I'm a trombone player, played in some big bands in high school and college. Listened to BR a lot over the years. After watching a lot of his videos, the thing with which I am impressed the most is his attention to the melody of a tune. A good big band drummer will kick entrances. BR accents almost every note of a melody, in addition to kicking entrances.
Trivia: This was the first song Sonny wrote for Cher. They had no money. They had to ask their friends for money for the studio. The harmonium player, a friend of Sonny's did it for free. But in the studio Cher got stage fright and couldn't sing. So Sonny said he would sing with her and made up that high harmony above her. Then Cher recorded it. True story
He doesn't forget rhythm when he solos unlike a lot of jazz drummers, occasionally he sounds like ginger Baker, he also plays incredible rock rhythms, yes he is probably the best but not necessarily the most stylistic
I worked Rich's show at the KY Arts Center. The cheapskate didn't want to pay for the hour of overtime the load-out was taking so we sat his crap on the dock and closed the stage door, locking him out. He and his driver had to load their own gear. We use the "Buddy Rich Out" metaphor now as a solution to bad situations on load outs.
These videos are the greatest, because they let you see Buddy play an entire chart. And when it’s something like this, arguably his last really great chart, and he just lights it up like mad…💪❤️🔥
Saw him on my 20th birthday...Uncle Sams ,Nantastic beach Hull Massachusetts February 2nd 1979.....im 65 now and i remember his drumming to this day...The Master!!!!
My dad and my brother were both drummers and when I was 5 or 6 my dad had buddy rich and gene Krupa on the old reel tapes and I started listening to them and I had a great education in playing drums and I still play but buddy was the best drummer in his generation. He paved the way for other drummers that came after him.
Anybody else notice at 28:20 buddy breaks a stick and then grabs another so quickly. And yet to cover it up he plays a quick fill on toms to make the cymbal not sound like he was hitting clams the entire time!
Planet Earth was extremely fortunate to have Buddy Rich cheering everyone up~! The man exudes confidence and his sense of humor is ' Through the Roof ! ' Absolutely Stellar drumming ! ...when you hear Buddy- you never want to die - you just want to live forever just so you can keep listening to the greatest drummer of ALL TIME!
