Hi Guys,
I make some budget backpacking gear upgrades to my outdoor gear collection. I show you what hiking gear I upgrade to and also show some budget options that would be more affordable for you. You deserve to be comfortable and safe while hiking in the backcountry and I show you what backpacking gear that get's the job done right!!! I try the Klymit Static V sleep pad and get a great price on a new one! I add the Sea to Summit X Bowl and the X Mug to my collection! I look at a very absorbent Microfiber towel called the Rainleaf! I try out the Explorer Duel Arc Electronic Lighter for backcountry fire making! I also check out the portable, packable Osprey Ultra Light Stuff Pack for hiking and travel!
Thanks for watching!

I made my own camping towels using a microfiber dish towel from the dollar store that I cut in half. I put a ribbon and snap on each piece so they can hang on my pack to dry. If you don't care about the hanging loop, you don't have to diy anything, and it's a great, ultra cheap option.

Eddie Bauers stowaway packs are similar and you can get them on clearance for $15 a lot of the time. 20l & 30l sizes- (I think the larger size is maybe 13 oz. (?) They weigh more than the Osprey, but my kids use them for everything from school bags, to daypacking trips to my daughter uses one for her 'go bag' for hammock camping. She keeps her hammock, quilt, pad, straps, tarp, stakes, etc. w/room to spare in the smaller version.

Ive been using the sea to summit microfiber towel. Its the mid sized version but its perfect for me and has a botton hanger loop on it and came with a rigid stuff sack. I also bought a small pack towel from EMS that i use mainly for sweat or wiping gear down. I did find a pretty nice affordable camp pillow too by decathlon called the helium pillow. Weighs only 6oz and has an air bladder with a foam topper and a washable pillow cover and its pretty good sized too. Costs only $14.99 on decathlons website. I alternate between that and my drool pillow by eastern mountain sports. I was actually thinking about mixing the two pillows together DIY style frankenpillow lol..People have done it. The Klymit pad looks like a great deal!! Just wondering- do you know anything about the Sable sleeping pad? I was looking at buying one (right now they are on sale for just over $30 on Amazon and are rated at an R value of 5. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is a good product! There were a lot of good reviews, but not many people (backpackers in particular) had reviewed it. Thanks, and love these videos! Very helpful for a beginner like me!

I'm literally typing this as the following event happened not but 2 minutes ago. Story time... I'm revising my gear for a small backpacking trip. I'm trying to cut weight without making consolations (aren't we all). And as he started whipping the Osprey around, I got a whiff of skunk (I'm on my porch having a drink at 1:00am). I keep watching for another thirty seconds. Long story short, the little guy comes up to me, and I gently reach to hit pause due to the audio. Didn't work. I'm skunked as I'm typing this. Anyway, I'll watch this after I wash everything I have on me.

Its the Base Camp Review Show!!!! Now you have every Osprey pack!!! The sides of the Static V fold around you a little bit when you lay on it. And if you put it in a hammock the sides fold up the sides of the hammock. I bought the Insulated Static V for one pad year round it was the best bang for the buck only costing $10 more than the non insulated at the time. Them camp towels are under estimated! you can clean the moisture/condensation off your tent wall before you pack it up. In the summer you can buy the Cooling Shammies that work good also and keep you cool while your in the sun!!

I like the size of the tiny Osprey daypack, but i dont think it is very comfortable to wear. The Arcteryx "Index 15" backpack is only 15 liter, and about twice as expensive - but is also much more comfortable IMO, has more pockets for organization, and is made from very durable material that at least *seems* waterproof (i have not tested this). The Arcteryx packs down to maybe slightly bigger size than as the one shown @14:20, so not anywhere near as small as the Osprey, but still plenty small enough to bring in the backpack/panniers if you should want an extra daypack for your trip. I got both, and have never actually used the Osprey outside trying it on to see how it feels. I do however use the Arcteryx regularly on dayhikes where i want to carry more food or gear than i can fit in my 3 liter "evoc cc" backpack. This last backpack is actually *really nice* as it is very comfortable, and the perfect size for 2 liters of water (it even comes with a 2 liter waterbladder), a few PB&J sandwiches, waterfilter, Arcteryx "Incendo sl" (thin jacket that packs about the same size as that Osprey daypack), GPS, maps, compass, flashlight, bandaids, and rubbing alcohol. Pretty decent for such a small backpack :P

When you are giving “comparable alternatives” to some very popular high quality products... what level of use/ testing are you using to determine the alternative as comparable?
@basecampchris

Hi Noel, if it is off of Amazon it is just looking at a cheaper comparable alternative...no testing other than buyer reviews. ( ...sometimes I'll order it and try it out )
@noellasure4063
@noellasure4063 4 года назад
”a cheaper comparable alternative” that you yourself aren't comparing in any way... The word ”comparable” insinuates that they actually do have similar performance criteria. I don't think it is fair to have products ”compared” as similar just because they are possibly described similarly. Especially when we are discussing equipment that people are potentially going to take into the backcountry and use. I have now watched several of your videos and found the ones where you are using the gear to be informative, while these tabletop ”comparisons” are VERY misleading.

