd who were also very innovative. Always appreciate your posts and we need to let the kids hear what a genius sounds like on the drum set. "Happy Thanksgiving"
For years, I've been wondering why only "West Side Story Medley" was shown, from this appearance. It's great to see these "new" tunes. The band sounds great, but you can see they're suffering in the heat... Buddy, especially, who continues to put out 100%, regardless. Thank you for posting this, RC! :)
I too have wondered Mike. I think it may be because the official release video of this concert (which I own) did not include these tunes. So here we must have a video copy that someone videotaped off the air when it was broadcast.
Back in 85 in bensalem high school we had a vhs tape floating around in music class with west side story from this concert, but never seen this ! Awesome thx for posting!
Great find! Now we know when he got to WSS he was spent Originally Sinatra introduced him and he was sweating Personally I wouldn't have chosen Only Time Will Tell for a Sinatra audience
Yes. Definitely a rough night for our Man. But he ALWAYS felt the show must go on, and he gave it 100%. I swear every time I saw him he never disappointed. EVER.
Oh man! Haven't seen this particular version of "Time Will Tell" since it originally aired all those years ago. One of my Buddy favorites. Ok.....they are all my favorites. :-) Great clip here.
BUDDY with his perfect Vortex always. No others can do like him. Still he looks like he had a bad time with his heart. Poor BUDDY we love You RICH. 🥁🌟🇺🇲
What a good find! I always thought Buddy had only played "West Side History" at this concert. Thank you very much Cloudview787 for sharing this unknown part.
Wow!! You saw quite a unique performance. I feel bad for Buddy that it was SO hot and he was struggling physically SO much. But of course he managed to pull off his demanding WSS drum solo nevertheless!!
I absolutely love how he plays the swish knocker I think the sticks he’s using are the Ludwig 15a I could be wrong but it’s amazing how well he plays and how the band is really into it and he’s really into it
In one of the Buddy biographies the author talks about how pumped Buddy was for this concert, playing with his old roommate Frank. That's why he got the specially fitted tux for the occasion.
@@cloudview747 first time I met Buddy was at Clearwater Jazz Fest in early 80s and he was very nice to me and even showed me a few things back stage on a wooden table with sticks in hand . I was told prior to meeting him he was alittle stand offish but on the contrary he was very receptive to me I told him I was a Resp Therapist volunteering for the Hospital but also a long time drummer and told him I watched him everytime he was on Carson show. He laughed, and said "thanks kid" hope I played well we both laughed and he handed those sticks which were stolen a few yrs later.Didnt care so much about the sticks as I was meeting him. Sorry for the biography. But a great time I will never forget.
@@jimbarcelona1078 It definitely sounds like a wonderful experience meeting Buddy. Since I started my Buddy Rich RU-vid Channel many years ago you would not believe how many people have written just like you, about meeting Buddy, and how nice and gracious he was. Buddy was a very special person, in more ways than one.
