Budget AMAZON Power Stations... Are they worth it??

In today's video I take 6 of the cheapest power stations from Amazon.com that are under $500 and test them for 6 weeks, use and abuse them with my friends and put them through a set of tests. We talk about these solar generators and what I like and don't like about them and if it's worth buying a budget power station. I can get a 700w power station with a 100 watt solar panel for $50 less than one 500w Jackery power station. Hint… this power station came out on top!

That LIpower one is $133 on Amazon today. thank you so much for the great review! I did buy the LI just because right now my needs are simple... keep lights and devices on during a power outage at my house. I like the light because it can light up my office really well. I live at the end of a circuit and near the lake in heavy woods so I lose power all the time, but do not want to have to go to the office. I buy minimal cold stuff in the summer so I don't have to worry about keeping the fridge on. I do work in engineering for the power company, and need to stay online so this little unit is perfect for me. I can add the solar later as my house has great sun access. If I start to camp I can go bigger.

All the times he said "input" when he meant output drove me crazy. If you plug a device into a "power station" to charge your device (ie phone, tablet, battery) that is NOT an input, it's an output. Charging the "power station" is an input.

16 output ports, which can power 16 devices at the same time. F2400 specially designed a rotating knob for adjusting the input power from 300W to 1100W, which decides the recharging speed. When the voltage is too low, you can also charge the machine by decreasing input power.-fossibot

Before hurricane season this year we went online to the companies site of Oupes, they were running a sale for a 600w lifepo4 with solar for a delivered price of $460.! I think that was the best deal I've seen for this size with solar! After 6 months storage it still read 100%, no loss! At the same time Oupes had a 1200w lifepo4 with solar for $920.! Now Oupes has a 1800w lifepo4, and we will be looking at it next hurricane season to see if they'll be running any sales!

You will get a much longer life span out of the battery if you store it 80% rather than 100%. Storing at full capacity is very hard on the battery and causes faster degradation.

Get a 12v 300ah LiFeP04 battery. 3.8 kwh. Get a 2000w pure sine wave inverter, a 60 to 100 watt mppt solar charge controller, and look up plans to build your own. With 800 watts of panels you can easily power a small air conditioner. No matter how you slice it this is a far less expensive option. Get an electrician to advise you or hire one to put this all together with proper fuses, switches, wire size, etc.

Will Prowse, a RU-vidr, does some of the best in-depth power station reviews - testing maximum wattage, charge time, battery quality, comparison with same size alternate brands ect. Also, keep in mind, after a certain number of charges, the power capacity begins to drop off. So quality is important, especially if you're a vanlifer/using the battery for more than weekend trips.

At the time of my research, the Bluetti AC500S & 180watt folding panels seemed best. Like the orange FRAM filters the Jackery just seemed marketing hype because they were one of the first available but weren't as competitive. Now the Bluetti EB55 (or EB70) has my attention with LiFe04 chemistry.

*Rule of thumb: $1/watt.* I have a little 300W non jackery and it ran a TV and cable box for 6 hours before needing recharging. Strobes are absolutely NOT needed for anything. Waste of money and just a gimmick. Better to bring a power bank for the cell phones and save the generator for important things. To run a house refrigerator you need at least 2,000watts or more. About the same with a medium microwave. About solar panels - you get 1/2 of their claimed rating. If you get a little more, count yourself lucky.

@@lyfe.personified Bike - bicycle or motorcycle? Either way a simple power bank would work. If your battery dies that quickly you got something very wrong. VERY WRONG. Charged battery should last at least 8 hours.

OKAY SO ❤️ THIS VIDEO. However just to explain the universal sockets / international sockets on these sorts of things are down to a few reasons. 1. Tooling costs, if practically *all plugs work it makes sales internationally easier and cheaper to have a one size fits all approach *with exceptions 2. It means guests to other countries can buy one of these when touring and use their own plugs without the need for adapters, this is a more secure option and prevents shorts and damages to internal components. 3. Personal point from a NON U.S veiwer, you may not think this but as you are the largest primary English language nation in the world, many people from outside whose primary Language or secondary language is English. Will watch your video's, hence when you question why such sockets are on there it comes across as if you're not considering the advice you give is going to impact non U.S users of the power station, plus when you guys and girls in the U.S flood RU-vid with these videos you should consider running the device in 220/240v mode 50Hz as the results with be quite different given the higher power output. CHECK YOUR DEVICES ARE CAPABLE OF RUNNING OF 220/240v 50hz MODE FIRST. As charging and power use can in power stations be Literally cut in half by a Non U.S or North American Device.