One of the things I get the biggest kick out when discussing sleep pads is the sheer number of people whose main gripe is that they need to use more than 10 breaths to fill one. Seriously. I know we've got Covid-19 all over the place, but is taking 15-20 strong breaths really a deal-breaker? And don't get me started on the "But ... it sounds like a bag of potato chips!" people. :)

@@basecampchris All of my pads are "rescues" from REI garage sales. Basically a quartet of $100-$130 inflatables that I bought for $9-$20 each and fixed with a $5 repair kit. I'm fortunate to live where we have an REI, though. If it looks to be in great shape but the tag reads something generic like, "doesn't hold air" or "can't find leak" it's worth a shot. If it looks like it went through a bear's digestive tract, it's probably more than a pinhole somwewhere. And REI DOES put some beat-to-hell stuff out there at the garage sales.

Word of warning on the Klymit V: the r-value (aka the insulation it provides) is 1.3, which is next to nothing. It works for hot summer nights, but anything below 55 degrees and it'll make you cold. I had that happen to me when I was sleeping in a 20 degree bag and the overnight temp dropped to 48.

Most products made in USA proudly proclaim this, for example Kifaru: "Made in America, bred in the back country, and galvanized in combat, you won’t find tougher, better built outdoor gear." Stone Glacier: "All Stone Glacier packs and accessories are proudly made in the USA."

@@RetrieverTrainingAlone Your right my Klymit pad says designed in Utah USA Made in Taiwan. Way to smash all my hopes and dreams Missy!!! Hahaha!! Seriously though a quality product with a lifetime warranty that everyone can afford is better than worrying about where something was made. Careless underpaid employees are in every country.. Every company has one thing in mind.. and that's to take your money....

That's great you get Made in USA gear! I get the best gear at the best price wherever I can find it! Bonus if it's manufactured in the USA! ...Thanks for watching. "Keep Hiking!"

@@truthbetold916 An alternative is Thermorest pads...Made in USA (Seattle). I live in Alaska so I like their highest R-value pad for really cold camping.

That Klymit pad is not insulated. For about $15 more buy the Static V insulated. Still much cheaper than the Nemo but more comparable.

Hi Robert, Cool, good to know....Klymit has quite a line up of sleep pads! I may review more.

Be careful of the elcheapo collapsible cups/mugs/bowls, the sea to summit have a rigid ring around the top all of the elcheapo's I've seen do not and they are just junk. Pay he extra dollars and buy once buy right.

Hi K Williamson , I just put out a cheaper option for those that need to save...but yes the quality can vary when you go too cheap...I usually stick with the S2S and am happy.

I have the Nemo tensor and the klymit v. If you want to feel the ground all night long go with the klymit v. The Nemo for me is waaaay more comfortable. In this case you get what you pay for.

The NEMO is the superior pad but For the price ( $55 ) and how light it is ( 18.7 Ounces; Packed Size: 3 x 8 Inches ) the Klymit V works great in my opinion...very affordable...hence the video title "Budget" Backpacking.

Maby I’m to big for it then. I feel the ground with every little move I make. Good info in the video though. Thanks!

After owning 4 different Klymit sleeping pads... I will NEVER own one again. Thermarest is the best you'll get...

I get it...Klymit is budget friendly....that's a big reason it's in the vid. My go to is the Nemo Tensor/ extra wide. But that retails for $174 on their site..most people starting out can't do that.

I nearly fell off my chair when you said 35 dollars for the osprey pocket pack, decathlon sell these for a tenth of the price 🤦‍♂️
@basecampchris

Yep...it is the more expensive one...but the lightest and smallest...that's why I had the $15 version as backup....don't fall off your chair. I 'll check out the Decathlon...Thanks.

Klymit Static V does not have an R value anywhere near the Nemo Tensor. Not comparable at all.

At $38.95 versus $154.95 the word here "Budget " applies...hence the name of the video....also slept on it 3 nights ago in a volcanic crater in the desert...I woke up to a snow storm...was very comfortable with it....worked for me.

If you want to save money on those products, simply don’t buy them. Other than the sleeping pad, you can supplement all of those items with things you already own... for free...