There’s a question that wasn’t brought up in your excellent presentation. When you plug any RV into a 110 (shore power) power supply you have now powered up your onboard converter. Unless you pull the fuse or have a bypass switch you are now trying to charge your RV batteries which takes a serious amount of power from a small (under 1000 watt) power station. There are a ton of off roaders who just don’t realize this and also don’t put their fridge on gas only. Whether your old like me and been off roading since the late 1960’s and had RV’s of some sort since 1972 I find the biggest use for these power stations is a CPAP machine followed by a fridge. You might try and do a test with someone who uses a CPAP and see how many nights you can get out of one charge on a smaller unit.

Nice video, but it sure would have been nice to talk about charging time with that solar panel. It makes a big diff whether a power station charges in 3 hours vs 6 hrs vs 12 hrs.

I'm far from an expert, but as an example, the tiny 250w station I got for $80 charged on a 30w wall charger in a few hours, maybe less. Realistically, you aren't getting more than 60-70w from a 100w panel on a good day, so I'd guess for a higher capacity battery, it's gonna be 6 hours minimum with one panel.

Enjoyed the video, but I have to assume that you chose the off brands due to price rather than long term quality. I don't own a Jackery but many RU-vidrs do, maybe because they got them free. I own two EcoFlow and would not buy any other brand regardless of price only because I can't run them down and they provide everything other than a light. The small one is very light but durable, and the larger one is heavy but will run everything in my camper other than the AC, and if it has a soft start, it would likely run it also.

If I plug the AC output from one machine with 1500 watt inverter info a smaller units charge port, will that cause any undue wear on either device? I found a really good one thats 24wh 298w and all the outlets are regulated, with boost usb ports for fast charging, and it comes with charging cables for ur car cigarette port, wall outlet, and connector mc4. I think im going to get it because its the best ive seen for 150$. Yes a 24wh with regulated outlets for 150$ its a steal and has good reviews

I invested in the Allpowers one a couple years ago. My first one turned defective, but they sent me a second one that I used extensively out in the woods, combined with a solar panel. It charges so much better with one of their solar panels with an MC4 to Anderson plug (the red and black one on the pack). Overall it's alright for light use, but I wouldn't try using any electrical appliance like a coffee maker or a space heater with it. The bluetooth app is largely pointless, EXCEPT that it does allow you to control its functions if the physical buttons malfunctions, and it also tells you how many times the battery has cycled.

@@Leewilly440 There's two things that could be the problem: first is they could be using the older defective batch (that's the one they replaced for me); the aesthetic difference between the two the bad one had covers on the AC outlets while the good one does not. This was a few years back so no idea if the model has changed since. The other problem is if they ever stored their lithium battery pack in near freezing temps, or especially if they ever tried charging a frozen battery pack. The good pack that I got has worked fine for years. Battery packs are pretty much rated for 10,000 cycles, which is over a decade of constant use. I've had the AP pack in all kinds of conditions, cold, hot, in vehicles, in backpacks. Even dropped the thing from high up and smashed my foot, but it still works fine.

Ive been highly debating buying one of these cheapo batteries to match my cheapo fridge but ive been skeptical. Cool to see you testing some of them. A little hint, Jackerys arent all that when it comes to longevity. My fridge is annoying and it wont run when the vehicle is shut off even on the mode thats supposed to let it kill your car battery. it kicks on then faults to low voltage, hence wanting one of these

I have been running my fridge with these power stations for 6 months and never had an issue with it. Sometimes the DC cigarette plug wiggles loose and looses connection when I am offroad but other than that I haven’t had any issues.

You say some are heavier but not why; the different battery types is a major point. The heavier LiFePO can handle many more charge cycles and can produce a consistent output even as they reach a low charge level but are heavier.

I’m also curious on what your recommendation would be for starting off grid… I’m making a power station with panels and batteries but I’m literally gonna be 100% away from power besides my vehicle and I’m gonna be building a cabin and need lights… plus gonna get star link but that’s all after my permanent set up. I just need something I can run my TV and maybe my fridge or mini fridge we don't have any gennys and we often have power outages at our house literally 2 in the last week they usually don't last more than 5 or 6 hours so I need something that cab power a smaller TV and maybe charge itself using solar power during the day. I'm thinking about getting the 500 watt jackery it's that or the 1000w if I can afford it and maybe find a good deal. As long as I can run my TV and fridge and then Recharge it from my car using my converter or my smaller power station.

I generally find the 200Wh range units to be fairly useless... really not much better than the really small battery packs that we know and love. The ones that work the best for the mid-range 500Wh+ units are the Bluetti (such as the EB55), and the Bibene or FFPower CN505. And on the high-end (1000Wh+), the FFPower P2001 or the Bluetti 200P. But all of these units have their quirks. The Bibene/FFPower units tend to over-state their battery capacity but have stellar firmware. The EB55 has a noisy power brick and cannot really operate as a UPS. And it also does not restart its charging input after a fault without manual intervention. The GoLabs units time-out their AC after an hour or two whether you are actively using the plug or not which is extremely annoying. You can't run a fridge overnight with one, for example. And the list goes on. Jackery's have their own issues. And the non-name budget units are just slapped together and typically have a multitude of firmware issues. Also keep in mind that driving devices with AC outputs always burns more power than you think, particularly fridges/coolers, because the AC inverters in these things tends to burn around 10-15W just by being on. So it is important to do you research to make sure that the unit you get does what you want. I will say, though, that these days I would never buy units with traditional lithium-ion batteries. They MUST be LiFePO4 for safety, shelf-life, cycles, and longevity. Most of these little no-name power stations are lithium-ion and not LiFePO4 and frankly its a big lose for any use case. Battery capacity may seem good at the start, but it won't last. And the fire danger of standard lithium-ion at these capacities is just too high. -Matt

Was thinking of buying a jackery at some point. Are those lithium ion? Is that one of the better ones to go with? I saw one guy power a 12v fridge with the 300 for over 24 hours. Seems pretty good in combination with a 100 watt solar panel. Unless that battery life tanks like right after you buy it type of thing.

@@goldenbanjo197 Small 12V fridges and coolers are a lot more energy efficient than normal fridges that run off of AC. The main reason is due to the vampire current the AC inverter on the power station draws when it is on... its usually 10-15W when turned on even when doing nothing. That problem doesn't exist on the DC side. For powering a DC fridge, 24 hours with roughly 300Wh is toally doable. I can power my Dometic with a 600Wh LiFepO4 unit for over 3 days. There are a few provisios. The 12V output on nearly all power stations is limited to around 8A, which means only around 100W or so, which sometimes isn't enough to start the compressor. So YMMV. Most of the Jackery's are Lithium-ion rather than Lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4). Lithium-ion has about 1/3 to 1/2 the cycle life so its a bit more problematic, particularly if buying a used unit. These days you almost universally want to go with LiFePO4 (also known as LFP) based power stations. LiFePO4 has a cycle life in the 2000 range. The failure mode for LiFePO4 (LFP) is nice too. The battery itself just degrades slowly over time. So as long as the electronics in the power station stay good, it can be a dependable device.

My 500w solar power stations can power a dorm fridge but not a small 5 cubic ft chest freezer. My Bluetti EB70 works with the freezer though. I got a 300ah Ampere Time LiFeP04 when prices dropped with the last of my savings and I`m slowly getting all the parts for an emergency solar power supply for a small window air conditioner in case we get hit by hurricanes again. I`m on disability and have no transportation and I could never possibly afford to put fuel in a gas generator for two weeks. But with solar and a battery that size (3.8 kwh) I can avoid heat stroke. Plus with all my cheap solar power stations I can use my plug in chargers to dump their batteries into the big one to extend run time at night. My big battery can power my small AC aprox 7 hours on high and much longer if I set the thermostat to kick the compressor off and on.

@@ErvigHenry For 2kWh of storage or less, all-in-one power stations are a decent choice just for the ease of use. Beyond 2kWh worth of storage, power stations become expensive boat anchors. They just aren't worth the cost, their functions are inefficient at best, and the expansion options are proprietary and get very expensive verses buying discrete batteries and other parts. Plus if the power station breaks you are pretty much dead in the water. If you need significant amounts of storage and want flexibility on being able to expand it, consider throwing together a system from parts. e.g. discrete batteries (such as an EG4 LifePower4 5kWh 48V battery), discrete inverter, discrete solar charge controller, appropriately sized cables, fuses, and breakers. It does take extra work and knowledge but you wind up with a much better system in the end. If something breaks you only have to replace the part that broke rather than the whole thing.

All I have to say is,…beware lesser known cheaper brands, they cut corners to make the specs look good, but quality and longevity lacks. I learned this the hard way. I’d rather pay more money to have lower specs for longevity and dependability.

You didnt mention anything about pass thru charging (aka charge and discharge at the same time). Some cheaper units only allow the DC jacks to be used while charging.

I’m currently building another 01 XJ that is Capable and overland worthy. I’ve been relying on my deep cycle car battery in my other rig to run an ARB 63qrt refer. Works ok but jeep battery needs to be watched for too much drain down. Still in planning stages but thinking a lightweight folding solar panel and something like one of these portable units. Or solar panel to charge jeep battery to keep it topped off. Cool video!

Hi in the Uk we could experience blackouts soon. I'm looking for a portable power station to plug in my Mac mini M1 & monitor. Is it possible to have the computer permanently plugged in to a portable power station, and have the portable power station permanently on charge (only when I'm using the computer) so that if we get a blackout my computer will remain unaffected or at least until the portable power station runs out? I already have my Mac mini set up to automatically transfer from home wifi to 5g if the wifi goes down. If it is could you recommend a portable power bank please? Hope you don't mind me posting this on your page but I have no clue where to start. Thank you.

I would buy a tablet so u don't need to run your tv . Or a small projector that can run on usb c. A benq gv 11, 30 or 31 might do the trick. Or or a mars 3 with it built in battery. The mars 3 is bit expensive but u would be happy with picture quality and battery life

I bought the Jackery 300 Watt on black Friday for $200. It worked for what I wanted to do but surprised by how little 300 Watt would do. If I had to do it over, I would just buy a DC power inverter. (400 watts for less than $50). Perhaps an alternate choice for some people?

I got the Jackery 300 for a weekend trip. Spent two days out in the wild/in my van. It was good since I wasn't using a lot of power toys. Mostly my phone, some USB fans, some lights, and a Hot Logic. I'm thinking of getting a DC fridge so looking at a 1000W battery pack. Plus I'll be using more equipment for cooking and entertainment.

Plastic isn’t really cheap as the molds cost money. Plastic is arguably safer. When you have ground pins on your AC outlets there is likely leakage current to the metal housing - so is there a grounding lug - and who is going to connect it?

Lots of money for a battery? Every 2 years I replace the battery in my F-250. I have a plastic battery box with the used truck battery in it with a 12 panel fuse box mounted on the outside of the box. 1 solar panel with controller. I run all my ham radio equipment with my unit. Plus a 1500 watt inverter. It sits under my bench. More than enough power. I wonder how long the batterys last before they no longer take a charge on 1 of those fancy boxes? They look real easy to steal out of your rig. I never let the auto repair shops keep my old batterys. I can run parts of my home with them. Years ago I bought a 3 panel harbor freight solar unit. Works great. Have fun.

At those prices I would just assume build my own out of a single or pair of deep cycle 12 V batteries And an inverter with a pair of 12v outlets Add a solar kit to it and you will be looking pretty good

@@MuddyBeards4X4 Yeah it would be much harder to move around but I would build it into something like an aircraft carry on style roll around Milwaukee toolbox it will be heavier but you'll have double if not triple the power capacity of those smaller ones, it would be a great thing to have at base camp I've always been the diy kinda guy most the time you can build it better at home then the mass production junk they sell nowadays

You will trade price for portability. You can put that setup You are building in a card board box if you want but you won't be moving it anywhere and the quality of battery will still cost you. If you buy this you are using it on the go. You can't compare a stationary system to a mobile system so no you can't build this type of setup for cheap

I would build it like a car jump charger with wheels and a collapsible handle If you can't move that around your pretty weak plus i have access to batteries at cost i can buy top of the line interstate golf cart batteries for $75 bucks or normal DS batteries for $45 each so ya i can make it stronger last longer for cheaper at the slight cost of ease of mobility. But i know my shit won't fail and i can replace batteries years down the road this one I'm pretty sure you have to toss and buy new all over again.

Im not sure if he worries about bear, but you cannot stop a bear from smelling something, bear can smell anything and everything ! a bear's sense of smell is about 100x stronger than a dog, and about 2,000-3,000 stronger than people.

At this point there are better options for similar prices. The Bluetti and Ecoflow smaller units have LiFe04 batteries and are $209 on sale, $240-ish when not. If I was going to spend $400 + I'd be looking at the Dr. Prepare PowerMax. Basically a 100Ah 12V LiFePO4 battery that comes with a module that turns it into a basic power station.

You need Amp hours, not volts, probably a wifi connection, and you should be more worried about your fridge, your furnace, and things other than gaming. TV's are power-pigs.
